Former U.S. secretary of state and national security adviser Henry Kissinger has died at the age of 100. He leaves behind a legacy of American statecraft that brought war, covert intervention and mass atrocities to Southeast Asia, South Asia and South America. "Few people have had a hand in so much death and destruction," says our guest, human rights attorney and war crimes prosecutor Reed Brody. By some accounts, Kissinger was responsible for the deaths of at least 3 million people. We focus today on Kissinger's actions in Cambodia, Bangladesh (previously East Pakistan) and East Timor, where, Brody argues, Kissinger ordered and oversaw U.S. actions that would make him "liable for war crimes."

@@jimbob3030 I like the concept of "elohim denier". We can argue about definitions and history, but then, we must also discuss how scripture has been edited over the millenia, and twisted to fit agendas.
I am not promoting this concept as much as I am parroting some point of view I hear recently.
I have my own intuition about elohim, and how the term fits into my direct personal experience. We have so many more tools than the ancients had.

What happens now? Now that the man is deceased? Throw him in a hole, and cover him with dirt. There's still plenty of war crime going on, that needs to be addressed in real time. It is a disgrace (only another among many) to our country that Kissinger lived out his time in wealth and comfort. Justice operates much too slowly when the most prominent criminals against humanity still benefit from the humanity of the rest of us.

This led to Kissinger could not travel to several countries as he was under threat of prosicution. In Hitchens last interviews one thing he regreted was that he would not live to see Kissinger stand trial for his crimes.

Yeah, .good book. In particular, Nixon and Kissinger were arguably complicit in the Pinochet regime of Chile, one of the most infamous Latin American military juntas. Hitchens makes it clear that Kissinger, the White House and the CIA were actively helping and securing the overthrow of president Allende of Chile, a guy with complete democratic credentials and a democratic socialist rather than some violent communist (of course Nixon wouldn't get that distinction anyway). The US was actively assisting the coup makers both before and after the coup, and during the fateful day of September 11, 1973 itself a US navy flotilla was parked on the ocean just off sight from Santiago de Chile, to be able to intervene if there was any hassle for the Chilean generals. As many suspected already at the time, Pinochet was mostly a U.S. proxy and the White House is morally co-responsible for the disasters and tyranny that engulfed Chile.

The President was the decision maker with respect to approving strategies. The military orders bombings, based on strategies approved by the SECDEF or President.

to the reply above, where is this person saying that no one should’ve spoken ill of kissinger while he was alive as well? plenty of people criticized him then also. they are just saying that as his legacy is discussed more since he’s died, we have an obligation to counter any narrative that this wasn’t a completely despicable person, because simply looking at the facts shows that he was.

Decades back, in late 1972, South Vietnam and the United States were winning the Vietnam War decisively by every conceivable measure. That was the view of our enemy, the North Vietnamese government officials. Victory was apparent when President Nixon ordered the U.S. Air Force to bomb industrial and military targets in Hanoi, North Viet Nam's capital city, and in Haiphong, its major port city, and we would stop the bombing if the North Vietnamese would attend the Paris Peace Talks that they had left earlier. The North Vietnamese did go back to the Paris Peace talks, and we did stop the bombing as promised.
On January the 23rd, 1973, President Nixon gave a speech to the nation on primetime television announcing that the Paris Peace Accords had been initialed by the United States, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, the Viet Cong, and the Accords would be signed on the 27th. What the United States and South Vietnam received in those accords was victory. At the White House, it was called "VV Day," "Victory in Vietnam Day."
The U.S. backed up that victory with a simple pledge within the Paris Peace Accords saying: should the South require any military hardware to defend itself against any North Vietnam aggression we would provide replacement aid to the South on a piece-by-piece, one-to-one replacement, meaning a bullet for a bullet; a helicopter for a helicopter, for all things lost -- replacement. The advance of communist tyranny had been halted by those accords.

Then it all came apart. And It happened this way: In August of the following year, 1974, President Nixon resigned his office as a result of what became known as "Watergate." Three months after his resignation came the November congressional elections and within them the DEMOCRATS won a landslide victory for the new Congress and many of the members used their new majority to de-fund the military aid the U.S. had promised, piece for piece, breaking the commitment that we made to the South Vietnamese in Paris to provide whatever military hardware the South Vietnamese needed in case of aggression from the North. Put simply and accurately, a majority of DEMOCRATS of the 94th Congress did not keep the word of the United States. ( ROBERT KKK BYRD, BIDEN, TED CHAPPAQUIDDICK KENNEDY, GARY donna rice HART, GEROGE MCGOVERN, HUBERT HUMPHREY, DAN DOPE INYOUE )
On April the 10th of 1975, President Gerald Ford appealed directly to those members of the congress in an evening Joint Session, televised to the nation. In that speech he literally begged the Congress to keep the word of the United States. But as President Ford delivered his speech, many of the members of the Congress walked out of the chamber. Many of them had an investment in America's failure in Vietnam. They had participated in demonstrations against the war for many years. They wouldn't give the aid.

Which means the US, even the elite, will no longer count among the developed nations and make the money it can still make from witchcraft only, the time it will take for it to fall into Haitian-like poverty and insignificance. What I fear is that he might get for the US, in exchange for what remains of its industry, a small black hole. When you have got a small black hole it can produce any amount of energy for free (beware of the new age prophets of "free energy") by throwing whatever matter into it : once you do that you start a process that will eventually make you make mistakes and engulf the whole planet.

