Thank you for this informative tutorial! My husband bought me a gardenia bush and a gardenia tree for mother's day this year. You are so confident with how you handle yours and I am so anxious! 🙂 I have both inside in a sunny location and hope I don't end up killing them!
This was a great video, lots of information to help me grow my Gardenia in Texas. I bought two from Lowe and they are now 9 months old and made it through the texas crazy winter ups and downs season. I left mine outside my back patio and almost forgot about them but they are thriving.
Wow great. In Texas you don't have to worry too much prune the center branches if it gets too cluttered you want air to freely move around the plant and water and fertilize
Blessings to you, very informative, best Gardena video on the net,Thank you for your time and knowledge. I had no idea they weren't to be babied so much, I will always treat it kindly but be more hands on with her.
Believe me when I say I rarely give comment but this time I will-- Because you don't have any idea how helpful, practical, and straight forward this tutorial video is to me and my wife. We just planted Gardenia, Cananga odorata, Magnolia x alba, Murraya paniculata. Yet, we lack the knowledge to make them grow bigger and healthier. Thus, we searched a lot of videos but mostly are theoretical without any actual practice, but yours are what we've been looking for these past few weeks! Please do make more tutorial videos on how to maintain any other plants (Preferably those fragrant plants). Warm hugs from Indonesia.

Greatest video on gardenias. Just blindly purchased the smaller versions (3 Jubilation and 3 Scent-Amazing) from Home Depot. Reza, I took my tree in last week as the weather is getting cold at night in Toronto. The tree has grown a lot and lots of buds for the past month. Every branch I want to prune has a flower bud. Do I wait until the flower is spent, then prune? So far so good, nothing is dropping and I water on Wed & Sun.

I have four gardenias. I purchased them from Home Depot years ago. I love them in my zone 7a garden. They do well outdoors over the winter except this past winter. We received 10 inches of snow therefore I had to cut back the plant. But it always grows back well. Great information! New friend.
Sparks Dish soap and water and soak them good take emm outside if you can then and Spary with insecticides IT'S AN oily liquid you mix with water and spary Hope is not too late
Thank you for the video. How can I revive my gardenia? I am in zone 8--Georgia. I'm so tired of buying them and then they just died out on me. I have been purchasing from Home Depot
Gardenias need care , in form of watering in timely intervals , and feeding with regular fertilizer , I use miracle grow . There are different variety of Gardenias . the ones I have seen for sale at Home Depot are short and have lots of flower on them . If you have not done so , when you buy a Gardenias from a store , I suggest repotting it in a bigger pot , with good potting soil , prune the branches so AIR can get in and around the plant , you don't want the plants branches and leaves too bunched up Watch my other video regarding the pruning and Spraying . Prune the center branches so you can see through the plant . Water once every 4 days half gallon per 10 gallon pot. make sure your pot has a drain hole at the bottom .
Based on Google Zone 7A is coastal from Georgia to Long Island NY If it is a young plant you should water during the summer twice a week keep checking the leaves if they wilted water a bit more I guess being close to ocean you are in sandy soil which is good. Once a every 3 to 4 weeks give it some plant food miracle grow. Good luck thanx for watching
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. If the leaves drop and the branch seems to be drying out, do we trim it back? If so, do we trim it all the way back to the main stalk?
No Generaly the dried up socket after the flower is wilted will fall off if you pick them off I dont see any issues for the tree since the flower is dead as a general rule anything that is not Green on the plant I would remove
Hi I just purchased my gardenia, I live in Yonkers and the buds are falling off. After the buds fall am I supposed to leave it alone or cut where they fell off? I think what's happening is that the temperature is fluctuating a lot, one day it's in the 70s and today is in the 40s.
Thank you for this great video. I was nervous about caring for my newly acquired gardenia plant. Your plants are beautiful. I will definitely try to grow mine as beautiful as yours. I live in Miami so I know that I have the tropical weather for it 😃
Well my friend, if your Gardenia shows yellow leaves, jagged edges or black holes, than the cause of this issue generally is a lack of nutrients. Make sure you're using a quality slow release chemical fertilzer, like Osmocote 14/14/14, that comes with all micros. Once they are well feeded, gardênias rarely develop yellow leaves.
