The line changes for Ai’s death scene may be controversial, but Mike Liscio deserves more credit for the way he sort of bridged Ai’s human and Ignis voice as he was delivering it. Really good acting.
Also don't forget the constant "is a hotdog a sandwich" questioning that I'm assuming aren't in the subbed. Also the sign about Kotor saying how Varis dead is "retired" I think he also says "like, retired retired" which heavely is applying that he's probably dead.
Oh boy, the ending in the dub… I know most people were upset (I don't blame anyone, I can see why it is dumb). But to me, it actually feels like Ai was trying to cheer up Yusaku one last time in his own way, aka doing a joke. Yes, it does cut the tension from the scene, but it just feels in character for Ai to do that. He makes jokes all the time, and when you form a close bond with someone, you learn how to joke or make pranks with them. At least, that is how I view this scene in the dub. It did felt a bit weird at first, but it eventually faded away from me.
Personally, I thought the complaints of the dub ending were down to horny fujos. I can defo see why it'd earn some ire, but it isn't out of character for Ai either.
@@Signerdragon123I don't think it just pissed off fujos. I don't ship Yusaku and Ai together at all and yet, I found it stupid to take out the "Ai means to love people. I loved you." How come the dub has such an issue with love especially when the word is thrown around between guys? Do they think love is always romantic? So Ai saying he loved Yusaku is too gay? Come on, they should've just kept it. The ones who ship them can see it romantic while everyone else can just think Ai loved Yusaku as a friend, brother, whatever. Like telling family or friends that you love them isn't that surprising? Or if not keeping the love line then let Ai tell Yusaku he was his best friend or so? The dub just makes a joke out of this last scene when it wasn't funny at all. Ai made his jokes before but in this last moment with Yusaku, he wouldn't joke at all but be honest with him. Which is why the jpn version hadn't had him crack a joke.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the second recap episode having drastic dialoge change to have Ghost Gal fall for Ai's acting with Playmaker complimenting the egomaniac in an out-of-character manner.
Another major change I found in the dub involves Homura. Or rather Theodore, or should I say ‘Teddy’ as said by Kiku. Is that he is made out to be some of genius in school, hence why he rarely goes to school. As opposed to the original where Soulburner is an individual that is still at a lost in his life. And kind of just gave up on life in a sense, thus ditching school a la a dilqunent. If anything he is of average intelligence and had Flame hack his way into enrolling him to the high school that Yusaku was at.
I think the only thing I liked better in the dub is Revolver more caring when it comes to Spectre, Faust, Vyra and Genome basically losing their lives for him in season 1. The subs had him just talk about how his obsession with Playmaker lead to this fate while in the dub, he even mentions his fallen comrades during a duel and is more openly angry about what happened with them.
in episode 37 when playmaker defeats spector on the bridge they cut the part of him talking to the tree and instead he's just laughing and walking like a crazy man and then playmaker and AI run past him and AI goes "really.. walking!" and then spector Explodes off screen, that's my favorite DUB moment
Vrains dub: Ai saying he loved Yusaku is too gay or whatever (despite platonic love exists) so we censor this by Ai calling him a meatbag instead. Also Vrains dub: > lets Aoi make a freaking Tinder reference > has Ghost Girl actually say she's shipping Playmaker and Blue Angel
As another commenter mentioned: Ai: How could you dump me? Yusaku: You’re wrong, I haven’t dumped you, Ai. This is actual dialogue from the dub. I really doubt they changed that line because it was "too gay". The most likely reason was simply because the pun on Ai's name didn't translate.

But in the dub, like with the Meatbag line, they make it a cheap laugh and have him say No, and that A.I. is the worst strategist Playmaker ever met.
All in all, I really liked VRAINS, and I think dub was pretty solid. The localized names were pretty faithful ("Skye" fits with the blue theme of "Aoi," "Ghost Gal" means the same thing as "Ghost Girl" and conveniently avoids overlapping with the series of hand traps, etc.), the quips were funny, and even Ai's "final" moments were surprisingly good (the dub adding a bit of banter kind of fits the dynamic between Playmaker and Ai, and they still had dialogue reflecting on their friendship). That said, I'd be flattered if I made fanart that was used in the dub... but it wasn't my art. Can't really defend them taking the artist's work without permission/credit.
@J.B. Yeah, I think the hand traps are unofficially called the "Ghost Girls." I'd rather Emma's name not be the same as that fan nickname, though, just because it avoids a bit of confusion (I looked up "ghost girl yugioh" once before watching VRAINS to find the wiki page for the hand traps and was a bit surprised that the first result was the VRAINS character haha)
I figured blue angel landing is censored cause i don’t think many liked it even to show how cruel her enemy is, I just don’t like some changes on backstory that made her less important plot wise cause she already suffered enough negligence in sub.
Vrains was the first series I saw entirely subbed and the last I'd seen in full. Might just be the only time I'll instinct think of the official names and feel weird about the dub ones, though few. 7) Honestly, this one kinda works. Back in the sub, Lightning’s stated goal, before outright revealing himself as evil, was to shadow puppet the path humanity goes down from outside of Link VRAINS. It’s not as humanizing as realizing via simulation that he’s the ultimate cause of a seemingly inevitable breakdown of human-Ignis relations and fearing culpability or punishment if it ever came to light but his actions would fall in line with the mission statement dub-wise… he’d just be taking the shadiest and most underhanded methods imaginable to get it all done. Just as Kogami intended. 8) I’m gonna have to side with the Dub on this one. While cutting Miyu and her shared backstory with Aoi in its entirety was rough, there’s also the matter that Aoi straight up spilled Miyu’s full name and alluded to her being a Lost Incident victim. While fully aware that Frog and Pidgeon were in the room with her and Bohman. And almost certainly broadcasting the duel for prime time, which she should expect as a seasoned Charisma Duelist. I watched Yu-Gi-Oh vrains subbed, and I play Yu-Gi-Oh duel links with Japanese voices, and gotta say, not seeing text calling him "revolver" legit made me so confused XD