My buddy Banseng Ho and I went to the Lincoln Memorial on 4th of July where Rev Billy Graham was giving a speech. There were 10,000 angry protesters against Kissinger's Cambodian War. RBG gave a rousing 'America's Destiny' heart of darkness (1970) then shoved his fist up to an angry sky, white hair tousling, with "BOMBTHEGOOKSFORJESUS!"
I was 30 feet from him. He dove into a White stretch limo and sped away, as the sound of helicopters approached, budda-budda-budda-budda. The crowd was now rhythmically chanting Hell No We Won't Go, around the Reflecting Pool, like that scene in Forrest Gump.
Then a squadron of Huey helicopters flew low overhead, as Capitol police on horseback took up positions. Hueys dropped 100s of small American flags on diaper-white parachutes. The crowd started to howl at the police cordon.
Hueys returned, dropping tear gas canisters on the crowd, as Capitol police beat people under the flying hooves with their truncheons. Blood everywhere. The stampeding crowd flipped some police cars and set them on fire. As the hot July sun beat down, the DC Mall was smoke and fire and inert bodies, like a war zone.
Nothing in the DC news afterward. Just another day of writing more meaningless environmental policy, that would one day be used for mandatory energy austerity. and compulsory carbon tithe lockdowns, while Kissinger kept busy loading more fossil-fuel napalm for Perpetual War.

The US prosecuted the war exactly the same way in Cambodia and Laos as it did in Vietnam itself. I don't understand why it's only considered war crimes in Laos and Cambodia, but I guess as long as you're "officially at war" then the indiscriminate bombing of mostly civilians and the most heinous war crimes you can possibly imagine that were inflicted on the Vietnamese people themselves is never even mentioned. The entire Vietnam war in its entirety was one big war crime/genocide. Also, unless I'm mistaken, after the Khmer Rouge were removed from power by the Vietnamese, the United States and United Nations not only did not lift a finger to try to hold any Khmer Rouge accountable, they in fact chose to continue to recognize the Khmer Rouge as Cambodia's legitimate government, a fact that I think tells anyone all they need to know about the US, UK, UN, etc.

In the long list of Henry's war crimes let me add the military coup he orginised in Greece in 1967. Then Colonels majority started acting in a somewhat nationalist manner.
Henry had them overthrown in 1973 by one of them who he then instructed to the non defence of the Republic of Cyprus by Greece while simultaneously gave the green light to the Turks for invasion .
This illegal invasion resulted in the also illegal occupation of 40% of Cyprus island and war crimes commited.
Despite three condemning UN resolutions the situation remains unchanged to this day while even more crimes have been commited.
Cyprus and Greece is one nation in two countries and both members of the EU, yet the silence about this invasion and occupation is deafening .
At the same time Greece's western allies are rallying in support of Ukraine.
I guess they are preserving Henry's legacy!

As an outsider who has followed the USA political scene for years. American democracy is broken because of the extreme polarization that has occurred between Democrats and Republicans. Neither party has a foundational ideology that guides their platforms and governance. If these conditions existed during world war 2, you would have had one party saying Hitler was man-of-the-year and the other saying he was the most evil man in history. As a result, it would have taken the USA 4 years to decide which side to fight on and then it would have been a half ass effort. Seriously the USA, as leaders of the free world, need to fix this!
    - China is the world's greatest threat - Nixon/Kissinger's establishing diplomatic and then open market conditions for China is a black stain on their personal history and that of the USA. How does the world's leading democracy turn a blind eye to the abuses of one of the world's worst tyrants (Mao) and a paedophile. The USA created modern China and needs to dismantle Xi's China by forcing USA investment and firms to relocate back to the USA and developing democracies.
    - Border - the USA cannot maintain an open border and expect to remain a leading economy. There is a level of migration that will breakdown USA society and you're there now. Close the border, control legal immigration, block and expel migrants quickly.
    - UnderClass - there is still a large class of uneducated people in the USA, especially in the south, who have an inherited culture that is the same as the 3rd world - teenage pregnancies, school is a waste of time, no ambition. Extreme measures must be taken to change this culture that make use of every organisation that can help bring culture, especially schools and churches. Provide funding t churches to preach the power of education for change, open churches at night and weekends for tutoring and safe areas, use schools for evening and weekend programs. Invest in Americans - they're not going anywhere. The culture itself needs to change. Why is the Gates foundation not trying to help Americans
    - International - the USA has to be consistent in who it helps and who it does not. Stop aiding and abetting tyrants. Protect and invest in emerging democracies - especially in your own backyard of latin America. Help these countries build infrastructure and industrial economies. As they become wealthier the migrant problem will be solved and the USA will have strong allies that are champions of democracy. India - the world's largest democracy - has still not forgiven the USA for support their tyrannical enemy Pakistan and Pakistan had no problem biting the hand that fed them and is now buddies with China.
    What does it take?

    • @timtrewyn453

Many interesting ideas. Check out the American Solidarity Party.
The writers of the American Constitution appear to have understood a number of things:
      1. The morale of "The People" does matter when it comes to maintaining productivity and a military.
      2. The morale of the elite minority must be guarded from the selfishness and generally, relatively poor judgment of "The People".
      3. The system must favor the elite, because the elite lead the nation to greater power through invention and implementation, raising the general standard of living.
      4. But the elite tend to monarchy and autocracy, which by their nature crush the morale of "The People". See North Korea, Russia, etc.
      5. Therefore, a large majority of "The People", that is, their opinion gathering the approval of 3/4 of the State legislatures, can alter the system. Ultimately they can check and balance the system peacefully if they organize to do so. The American system is designed to strike a balance between the morale of the elite and the morale of "The People" and veer away from civil war.
It has always been the underlying tension in human society. The elite face the dilemma of being in the numerical minority, and thus dependent on the cooperation and morale of the masses. While not the nation of the world's largest population, the American nation has more billionaires by far than any other nation. America, by design, is the friend of ambition and achievement. When coupled with a fair deal for the people, the result is the world's most powerful nation. Every day, thousands line up to join the project. I don't think that's all bad as long as they come to be ambitious Americans.