Gardenias actually develop yellow leaves not long before they flower. Also the PH is super important, because if it's not at the right acidity , it can't absorb the nutrients. I am having to use one with chelated minerals in it now because the place I got it from did not maintain the acidity in the potting soil. I hope this helps it, because it doesn't seem to be working at the moment, (it might have root rot too!) and I can't get the soil to stay at the right PH, even using aluminum sulfate - it corrected it, but a week later the PH was back to 7!
My first guess is Too.much Water , 2nd Fertilizer Arevyoubgettingvlotsbofvrain ? Are you or have you fertilized this summer I fertilize outdoor plants at least twice in spring and summer 2 to 3 months apart also depends on your type of soil Many factors Bugs can cause havoc as well
Yes, bring them in the house . The Gardenias DO NOT stand any sort of FROST. just regular light from a window will do , water as needed , plant will flower and stay green during the winter indoor condition
Mines buds are turning brown. It looks bad. I dont know what to do to fix them. I just bought them a month ago. They are not potted. They are in ground. I am in zone 9.
@@audreymai2773 you can buy Potting soil from garden center near you , or just make sure the soil is not clay type and or too compacted Loose soil Dont over water once every 3 days is enough in summer
1 make sure the plant gets enough water 2 make sure the plant is pruned properly to many leaves an branches bunched up does not allow for air flow and nutrients to get to the buds 3 fertilize with miracle grow once per month 4 remove all yellow leaves or damaged leaves Good luck
Hi I just purchased my first Gardenia. I’m in zone 8a. I noticed you have your plants in sun do they get shade in the afternoon? How much sun do you recommend for them? Thank you for your tips your plant is beautiful 😍
Sun and shade, make sure it gets water, if the leaves begin to wilt then its time for water better not let them get to that point water every other day till you get the rhythm Thanx for watching
Not sure what you mean by Zone 9 and a half ? Zone 9 is the southern part of United States Such as Florida all the way to Southern California Very good climate to grow Gardenias all year round outdoor
@@rezasaba1602 Yes Gardenia is my favorite go to also Hibiscus. And after watching I figured that yes Florida (being zone 9 n half) mid way is ideal. Thank you for your tips and instruction.
Hi, I have three gardenias but the flower before opening fall. At the end of it is black, at first I thought is a king of fungus so buy Garden Phos but after time the same issue continues. Will you know why? Thank you in advance! Note: I prune my plants at the beginning of spring.
I have experienced the same, make sure the plants are getting water every 4 to 5 days, if you see leaves or buds wilting (hanging down) it could be a lack of water, give them plant food, Miracle Grow once every couple of months. also, poke the soil around the plant to make sure air and water, and food can get down into the soil (aerating)
I use Miracle grow tivos available in United States They add Iron due to yellow leaves I belive When I get Yellow leaves I just remove them Fertilize once every month dont do too much
Hi I just purchased my first Gardenia I’m in zone 8a I noticed that you have your plants out in the sun so they stay in the sun all day or do they get shade. How many hours of sun do you recommend for them?
Yes it needs attention Specially when u have to bring them inside for winter they are very heavy However the scent of the flowers make up for the pain lol
Pay attention to watering dont let plant dry out the soil should be moist , some sites advise lack of Iron causes the yellowing of leaves . On hot summer days water everyday and make sure the soil drains well
Add 1 tablespoon of WHITE vinegar to 1 gallon of water. That should do the trick! For years I would buy a gardenia and have the same thing happen. The water just needs to be a bit more acidic. I learned this on google. My gardenia tree has been doing great. Very few yellow leaves and like this guy says I just pull them off.
I’m afraid it’s the size of your plant Reza! If roots are uneasy you’ll begin to see awkward things such as deformation or constant yellowing. It also prefers partal shade no direct sunlight. As for the powdery substance I think you referred to mildew. It happens if your plant is exposed to constant wet days or you probably wash it sometimes! Allowing air flow in like you mentioned is number one fix for it not happening again but again.. the main reason it happens is too much humidity for mildew is a fungal plant disease. You can throw a plastic bag if branches can not be helped so they wouldn’t catch raindrops (flowers by the way should never be touched by water at all it will cause them to brown easily and turn ugly) then as soon as rain stops uncover and allow air to dry it. Pruning to allow air flow in is a good idea! I’m actually amazed how you still had it going all those years with all the picking and cutting you seem to enjoy practising on the sweet Gardenia! It’s so forgiving.😄 It realises you mean well! It is dificult for Gardenia to survive a wet environment but not impossible so .. Bravooo!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@hana.the.writer5074firstly Thanx for the info . Crowding of roots could be an issue I will pay attention to it . My plants are even bigger now a year later Yellowing of leaves is just a way for us to take care of the plant I guess. lol The white powder stuff is definitely some sort of plant parasite which I have taken care of it with both Soap and water mist and Insecticide. This plant Loves direct sun light. It lives on Sun and Water lol This plant keeps ya on your toes . I recently infused honey with the flower petals of my plant and itvis delicious
I've noticed that gardenias are super sensitive to changing position, repotting etc. Maybe it's best to get one in winter when its dormant and then when you find the right spot for it, try to make it its permanent spot rather than moving the plant around. Goodluck.
