I've actually been to Hakone, Japan and visited a woodshop that made these kind of puzzles, beside other wooden things. An old man who has been doing this for ages showed us a bit. They do everything by hand, the traditional way. He also showed us different puzzles and the mechanics were mindblowing. It was really an experience to see someone so passionate about it doing this.
Btw these different colored patterns are all natural, it isn't dyed! It's called Yosegi Zaiku, they just glue different woods together to get these nice patterns :)
Def worth a visit if you're ever in the area!!

Loved this puzzle! And yes, I also thought it were 3 pieces lol 😁 Japanese people or should I say the hole Japanese Culture has something mystic which I love and respect.. It is like the many different Cultures the Country has has a haze drifting over it.. indeed like you said, even puzzles from them have that whimsical, characteristic, mystical sphere..
But bluntly said, I like the sequence kinds, just to train the brain the steps you make forwards to remember them backwards too. And on a bad day you can fail miserably lol! At least it keeps me off the streets 😜😁
