Damn, I'm of Irish descent (amongst a few European origins) who just happens to be Puertorriqueno, having been born in Rio Piedras. Shame I never lived there but this is a heart warmer. Sad fact, not only PR hasn't been rebuilt after the hurricane but gentrification is intensifying and that's a real cultural killer !
Also worth mentioning that first Irish in Indias (it was never América during Spanish period of the hemisphere) was about 1580. They were mostly Irish sailor conscripted by the English. Locally they were called "ganso". In 1797 when Spain and England were yet again having a meltdown, the then Governor of Puerto Rico declared that all the Irish had to leave Puerto Rico, claiming that because they spoke english, they were probably/possibly spies for the enemy. The criollos rallied around the Irish and petitioned the crown to not allow it to happen and won the petition in favor of the Irish.
🇵🇷🇨🇮 the surname "OCASIO" comes from the spanish conversion of O'casey and it traces back to irish soldiers that fought alongside the spanish in the spanish-american war. When the war was over, many irish solders simply stayed in the island and procreated with the locals...
but I have to give props to the Irish who are screaming for Justice in Palestine. They know what it's like to be invaded and oppressed. And genocided via starvation, thank you "great" Britain

yeah here in the north east coast wow the racism is overt. the Italians especially. The Irish will just basically ignore you to death. It probably would come out in force if one of theirs started dating one of ours though

Wonderful piece of history. Puerto Rico and its people are surprising. Thanks
I never knew this, that's awesome.
@DawnofSophia432 and why would that be?

My grandmom was from that town! Pedro fathers was of Basque descent
Basque grandfather here also, from Arecibo
Ahhh! So this is where that 3% Irish in my DNA come from
That would explain my five redheaded first cousins and the more distant blue eyed cousins direct from Puerto Rico
St Patrick's Day was actually created by two Irish men living in Puerto Rico who were missing their Irish homeland.

I stand with the Protestant Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland.
They have the right to their religion, but Ulster is Irish, & they have to assimilate & learn the language or move back to Britain. Tiocfaidh ár lá
