The 1963 movie ‘The Leopard’ (il Gattopardo) by Visconti is (still) a great movie to watch about Sicilian history. I saw the restored 185 minute cut recently in Baltimore & then Los Angeles on the big screen, and it was amazing.
💡📖Where does the name "Mafia" come from? Well, it’s a bit of a mystery. No one can definitively pinpoint exactly when it came to be, but there are a few theories floating around. The term 'mafia' wasn't part of the vocabulary used to describe this secretive group, not even by its own members. Instead, they were likely referred to as 'honoured society' or simply 'men of honour.' These more respectful titles are noted in historical accounts like those of Colonna, who often opted for terms like 'the sect.' It wasn't until the 1860s that the word 'mafia' began to make its way into public discourse. One theory suggests it traces back to the Arabic word "ma'afir," named after an Arab tribe that settled in Sicily in the 9th century, or maybe from "mahyas," meaning "aggressive boasting" or "swagger." Another idea is that it comes from the Sicilian word "mafiusu," which in the 19th century described someone bold, swaggering, and fearless, eventually evolving to mean someone involved in criminal activities. Then there's the French angle, suggesting it comes from "mafia," a term used to describe a secret society or a band of criminals. Lastly, there's the folk etymology route, with some saying it stems from the phrase "Morte alla Francia Italia anela" (M.A.F.I.A.), meaning "Death to France is Italy's cry," supposedly used by Sicilian patriots during the French invasion. The opera, ‘The Mafiosi of Vicaria prison’, first performed in 1863 and written in the Sicilian dialect, did a great deal to add momentum to the name’s adoption. Despite only being described in the title, the play became hugely popular at the time making the idea of honour one of its central themes. It describes the honour codes of a prison gang, their initiation rituals and collection of ‘Pizzu’, or protection money. All practices uncannily similar to those of the mafia of more recent times, adding credence to the idea the play was describing and stylizing a group long present in Sicilian society. The name’s adoption then gathered pace as it entered the Italian political system and started making its way into debates and, consequently, the lips of the politically connected in cities throughout Italy
Despite this movie being described as a mafia movie, it will remain the greatest movie to the point that I have all three copies of the movies and it is necessary to watch them every week. My greetings to the entire crew from 1972 to 1990.
This is Episode ONE of Our 3 Part Series on the Sicilian Mafia 🗡🌹 🍿 WATCH EPISODE 2: ruclips.net/video/8QNPheNTLKM/видео.htmlsi=j2Z_EoaIHbPhHqMz 🍿 WATCH EPISODE 3: Coming Soon... 🤫
Mafia : " You gotta pay for protection " Target : " Protection from who " ? Mafia : " From us but that's the part we never say out loud... omerta & all.... " Target : " I thought you were Men of Honor " ? Mafia : " Isn't it an honor for you to pay us " ?
I had understood the term "Mafia", derives from French occupation days, but was meant by the literal translation... my daughter... This was a man's cry after French Soldiers abducted and killed his daughter. The mourning father's cries inspires Native Sicilians, who already being clannish and insular towards centuries of foreign oppression, to take it to the next level necessary to their survival. Ma Fia, just means My Daughter
Question for YOU... And Be Honest... If You were a "Mob Boss" How long would You survive?? Would you be a don Vito or are you closer to Michael or even Sonny? But what I'm even more curious about is seeing which of you are actually Fredo’s! Let's find out ⬇ bit.ly/MafiaDonQuiz
I would live in the shadows, being in the spotlight is incredibly challenging and dangerous, I would prefer Don Vito, and try to succesfully go on legal bussines, altough it would be very difficult; most of these people transition succesfully by naming heirs from out of their family to do the dirty job, thus their own sons and daughters grow weak and entitled but not in great danger.
My mother would definitely be a female Don Vito. I would be definitely be a female Michael. My 2nd oldest brother Alex would be a male Connie. My oldest brother would be Sonny.
Can you make a video about how, when and where Michael Corleone was made?? I read somewhere that according to lore he was made in Sicily before he returned to NY.
Actually the Mafia was created in Sicily in 1850 and the Italian Immigrants spread it into the US through Ellis Island in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries.
Bernardo Provenzano reminded me of the Greek from The Wire. Hidden, no ego involved, business, always business. The Accountant was also a great sniper in his physical prime.
@@booleaninfernusstudios5352 Believe it or not, I know he had the nickname The Accountant. I wonder what he was like on a second to second, minute to minute basis. Mannerisms, what his personality was like, was he upbeat if safe to be so, or was he gloomy and dark, etc.
I’m glad to see that it was revealed in that scene 🎬 which was so powerful and truthful that he made it his last request knowing that he’s about to Be killed
Please tell me your going to include the NORMAN'S in this...these transplanted Vikings kicked the Arabs out at about the same time William the Bastard invaded and Conquered England 🏴 in 1066. With 7000 men😅 and 7000 horses 🐎 😅😅.include Robert Guisgard... and Brother Roger.
The rumor about this 19th century author to b a mafioso or even don himself servesems bs. I mean some of the guys, who got initiated during rinha's reign gave statements 5hateven among themself, "cosa nostra" or the organisation was prohibitted to be mentioned. That was not in general, but within some of the familes that were often members over 3 or more gemerations, who were a lil' more strict internally, that was how seriously the omerta was followed. In the usa the existrnce of the mafia, officially was concidered a rumor n non existent till well into the 1960s. These mafiosi as well were directly branched of or organised along the cosa nostrs's traditions n rules originally, at least in regards to the omerta n denial of the mafia's existence that also wasn't changed . So how likely would it b, that an author in sicily, as a famous guy among all these mobsters who take omerta deadly serious, would go public n write about this secret society, even the omerta n that under his own name? That far back, in that location this guy wouldn't have gotten much to live as soon this book got around. He would prolly just've disappeared or made an example of. They had a ridiculous list of things that are forbidden n punishable by death. Stuff that is really smallfries, so the chances to get away for breaking the number one rule there is (not just in this, but italy's othrr 2 mafias too) was non existent. It's imaginable that such a rumor could come to be out of the thought, he must have a certain level of power n protection to possibly survive it, among ppl who live within these areas n know that exept for the mob, no one has the influence to be that safe, not even politicians or police n judges. They very likely are corrupt businesspartners but no one is untouchable exept the mob. So despite how lil' sense it makes that a member would reveal them like that, to someone who lives with but outside the mob there, this weirdly is kinda the most probable possibility. I would guess that this guy either didn't took it srriously or hasn't spent much time on sicily to feel secure.

