Gary had (and still has) millions of fans all over the world, so definately cannot be considered underrated. However, I guess he didn't get into pop culture so deep as e.g. Carlos Santana (who may be even more recognised by everybody if you go out doing poll on the street). Gary was a real loner, a real outsider but still - he composed magnificent music that cannot be neighter mistaken nor forgotten.
