  • New Welding Truck calls for a brand new welding rig build! I'm starting on a custom welding bed project. It will be a pipeline style welding bed, but in this video, we will be focusing on how I started the build with the frame.

Pipe welders do seem to have the most interesting custom trucks. Some are down right works of art. I do like the closed trunk doodads you have there. Good stuff

I've built 7 flatbeds so far and I'm always jealous of you pipeliners. You seem to have the time to build the bed on the truck in a week or less sometimes. I've always either been driving the truck, or the customer is using it and I have to run them down on the road or farm site to take as many measurements as possible, multiple times lol. I always start with the deck skin laying upside down on my shop floor, then I build the frame and skeleton on that flat surface. then flip it over, and build the headache rack and boxes. Then I need the pickup for about 3 days to remove the original bed, make the mounts to the frame get the fuel filler neck made, then install the original bed back on and send it back for about 1 week while I paint and wire the lights. Then it's about 2 days to install, finish the final wiring, and send it out the door.

I am sure this bed will look slick. I am a old timer. Really do not care to much how beds are built today. When I came up and on my rig today. Always carried large acetylene bottle. Always two oxygen bottles standing up. A headache rack behind the welder no hoosier pole. Welders use to say a good welder can build a box that opens like a chest but a great welder can build a box that opens like a cabinet. I know you will have all your bases covered.

Good advice at the beginning about welding with the battery Still attached. That was actually one of the first question I asked a stick welder at this alignment shop I worked for "YEARS BEFORE" I went to school for welding.😂he said one time he welded on a forklift and the battery exploded. There were a lot of hazards at that job they would bend 18 wheeler truck axles back if they got screwed up during an accident. All they did was put a solid metal ball between a hydraulic press and the axle and apply air pressure the guy who ended up taking the position I was training for had his face blew off by one when it slipped out he had to get his face completely reconnstructed.anyways a bit off track good info😅

I’m not a fabricator by trade so I’m relieved I wasn’t miles off on design, even if I take wayyyyy longer and it’s not quite as sexy as yours. Thanks for posting these man!! Mechanic note to welders who hate paying mechanics or do their own wrenching. Have an EASY way to get to your in-tank fuel pump to troubleshoot or replace it without dropping the fuel tank because the dang pumps seem to die when it's full and dealing with jacks, straps and hoses is no fun. I also anti-seize ALL my truck bed bolts, tank strap bolts if I pull a tank etc so the next time is much less suffering. If you picture a piece of 8-inch pipe centered on the fuel pump and leave a way to reach it with that much clearance you can swap pumps very quickly in the field and save towing your truck to a shop. Your wallet, your call.

In the 3 main manufacturers Body Builders literature it states to disconnect the battery (s) before welding. For years I built trucks from cab & chassis and after leveling them in the shop on jack stands for the build, we always disconnected the batteries. Why take the chance.

Hey Austin, I see you using a "grass hopper" all the time and have heard you say it is so that you don't arc outside of the weld zone or something like that, my question is what would be wrong with using a magnetic ground? I am not a pipeline welder but do build steel buildings and pipe fence and love my magnetic ground.

Clearly you can do it yourself. But if you ever need a flatbed (normal, skirted, western hauler) , service body, snowplows, or lift gates you should bring it over to us at Arrowhead truck equipment in Bixby. Not saying this cause I work there but we truly do better work than perfection. Justin is all about the costumer too. Great guy to do business with.
