For songs from 10 years ago, I automatically expected to see the first single or song that made the artists blow up, but then I realize how much longer some of these artists have been around in the industry. For some, 10 years ago is already like midway into their career. Especially for younger artists like Miley Cyrus, this really puts things into perspective
Me expecting to hear a Hannah Montana song and then hearing Wrecking Ball. Me:..Oh. I am just old.
Challenge idea for roomie: You remake songs only from your memory. You are not allowed to look up the lyrics or listen to the song during the process, you can only use what you actually remember to make it. Would be fun if it's a song you don't really remember the exact text to.
That would be a fun challenge with his friends. See who gets the closest
I love this idea
Upvote!
I think he has done this,
Good idea 😂
Doing One Direction members would be cool! Considering they were together in 2014, and now 10 years later they are solo. Especially since Zayn is releasing an album soon and he has completely changed genres!
Wait what one direction part ways?
@@FistNoob yes haha! Back in 2015
The Nick Jonas song Roomie was talking about is "Jealous". Justin Timberlake's "Selfish" does sound a lot like it.
I find it funny that Cruel Summer was used as the "now" song considering it came out 5 years ago lol.
Yea 2024 Taylor has poetic music comming out soon.
Yeah it really doesn’t make sense and he probably should not have put her on this list if I’m being honest bc she has not released anything this year yet tho she will be
Cruel summer got dropped as a single last year
@@Itstotallynotaly she released multiple things last year though so he probably could have used that
lol ig it’s become her new signature hit
I still remember when he was just Pre Malone

You should do the top 100 most critically acclaimed songs
Yeah, there's a website that is a sort of aggregator for music reviews. It's AcclaimedMusic or something like that. Can't link to stuff on RUclips without it hiding the comment. But there you can sort by most acclaimed artists, albums, or songs, and you can do it by individual years or decades. It's really cool. Apparently, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is the most acclaimed album of all time.
"I'm glad i don't have an Eye Tracker on" - Roomie 2024
Why did my man admit to it 😅 just outed himself
We all were thinking the same thing lmao
I mean we know before we were doing the same 😂
Roomie every year 😂 I feel like there’s always a video once a year where he goes “I’m glad I don’t have an Eye tracker on” 😂😅
It might be fun if he actually did have one for a video, even if the tracker was Patreon exclusive
He didn't dare to bring Twenty One Pilots in this list. They freaking change the genre with the release of every new album
Fr!
fr when he said something like bands usually don't change there sound much or whatever i was like- BUT TOP THO
@@ohhello1809on top of that you have Paramore which is the biggest example of a band changing genres with every album. I was looking out for some top though with overcompensate being in the hot 100 and releasing recently and 10 years ago being between the releases of vessel and blurryface
came in here just to see if he dared bahaha
also holy damn this made me look up album dates and vessel is more than a decade old at this point. what on earth