Despite this movie being described as a mafia movie, it will remain the greatest movie to the point that I have all three copies of the movies and it is necessary to watch them every week. My greetings to the entire crew from 1972 to 1990.
This is Episode ONE of Our 3 Part Series on the Sicilian Mafia 🗡🌹

Pretty cool video if you don’t mind the excessive number of ads
I had understood the term "Mafia", derives from French occupation days, but was meant by the literal translation... my daughter... This was a man's cry after French Soldiers abducted and killed his daughter. The mourning father's cries inspires Native Sicilians, who already being clannish and insular towards centuries of foreign oppression, to take it to the next level necessary to their survival.
Ma Fia, just means My Daughter
Can you do a video on Al Neri?

“Dark” history? I didn’t know the mafia was supposed to be wholesome! 😄

Thats funny...my Sicilian family would always tell me "there is no such thing as mafia "😂
Question for YOU...
And Be Honest...
If You were a "Mob Boss" How long would You survive??
Would you be a don Vito or are you closer to Michael or even Sonny?
But what I'm even more curious about is seeing which of you are actually Fredo’s!
Let's find out ⬇
bit.ly/MafiaDonQuiz
don vito
Innacurate
Any light history ??? Am asking for friend
Why no mention of Vincenzo Rimi and Bernardo Provenzano?
Bernardo Provenzano reminded me of the Greek from The Wire. Hidden, no ego involved, business, always business. The Accountant was also a great sniper in his physical prime.
@@booleaninfernusstudios5352 Believe it or not, I know he had the nickname The Accountant. I wonder what he was like on a second to second, minute to minute basis. Mannerisms, what his personality was like, was he upbeat if safe to be so, or was he gloomy and dark, etc.

I just think of "True Romance" with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper while watching this. Tell me, Am I lying?

I’m glad to see that it was revealed in that scene 🎬 which was so powerful and truthful that he made it his last request knowing that he’s about to Be killed

Ah, that's hot!
Whats the song at 2:36 ?
Family in America was destroyed
I believe even more so