There was another change as well when Theodore's parents died in the original but in the English dub they were missing. This is kinda the same change you get in the other Yu-Gi-Oh series

I'm surprised they used actual fan art in the show. This is just my personal opinion, but if the Yugioh anime used my fan art even without my permission, I'd be ecstatic. I kind of like the change that the Ignis were created to aide humanity.
From the bit of it, I’ve seen, AI calling Yusaku Meatbag Backdoes a lot to “humanize” the pair’s bond. I think the Prime version kept in audio of Yusaku being jolted after losses while he was captive in the flashbacks, could be wrong though.
1:24 this is hypocritical of Yu-Gi-Oh tbh Yu-Gi-Oh 5DS at least in the English dub called a synchro Crimson Mefiest But the TCG called it Blood Mefiest So why allow a card to have blood in the name but change Bloodsheppard to The Sheppard
I know it's a bit of a hot take, but I do like the dub. They spent the entire series poking fun of each other, so it feels so true to Ai's character that he threw in one more "meatbag" name.
17:18 a smile right out of the graphic novel five nights at freddy's the silver eyes what is he stealing ideas from William afton...... Wait but that would mean he'll stuff his victims into animatronics that'll get possessed and get revenge by doing the same to him

It's especially weird when Disney, Dreamworks and co. can talk about death in their shows and movies for kids but it's treated like a no-go for Yugioh...
@@mikai4738 Lol I was just about to comment that talking about how Disney shows death in their animated movies and shows, yet its a problem when Yu Gi Oh does it.
Ngl after having watched both versions of Ai's death multiple times, i really like the dub version. Not more than the sub but still. At first it cheered me up while I was still sobbing from the sub, then it made me more sad when I figured Ai was trying to cheer Yusaku up by saying that.
I feel like cause of how serious Vrains was Konami Cross Media tried their best to minimise it but there was still some changes
It's been way too long since we've got another one of these videos.
I'm surprised they used actual fan art in the show. This is just my personal opinion, but if the Yugioh anime used my fan art even without my permission, I'd be ecstatic.
I kind of like the change that the Ignis were created to aide humanity.
Yeah idk how I feel, cause I would be pretty happy but I'd also feel weird cause they used it without my permission
From the bit of it, I’ve seen, AI calling Yusaku Meatbag Backdoes a lot to “humanize” the pair’s bond. I think the Prime version kept in audio of Yusaku being jolted after losses while he was captive in the flashbacks, could be wrong though.
Man Vrains was truly a masterpiece. Miss watching it every week
I never seen VRAINS in English dub so I was scared going into this video on how much the English dub changed.
GREAT YU-GI-OH VRAIN CENTOR AND CHANGE
How about you do a veido about your favorite changes
Came back to watch this after the podcast, Im so 50/50 on this dub. Maybe itll grow on me eventually
Interested to see this One because the Dub is the only one I havent watched yet
12:56 Just pure gold 😂😂😂😂😂
5:12 Pog ai became Danmari @ignister Kappa
I like yugioh vrains sub better in my opinion because it has a very strong feeling and emotion. The dub was ok but not as good as the sub.
advertisement in the first 2 seconds is crazy ngl
The card text one is due to laws related to advertisements, if I recall correctly.
It is completely understandable why Aoi trying to save Miyu is removed. This plot is just so bad that it should not exist in the first place.
1:24 this is hypocritical of Yu-Gi-Oh tbh
Yu-Gi-Oh 5DS at least in the English dub called a synchro Crimson Mefiest
But the TCG called it Blood Mefiest
So why allow a card to have blood in the name but change Bloodsheppard to The Sheppard
Amazing
Thank you!
@@YugiohEverything no problem
The fact they reference tinder is something funny and yet weirdly off for dubbing for kids.
This is gonna be the video that makes me watch vrains
Blue angel might have swiped right on Playmaker before.I see it.
10:11 Episode 15
Point 6 - didn’t the Playmaker v Hanoi conclude in episode 2, not 3?
How dare the dub kill the Nabee dream
Going to be extra weird on the off-chance it's ever actually printed.
