I'm rebuilding an old mower deck with new mandrels, spindles, pulleys and belts. It's really wore out like most mower decks get over time and I don't think any of the bolts except the bolts that fasten the blades to the spindles have ever been removed. I knew about heating nuts or bolts to loosen the really tight stuff but your tip on the using map gas is a keeper! Good job...good video.. I could hear you really well.. you explained things really clearly and you had good camera angles we could see exactly what you were doing and those are what make the best diy 'How To' videos. Thanx, 👍 p.s I subscribed. ✅
Awesome video! Thought about what you said about propane. So did it less time. Loosened right up after 20 seconds with a small propane torch. Thank you!
If I have a Ferris mower with bolts instead of nuts, holding the blades, will heating it work the same? I’m thinking if it seized, it will; however, if it’s strictly to expand the nut, so it is looser, wouldn’t that have the opposite effect if I’m heating the bolt?
@@IndRepair Thank you. I heated with Mapp for about 50 seconds each and then I had to hit it with my Dewalt DW292 impact for about 15-20 seconds, but they finally came off.
Yep. Im about to be 60 and had to replace a heart valve so my strength is not near what I once had. This worked great for me. After heating I gave it a couple knocks with a hammer.
I am having issues getting the top nut off my middle spindle of an exmark. The nut holding the blade just spins. When I put a wrench on the bottom nut and use a cordless socket wrench on the top it just loosens the bottom nut. Any suggestions?
You should be able to hold onto the top pulley and use an impact to get it off. Sometimes you can get a pipe wrench under the pulley to grip part of the spacer on the shaft if you need something to hold it
Yeah sometimes a bigger impact works but in many cases even with the larger one (we have a Dewalt with 1,200 ft-lbs breakaway torque we use often with difficult nuts) you will have to use heat to break free the rusting together the two have done
Very true! I have many times have older people ask for help getting blades sharpened because of this issue. I used to go help right there but don't have the capacity to run out all the time anymore so I have the driver bring them back so I can get them taken care of

(SOMETIMES) if you try to TIGHTEN the nut and then turn it counter clockwise that works.
This is a great tip! It works well and is something I did not mention! Thanks for watching!

Awesome! Glad to hear!! Thanks for watching!
This worked great! Used a propane torch for 2-3 minutes a bolt, all 3 came off with impact wrench. Then ran blades afterwards. TY!
Glad to hear. Thanks for watching!

Awesome! Great job!
Thank you so much for the video. Just saved me a trip to the shop!!
Thanks for watching! Glad to help!
The flame wrench works a lot. Great tips on map vs propane.
I was sitting here thinking what is he talking about flame wrench haha!!
@@IndRepair normally an oxygen acetalene. I’ve used heat on different things. I had a duhh moment when you heated the nuts. Take care
Great advice thanks for making this
Thanks for watching!!
Worked like charm. Thanks for ya video
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Thanks dude for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks! that was my next step, I was just worried about the shaft!
Shaft will be good. Thanks for watching!
@@IndRepair Came right off, after I heated it up with map gas, Thanks again for your help! God Bless.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!

Many times the temperature difference between the two will free them but not nearly as effective, no

Will heat work with a bolt on my mower it's not a nut?
Yes, many times heat will break the bond and let it free
@@IndRepair TY 👍👍
Does the Bernzomatic head that came with the propane tank fit the MAP gas tank?
I am not positive about this but I believe they have two different size orifices to control gas flow
THANK YOU, I'm getting older and yeah, just don't have as much brutal strength has I had in my younger years.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Have you used a leaping jaw clow hammer.
Lol never heard of anything like that
Map gas or cutting torch is what I use but because it’s iron nut don’t over heat it
Just a tad of heat is all
Very true, they sure will deteriorate quick with an oxygen acetylene torch. I don't use mine much anymore because the map gas works so well

Butane worked for me and I did not have to heat it as much. My traveling lawn mower mechanic over-tightened it last Fall.
Great job! Thanks for watching!
Hey 750LB Torque Wrench from Kobalt works Too > That Battery not enough juice .

What type of gas?
Ethanol free fuel...MAP gas for heating
that was my next step
Awesome!! Thanks for watching!
More funner to use brought force 😊.
Bringing force is always good unless you are hurt or cannot physically do this
I use a 46 foot breaker bar.
Haha mine broke last week
Other thing is older folks can trade some thing for some help if all else fails

A little anti-seize on those bolts and never stick again...
Yes sir!
For reference, you actually heated the nut a full 1:30.
Pretty close to it, yes.
Thanks for watching!
Goodbye bearing seals 😅
Not even close
And if that doesn't work
Heat, bigger impact or a larger breaker bar/pipe on ratchet or whatever to get more removing power. Block of wood to stop the blade from turning
Probably not going to work if you have a bolt instead of a nut.
Not nearly as effective on a bolt for sure. Thanks for watching!
dynamite
That would work if you use enough! Thanks for watching!

Many times the temperature difference between the two massively expanding/contracting will loosen it up
