Actually whole genres like house and hiphop are based on sampling funky and disco songs, and since all of the most iconic grooves are used multiple times, now they're copying copies. Pop songs are always based on stolen beats and melodies, nothing is interesting in that. Actually Snow's version of Informer is from around 1992-93 or something around that time - my early childhood, I feel so old now 😢 😂 -, and he features in the new version as well, so it's another category a bit. Actually I like it both. The sampled version is Better of Alone is like killing my childhood's one of the most iconic Eurohouse song. It's from around 2001 if I remember well. (Since then I've checked: Informer - 1992, and Better of Alone is from 1999. Actually from that era nowadays house producers are getting oversample/over-revork the Eiffel 56's Blue as well. Another iconic beat from around the end of the last century-beginning the new one. Almost all of the best euro music made then.)
Can everybody just take a moment to appreciate Joel. I've had a really rough day today, depression wise, and your videos allow me to have a few minutes of happiness each time you upload. Thank you so much for making my day a little brighter xx
I like how the Daft Punk song and Kanye song were put in there like everyone didn't know it was a sample... How could you not know it's sampled when Daft Punk are literally in the music video for Kaney West's Stronger music video... That's the only rant I have on this video... Because it was more like a collaboration than a sample...
I don’t think sampling automatically means copying and being unoriginal. It could be but it still takes creativity to make a new song out of a sample from another song
Mark Ronson did a TED Talk a few years ago about sampling, and he talked in length about how it generally works better when an artist picks something that's more meaningful to them and they crafts it into something that's their own rather than coopting nostalgia and banking on that alone
To use the samples you have to ask the Creator of it to use it. If they are dead then........Idk. but example, Katy Perry had to pay 8 million dollars to some dude for using one of his lines in dark horse without his permission
@@deariisy At first Katy had to pay but she got her money back or something. "Flame filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Perry and the other songwriters, claiming that "Dark Horse" copied from his 2008 song "Joyful Noise". On July 29, 2019, a federal jury ruled in favor of Flame. The jury ordered Perry, her collaborators, and associated labels to pay $2.78 million in damages. However, in part due to a similar judgement that found Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" clear of copyright infringement in the Ninth Circuit, the jury award was vacated on appeal in March 2020." So basically she got her money back.
Exactly not everything has to be original. Usually originality is useful when you try to get a certain melody because you came up with it or something. Samples=creativity its about how you use them too

Gangsta's Paradise actually wistfully refers to how people live the dangerous and violent gansgter life in the delusion of paradise, and the rest of the lyrics actually speak sadly about the dangers and problems with that life. *checkmate JoelFromRoomieOfficial* (One of my favourite songs, didn't know it was sampled so directly :/)

Absolutely, but they might just be too specific to the experiences of black americans for a white man from sweden to fully understand and relate to. And that's okay, but he really should have done a bit more research. Even watching the movie would give you a bit of insight lol.
To be fair I just read the lyrics and they really aren't that bad. It addresses the problem with black American's limited possibilities and how the people that are supposed to fix it have no clue what their life is like. It's not that bad although it's true that a lot of the song is pretty much "gangsta yo"
I dont understand why sampling stuff makes you not like the song. Like when I found out about "Crazy in Love" i thought it was genius. Mind you most artists that sample stuff even give credit to the original creators

