into magic the gathering for the right reasons: "I saw a magic card once, it was pretty, I started playing 3 weeks ago when you told me you'd pay me to be on the show"
+Ghostneedle1 Based on one match? Yes. If they played best of three things might look different, which is why I keep hoping they'll eventually go for that format =P
+Ghostneedle1 also sean again is playing against an opponent that doesn't really know what he is doing. yes the celestial flair was the right pick. no double chump blocking wasn't the right call. blocking to kill a creature would have been better. Not keeping up the flair was a mistake earlier. lots of little things that someone who has played for more than 3 weeks would have a better chance of following.
How do you guys find people to play....here lately it has been like....did y'all meet him on an elevator and just go "Hey Gavin Stenhouse do you play magic?"
In America you would think it normal for someone to say "It's time to go to church", instead of "It's time to go to the church". In England we do the same when talking about hospital visits.
I think we all need to remember that this show is meant to appeal to ALL levels of magic players....especially newer ones. Theres always Pro Tour coverage if you want to see that kind of match
I have a suggestion, that the less experienced players should be able to choose the decks they wanna play with, while Sean of course always spin the wheel, for the surprise aspect! Oh, and keep up the great work!
Seans reaction during the deck summoning then his subsequent *BANG* was hands down without a doubt the greatest moment ive seen in this entire show so far
IceMetalPunk You are WRONG. They use pre-made, buyable decks whenever a MTG-rookie is up. They use contructed (they call them "advanced") decks when the guest himself is a LONGTIME active player.
While I agree there were several misplays, I really enjoyed this episode! Gavin was really light-hearted and personable. I think he and Sean riffed off one another well. :D
This guest was very entertaining. Great episode! But I do wonder what's the logic behind having almost exclusively new and inexperienced players? Seems like there should be a balance. Many of the guests appear to have learned Magic just for the sake of appearing on the show; shouldn't the focus be on the game first and guest second? I'd love to see someone like Kyle Hill from Nerdist in an episode. He was great on the MtG show on G&S's twitch, super entertaining and encyclopedic knowledge of the game and cards.
I actually like blue. It's fun to draw cards, then draw cards for drawing cards. Drawing cards for placing mana and blocking spells. Drawing cards for putting all of your drawn cards in your graveyard. Super fun :)
That's the thing about Magic. Sometimes you get great strategic fights, and sometimes the game is over before it starts simply because of the card draw.
Not even British, but it makes total sense to say “going to hospital” - when you’re a kid, you don’t “go to THE school,” after all: you just go to school.
I felt like this guy was offered cash to come on, and said "Gimme dat money. This Magic shit? Let's cram in a random backstory and learn the rules over the next day or so."
Sheriff K True. While the mechanic may fit, the "sense" or "feel" doesn't sit right with me as Black. "This makes you go faster, and improves reaction time, and prevents you from falling to sleep." Just doesn't feel like a Black effect to me.
I know it's probably too much of a hassle to be workable on the show's budget but it would be nice if they'd record the intro, play out 2-3 games and then just pick the one with the most back and forth to showcase. These blowout games aren't quite as fun to watch (although the banter is the real reason to watch anyway, to be fair) but it's just part Magic that they will happen from time to time so it makes sense to plan the recording sessions in such a way as to account for potentially weak games.
I normally enjoy the interaction, if not the game itself. I agree with the sentiments that this episode was rather boring. If it wasn't for the inclusion of all the tangents, the video would have been far shorter.
No offense, but to me that rather sounds like negative nancy-ing. The episode was decent and ofc not every game of Magic ends up in a strategic spectactle, especially when introducing newcomers to the game. The edits, chemistry between guest and host and the funny moments are just some examples for positive things to point out.
@@NUSensei Replying to a comment in a passive-aggressive tone after 6 years, I imagine, is worse. Could've just not replied and moved on if a response to a 6-year-old comment was so trivial to you, but apparently not.
I am, of course, aware that mana colors have no inherent alignment, and it all depends on the individual planeswalkers that use them, but in an archetypal way you can't get any closer to LG vs. CE in MTG than with White/Blue vs. Red/Black, which I do enjoy thematically once in a while... Sadly, though, Haven (to mix yet another franchise into my analogy ;P) apparently sent out the third-born son of their third-born son, fresh out of paladin school, to lead an army in disarray...
I started playing Magic because of this show and honestly I have had very few complaints. I really do like this show, however this one was rough. When it takes literally four minutes for the hands to be revealed (4:01 to be exact), and over four and a half minutes for the first card to be played (4:43), I knew it was going to be a rough episode. When the episode is less than twenty minutes and nearly a quarter of that is doing introductions and deck reveals, it gets rather annoying. You can tell that it was a fast game in real time because nearly every move is then scrutinized and rebutdtaled with commentary. I kinda wish that this game was scrapped and another played (though I have no idea about time constraints and budgets, so for all I know it was rushed.) Regardless, keep up the great work! I loved the Chris Kluwe episode!
+Smeagol the Vile I thought you said you ended up yelling at your mother due to misplays. I was thinking "What does his mother have to do with this?" Hahaha
I think it's funny how when gaven plays his first plains, there is a comment that says "sure, it resolves" but playing a land is a special action that doesn't use the stack and therefore doesn't resolve, and it can't be responded to. playing lands just happens.
This wasn't really awful because of Gavin's newbishness. This just wasn't a fair fight. Black/Red is always going to run over a Blue/White weeny flying deck that seemingly doesn't have a single counterspell or lifelink. Him removing one creature wasn't going to change the outcome. I mean, I winced when Sean spun and landed on B/R because I knew it was over before I saw the cards.
Faerie miscreant's etb effect doesn't fizzle due to killing the creature , the effect does go on the stack however it does not require the creature to be alive .
+Dasnazzypenguin No, because Sean killed the first before the second faerie resolved. The ETB ability doesn't trigger until after it resolves, at which point the first is already dead and therefore Gavin doesn't control another.
+Dasnazzypenguin It would require the creature to be on the battlefield when the spell resolves which it wasn't due to being killed on the stack before the second faerie resolved.
UUUUUUGGGGHGHGHGHGH, Malakir Cullblade is exactly the kind of creature I'd be so pumped to get out on the battlefield...........aaaand then promptly go on tilt when the opponent pings it, exiles it or otherwise removes it... -____- /sigh
That was definitely the most memorable deck summoning I can recall seeing on Spellslingers, and I felt that it visually expressed Sean's general outlook on Blue decks and their origins. I had to laugh (it would have been even funnier and perhaps worse if Gaven actually had wound up with a blue-green deck).