Make sure when you water you dont water the blood and or flower I notice it makes them wilt and brown also rain water foes the same Also fertilise every 3 weeks or so with Miracle Grow

you welcome sir
Excellent video. Thank you.
I have four gardenias. I purchased them from Home Depot years ago. I love them in my zone 7a garden.
They do well outdoors over the winter except this past winter. We received 10 inches of snow therefore I had to cut back the plant. But it always grows back well.
Great information!
New friend.
Lucky you Gardenias came back out here they Freeze am not so lucky
What variety do have?
The buds on my gardenia do not bloom. They turn yellow/brown and fall off. How can I get my gardenia to bloom?
Thanks for sharing this video ❤️🙏
Thank you for this!
Thanks for the advice I read somewhere that the flowers and leaves are edible
Thanks a lot for your information I live in Canada I love this plant so many times I tried but didn’t work for me
Can you show how you prune a detailed video? You are funny great tips!
I will iam eding the pruning video as we speak
This was REALLY helpful! Thank you!
My Gardenia has spider mites. How do I get rid of them b4 they kill my tree?
Sparks Dish soap and water and soak them good take emm outside if you can then and Spary with insecticides IT'S AN oily liquid you mix with water and spary
Hope is not too late
Yours are BEAURIFUL!!!
Great video, thank you!!
Great Job!!
Yellow leaves are just the Gardenia sacrificing leaves for blooms, prob just slightly deficient in nutrients. On a whole it looks amazing.
@@rezasaba1602 Thank you. i will fight to bring Mrs. G back to life, LOL
Why do you have a light bulb inside the bush?
Just for looks it lights up at night when I have the plant outside in summer
How often to water plants if they're in the ground? I'm in zone 7A.
Based on Google Zone 7A is coastal from Georgia to Long Island NY
If it is a young plant you should water during the summer twice a week keep checking the leaves if they wilted water a bit more I guess being close to ocean you are in sandy soil which is good. Once a every 3 to 4 weeks give it some plant food miracle grow. Good luck thanx for watching
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. If the leaves drop and the branch seems to be drying out, do we trim it back? If so, do we trim it all the way back to the main stalk?
I cut any branch that looks dead to the main branch, make sure you fertilize with miracle grow once a month too
Reza, do you prune off the flower sockets after the flower is done?
No Generaly the dried up socket after the flower is wilted will fall off if you pick them off I dont see any issues for the tree since the flower is dead as a general rule anything that is not Green on the plant I would remove
Hi I just purchased my gardenia, I live in Yonkers and the buds are falling off. After the buds fall am I supposed to leave it alone or cut where they fell off? I think what's happening is that the temperature is fluctuating a lot, one day it's in the 70s and today is in the 40s.
Keep it inside and gradually take out make sure the soil is moist not wet also Give it good soaking of Miracle Grow
Sun and shade area is ok for it
Thank you for this great video. I was nervous about caring for my newly acquired gardenia plant. Your plants are beautiful. I will definitely try to grow mine as beautiful as yours. I live in Miami so I know that I have the tropical weather for it 😃
you welcome
Good video!
That web under the leaves...spider mites. That's why the leaves are yellow. Leaves yellow from stress or disease, not just for kicks ;)
How do you get rid of spider mites?
What about how much sun/shade it needs?
In the summer I bring mine outside under full sun No issue make sure u water when its realy hot outside you dont want to see wilted leaves
Shade is fine as well
Well my friend, if your Gardenia shows yellow leaves, jagged edges or black holes, than the cause of this issue generally is a lack of nutrients.
I hope this helps it, because it doesn't
seem to be working at the moment, (it might have root rot too!) and I can't get the soil to stay at the right PH, even using aluminum sulfate - it corrected it, but a week later the PH was back to 7!