@@ascensionismo sim kk fiquei feliz de entender (ou no caso, não precisar traduzir na minha mente kk) a música original de onde on the floor pegou o sample, já que era em português.
Steve Winwood agreed to re-record his vocals exclusively for Call On Me. The story behind that song is amazing. Personal opinon: the greatest EDM song of all time.
I think we should only talk about samples when people actually take a sample from a recording and use that in their song. If you re-record it, it's no longer an actual sample, it's just a quote. So, for example the Kesha song didn't use an actual sample from the 1893 song - it just quoted that song. And I think this is also how samples were originally used - originally hip hop artists just used samples from funk records and rapped over them, basically creating new music over the same "beat". But quotes are another thing - that's just writing a new song based on an older musical idea.
Thats what I’m thinking. I’ve always heard sample meaning actually recording and giving credit to the song and artist that came before, so that you can use that recording in your song. These are more people that use the same chord progressions or similar words. Examples of actual sampling would be Fall Out Boy’s “Uma Thurman” sampling the Munsters theme song, or Panic! At The Disco’s “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time” sampling “Rock Lobster”.
The great part about Gold Digger, the singing is done by Jaimee Foxx who portrayed Ray Charles and did all the vocals for the movie...and was either told by Ray himself or his family that his voice was strikingly similar
Thank you so much for including Imogen in this. She's my favourite artist for so many reasons, but the sad thing is that hardly anyone has even heard of her! Yet you've all heard her music SOMEWHERE. She's a fantastic creator, inventor, lyricist, sound engineer etc, I cannot recommend her music enough. Just the amount of work that goes into each song, her creativity and layers upon layers of sound and tiny details that you can easily miss. Some of her older vlogs on youtube show some of the amazing ideas and processes she goes through during song creation. Astounding and leaves you feeling so inspired. Just a brilliant brilliant artist who, in my opinion, deserves more recognition than a few current 'artists' plunged into the top 10 for seemingly no reason and no real talent tbh.
First time I saw her was on The Letterman Show. She was nervous but did it all live. With her kinda selfmade loopstation-like build. Amazing singer, Imogen Heap! Has all her stuff on physical media.
*Hears Hide and Seek* Me: Is that the meme death song? Also, Waka Waka was a celebration of Africa so of course it takes inspiration from one of Africa's old songs.
Joel, I feel your pain. I was a huge 5ive (Five) fan growing up and I too feel as though they were very under appreciated compared to the likes of the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. I felt 5ive had the better melodies, songs etc. And Ritchie Neville was my favorite member of 5ive. I'll always be a 5ive fan no matter what and I'm 34 now.
I liked them too but they are pretty much unknown in the US so they're not talked about as much as the other American boybands. Even BSB have always been a lot more popular in Europe than in their own country. They never had a number 1 in the US, unlike Nsync. Incredible but true unfortunately.
yeah gangsta’s paradise is a really interesting and nuanced song about class and race and is a really interesting flip on the stevie sample lyrically. and it was also one of the first songs to break hip hop into the mainstream. it’s a really important and great track and it really annoyed me how much roomie lowballed it here
Plus coolio and lv performed gangsta’s paradise live and towards the end Stevie wonder came out and he started singing the chorus to gangsta’s paradise while lv sang the chorus to pastime paradise. Not sure if you’ve see it or not but it’s really cool
Just by watching this video, I now know Roomie has never actually paid attention to or even listened to the lyrics of Gangsta’s Paradise. Gangsta’s Paradise doesn’t glorify being a gangsta. It talks about how he was born into poverty, lived a life where he had to learn how to fend for himself, and how he’s so damaged now and how he’ll never be able to escape the cycle or make something out of himself. The song is ABSOLUTELY about classist issues.
Gangsta’s Paradise is one of the greatest works of hood existentialism. With each verse he outlines his acts or inactions and justifications for them. Then he ends each verse with first desperation then uncertainty then finally resignation that he will not make it out of his situation. The pre chorus highlights how this lifestyle only stands to hurt everyone in these circumstances. The chorus which includes the change to gangstas paradise denotes the glorification of the gangsta lifestyle. It holds up as a both explanation of and cautionary tale to the people in these socioeconomic positions that drive them towards the gangstas lifestyle. Stevie made a great song but this is nothing to be scoffed at, even the change to gangsta is important and meaningful.

Pop singers: sample songs

"SaMpLe SoNgS iS tHe LeAsT cReAtIvE tHiNg To Do"
Actually whole genres like house and hiphop are based on sampling funky and disco songs, and since all of the most iconic grooves are used multiple times, now they're copying copies.

And Daft Punk also sample that song from Cola Bottle Baby
A lot of these are more like reimaginings or collabs or remakes
@@wanttj 💯
Daft Punk weren’t actually in the video, but the actors who played them in Electroma was in it.
Actually, we all have heard Roomie's voice without auto tune multiple times. He sings in between the videos. That's enough proof :)
Yes!!! Just because some of his songs use autotune, it doesn’t mean he can’t sing well in real life. Joel is an amazing singer❤️
Firstly I think he can sing really, good, don't get me wrong. But you just edit autotune at anytime. I think, Im sure, sorry if I'm wrong
Everyone uses some sort of pitch correction in the music industry. Even if he uses it, everyone basically does.
The anime music video is from a movie called interstella, Daft punk actually did a whole soundtrack for the movie
I don’t see how sampling songs is a bad thing, I think it’s really cool how producers can incorporate things into new things
Exactly not everything has to be original. Usually originality is useful when you try to get a certain melody because you came up with it or something. Samples=creativity its about how you use them too
Fun fact the Ben E King song was featured on both the soundtrack and the movie stand by me.
People misunderstood the definitions of "samlplig' and "stealing"
Emp_T_ Marble Bag yeah, it’s not like sampling is an integral part of musical culture and art in general. It’s not like every major musician samples. It’s not like culture can be built upon.

The hook is literally: “Tell me why are we so blind to see that the ones we hurt are you and me”
Thank you. It's an amazing song because of how introspective Coolio is, wondering if he'll even live to see 24. Definitely one of the best sampled songs, if not the best.
Absolutely, but they might just be too specific to the experiences of black americans for a white man from sweden to fully understand and relate to. And that's okay, but he really should have done a bit more research. Even watching the movie would give you a bit of insight lol.
And the lyrics of Amish Paradise have never been less relevant.
To be fair I just read the lyrics and they really aren't that bad. It addresses the problem with black American's limited possibilities and how the people that are supposed to fix it have no clue what their life is like. It's not that bad although it's true that a lot of the song is pretty much "gangsta yo"

but it really doesn't fit in rihanna's songs

Avril co-writer for Rihanna’s song, that’s probably why the used her vocals
Most likely the reason why she is listed as a co-writer is because they used her song as a sample, not the other way around.

The disrespect I felt when he over looked the song…