he could've double blocked, not played the griffen played the flare killing 2 of his creatures played the Antelope for a blocker while getting another spell to slow the attack and played the griffen after to get the momentum back.
Honestly Gavin didn't really misplay anything. His deck was filled with terrible cards. The Aven Battle Priest, Faire's, and the Totem-Guide are all borderline unplayable. Sean's deck on the other hand had efficient creatures and removal.

i hate some of the newer rules if the card is counterspelled fine then its effect obviously doesnt come into play but if it hits the table and can be targeted then its own text needs to resolve as well.so sure kill it but the card draw should still resolve if not then the card wasnt there to kill in the first place
I watch it for the Plott.

...huh.
+GRhoen1 Youd prolly love playing the game too. Try it sometime ^_^
Me too!
Gavin did the best deck summoning in the entire spellslingers series so far
The whole moment was magical
Quite apt, that he summoned his BLUE deck from his nostril...
In America you would think it normal for someone to say "It's time to go to church", instead of "It's time to go to the church". In England we do the same when talking about hospital visits.
Gavin should have attacked before summoning that second fairy.

I'm seeing a trend here, every time someone gets a white/blue deck it's always a weaksauce, I guess whoever makes those decks really hates blue/white
+Nemitri Yeah, Wizards of the Coast are a bunch of wankers, selling all those impotent pre-made decks to people...
+Tarantel666 They're not playing Wizards precons...they have a guy on staff who builds the decks.
+Nemitri Well if one of the other comments is to be believed, I think they use buy-from-the-store decks.
+IceMetalPunk That's inaccurate. It's different between episodes. Sometimes they play decks built by the staff and sometimes premade ones.
"Been practicing my top decking" Pretty great.
Was amusing to see the blue/white deck on the Liliana playmat and the red/black on the Jace mat.
Great episode! I loved the charming goofy banter Gavin brought to the table

When Gavin summoned his Deck i nearly died xD i woke up the whole place *im crying*
"Sure, it resolves."
I actually like blue. It's fun to draw cards, then draw cards for drawing cards. Drawing cards for placing mana and blocking spells. Drawing cards for putting all of your drawn cards in your graveyard. Super fun :)
Gavin is just so adorable....too bad cuteness isn't a requirement to playing Magic well lol
I have these two decks and I know both these strategies... this was really fun to watch 👍👍
I think that Sean and his guest should play several games and act like each is the first and pick the one that best shows how magic games should go
That's the thing about Magic. Sometimes you get great strategic fights, and sometimes the game is over before it starts simply because of the card draw.
It’s weird that they say “I have to go to hospital,” but not weird that we say “I have to go to school”? 😂
A combo-contemplating Plott is the best Plott to ever Sean around.
why did they stop making episodes I used to watch these all the time. #bringitback
Not even British, but it makes total sense to say “going to hospital” - when you’re a kid, you don’t “go to THE school,” after all: you just go to school.

Always great stuff!
So the important question here is; does caffeine tap for black or green and where does the -1 counter go when the caffeine is removed?
+TheCrosshare Pretty sure caffeine is red, what with all the haste and energy.
+archer111000 well said sir
+archer111000 well said sir
+archer111000 I think an argument could be made for Black, since Black usually sacrifices life for energy/resources.

Just got into magic with friends in college. got the 2015 fat stack starter set for $40. now i play the waiting game with amazon
gavin is very chill and funny lol awesome episode
That liliana mat
Rakdos is my favorite guild ever. Red and black are my soul. Rakdos the defiler is literally the one card I’ve never lost
Say what you will about this episode, but Gavin had the best way of summoning his deck that this show has ever seen.
Channel the heart of the cards?
YU-GI-OOOH
Literally the best episode just b/c of that accent
I noticed Day 9 was Playing the Intro pack deck "Demonic Deals"
Black removal spells are very horrifying! i have a bleck deck at home which only consists of scary creatures and removal spells
Dart assasins are very effective in d&d you can throw 16 of them dealing 30-40 damage a piece

it could be cool if they got some people that makes magic cards like mark rose water, or some of the artist of the cards, maybe some from the protour.

i feel like this show has spawned in me a naughty desire to play blue.