Great video! thanks
Why my gardenia flowers turns yellow please let me know
My first guess is Too.much Water , 2nd Fertilizer
Arevyoubgettingvlotsbofvrain ?
Are you or have you fertilized this summer
I fertilize outdoor plants at least twice in spring and summer 2 to 3 months apart also depends on your type of soil
Many factors Bugs can cause havoc as well
How long have you had this plant?
The two plants are over 10 years old each
So helpful ! Thanks
Do you take the plants inside in the winter time?! What kind of light do you get it?!
Yes, bring them in the house . The Gardenias DO NOT stand any sort of FROST. just regular light from a window will do , water as needed , plant will flower and stay green during the winter indoor condition
Very informative and helpful video! Thanks for sharing!
Mines buds are turning brown. It looks bad. I dont know what to do to fix them. I just bought them a month ago. They are not potted. They are in ground. I am in zone 9.
Audrey
Basic thing is make sure the soil drains well you dont want roots to rot soil needs to be moist not wet.
Give it good soaking of miracle grow
@@rezasaba1602 will do! But what can I do to make sure they drain well? Is there a soul you can suggest? Btw, thank you for your time.
@@audreymai2773 you can buy Potting soil from garden center near you , or just make sure the soil is not clay type and or too compacted
Loose soil
Dont over water once every 3 days is enough in summer
I have a Plamts Gardenia. To much buds to bloom but it will not continue pls.what to do i want to seethe flowers to bloom
1 make sure the plant gets enough water
2 make sure the plant is pruned properly to many leaves an branches bunched up does not allow for air flow and nutrients to get to the buds
3 fertilize with miracle grow once per month
4 remove all yellow leaves or damaged leaves
Good luck
Hi I just purchased my first Gardenia. I’m in zone 8a. I noticed you have your plants in sun do they get shade in the afternoon? How much sun do you recommend for them? Thank you for your tips your plant is beautiful 😍
Sun and shade, make sure it gets water, if the leaves begin to wilt then its time for water better not let them get to that point water every other day till you get the rhythm Thanx for watching
Please add more videos on gardenia plant
Please.. Add as quick as possible
Zone 9 and a half?
Not sure what you mean by Zone 9 and a half ?
Zone 9 is the southern part of United States Such as Florida all the way to Southern California
Very good climate to grow Gardenias all year round outdoor
What's that hanging on the branches of gardenia plant
Those are LED Solar lanterns just for looks at night the glow and looks realy nice
@@rezasaba1602 And please add more videos on gardenia plant.

@@rezasaba1602 i can't move my eyes off from your gardenia plants.
There look very stylish, elegant there.
@@babe852 thank you
Very nice
Why mine is yellowish? lack of fertiliser?
Some say lack of Iron
What I do ,I pull down on Yellow leaves and discard them water only once every 4 or 5 days and not too much
Your gardenia is awesome! Is that an Agapanthus in the pot with it?
Thanx the flower in the pot is Amarelious
Sometimes good morning they asked to put some iron fertilize tell me what kind of iron and thank you
I use Miracle grow tivos available in United States
They add Iron due to yellow leaves I belive
When I get Yellow leaves I just remove them
Fertilize once every month dont do too much
Do you water them on winter time? and you just put them in the garage ?
sorry for the late response just saw it , yes water in winter make sure in winter the plant does not freeze due to cold
What about spider mites
Hi I just purchased my first Gardenia I’m in zone 8a I noticed that you have your plants out in the sun so they stay in the sun all day or do they get shade. How many hours of sun do you recommend for them?
no more than 6 hours of full sun, then place your plant in a sunny place inside your house
Very nice plant 🪴 but too high maintence
Yes it needs attention Specially when u have to bring them inside for winter they are very heavy
However the scent of the flowers make up for the pain lol
Whenever I brings back home, it becomes yellow leaf then dead, why
My plants are even bigger now a year later
Yellowing of leaves is just a way for us to take care of the plant I guess. lol
The white powder stuff is definitely some sort of plant parasite which I have taken care of it with both Soap and water mist and Insecticide.
This plant Loves direct sun light. It lives on Sun and Water lol
This plant keeps ya on your toes .
Goodluck.
thank you for this video
Half the video is about pulling yellow leaves ?
Mine bloom then after few days dry up & brown
Make sure when you water you dont water the blood and or flower I notice it makes them wilt and brown also rain water foes the same
Also fertilise every 3 weeks or so with
Miracle Grow