Got me ROLLING you crack me up, best impression I’ve heard (only impression I’ve heard) 😭🤚
It's interesting that Joel said "That was barely Pharrell Williams" when most people actually know him as a writer & producer. He produced a lot of the top 1 songs in the last decades, also known for helping produce & write a lot of rap hits.
I think you're thinking of Jealous by Nick Jonas. It has the falsetto and talks about the exact same thing.
Meghan trainor’s music never changes istg its the same song over and over 😭
Good grief, yes. Her nasally singing style grates on my nerves. Maybe that’s just me, though.
I honestly really like her new song though. And she has done diffrent stuff especially on her album TREAT MYSELF
They really are all the same. Makes me crazy.
I've never liked any of her music. They all sound the same...terrible!
she's probably the only one on the list who still doing the same schtick 10 years after
Should have put something in midnight album for Taylor Swift. Or like any artist in their latest songs. Just to show the difference in the pass decade
I was half expecting 1989 vs 1989 to be honest.
Lol Blank Space vs. Blank Space (Taylor's Version) is what it should've been.
Could be wrong but that new Miley video feels very Shania Twain inspired video wise to me but Miley could just be into fashion as well. Some of these artists really haven't changed and I never put together how many video game related songs Imagine Dragons have done until now.
And single ladies 🎉
You should check out Big Time Rush. They were active 10 years ago because they starred in the Nickelodeon show by the same name. They became a legit band outside of the show. They released albums and toured during that time also. They recently made a comeback and released new music with an updated sound. They have also been touring again.I would to hear what you think about their music.
Oml thnx for the info I was obsessed and would love to see them together again
Joel: It's maximalist for sure
Me: wth does maximalist sound like? thousand layers of music and sound? No idea what he means.
- Jacob Collier plays -
Me: Yeah... I see what he's talking about.
To be fair, Pharrell has always been a producer first and just happened to be successful with his own music too.
Ngl Tyler, The Creator deserves to be on this video. He went from edgy teen to a mature adult and his lyrics and production has changed alot
Yes! Would love to see him being featured in an eventual Pt. 2.
Right
IKRR I LOVE BOTH
Imagine Dragons do a lot of video game collabs cause they're huge gamers themselves
It's funny how the two Meghan Trainor songs sounded so similar. That's actually how I found your channel a while ago. I heard clips of a few of her songs and was thinking "I can't be the only one who thinks they all sound the same", so I went on RUclips and looked it up. I found your "songs that sound exactly the same" videos, and I don't remember if you talked about Meghan in one of them, but regardless I still subscribed after watching the video!
Her producer found one cool trick and that’s all they needed lol
Why you shared this what you dud above
The new Miley Cyprus video reminds me of Rocky Horror Picture Show, with the zoomed in mouth and the hands from Time Warp.
Omg yeah, very Trixie/the usher
Miley has been one of my favorite artists for quite a while. I love that she's always reimagining herself. I always look forward to what she comes up with next!
2:40 that sounds like a cool lyric writing exercise, but it does certainly water down the other elements of song creation.
15:25 Mum there is a fricking lady on our chandelier
I really miss the music of 10+ years ago. So much nostalgia here
Its so funny that lighthouse keeper was released in 2020 and after that he had also released a new album but it is still used as 2024 in this video lol! But great stuff keep it up!
Yeah…that was a surprising pick. I was expecting to see any between “I’m Not Here To Make Friends”, “VULGAR” (with Madonna), or “In The City” (with Charli XCX) - all 2023 releases which show how much Sam’s image and vibe has changed since 2014.
Thought we were gonn see songs like "party in the usa" i feel old now
Year 2 of waiting for Roomie to find out that Pharrell is a prolific producer and who has written and produced so many well loved bangers. From Holla Back Girl to Slave 4 U. Someone plz tell him D:
When he was doing the weekends 10 years ago vs now he said he was glad about not having a eye tracker
Should’ve chosen Taylor’s Version of Blank Space for TS for Now
Yeah probably, but it's basically the same song so it doesn't show much change for her
Don't do this , tv are for fans to care about not general audience.
@@Flixtex mate, it's okay for non swifties to listen to taylor's version. i'd prefer it if more of them did

7:00 I'm really enjoying the alternate chord progression! It really makes a very familiar, standard song feel different.
speaking of interpolation, there's a German song called "1,2,3,4: Heute Nacht da Feiern Wir" that, to me, sound like a very clear interpolation of the YMCA, but I see nothing about it online.
I know I am getting older when I like the older songs better.
Not necessarily. A lot of the older songs were hits and the current songs seemed to be chosen kind of randomly.
@@missoats8731You’re spot-on with your assessment. “yes, and?”, “Agora Hills”, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM”, “Cruel Summer”, and “CARNIVAL” are the only *big hits* off the 2024 selections (“Popular”, “Training Season”, “FTCU”, and “Selfish” being moderate successes), and it’s still pretty early to evaluate their staying power and long-term presence. It doesn’t help other artists featured here have fallen off in popularity, so their new songs will understandably be less instant compared to their 2014 classics.
15:45 I like how they misspelled the word afraid in the music video and no one realized 😂

Interesting video, great artists. Let this be a series👏👏
WHERE IS TWENTYONE PILOTS
This was pretty enjoyable! You seem to be happier in general and I love that. Physical and mental health is always important. Some of the artists' music that I liked then and also now are: The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, and Drake. Even though it's been 10 years, their voices still sound amazing and they still have great songs that I like. Of course some style of music has changed, but I still enjoy their songs, then and now. A few artists' music that I liked better before are: Sam Smith, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift. They have always been talented, but for me a lot of their older songs seem more emotional and deeper. I hope you have great weekend and stay healthy! And as a Patreon, you're very welcome! Thank You for all the early access videos and for trying to keep it positive. You are awesome!😎
Re: TSwift. Cruel Summer was written for Lover, which was supposed to come out after 1989. But then she did Reputation instead. So I'd say it was a bad choice for comparison..
It was also released 5 years ago. Should've used something from Midnights SNTV or 1989TV
beyonce is from texas i think thats the reason for the album
also she can hit the lower register
Oh my, ten years already ...
I love seeing the evolutions, some are really mind blowing.
YES you’ve finally covered Jacob Collier in a video, he’s great!

She literally does!

@@pranav.m.warrier7407 I mean, she's ten years older now, so it's normal not to look exactly the same. But, the way you guys say she's different, looks like she's done tones of plastic surgeries like human barbies do...

Can we just take a second to acknowledge how this man looks exactly like Cole Sprouse 🤔
When I look up all the popular music I used to listen to I try to go through the ones I didn't know about for fun.
wow Roomie knows 100 gecs? thats cool
In this video I saw Sia's face for the first time 😂
I'd love for you to do a deepdive into Kylie Minogue's entire discography. I recently saw a Twitter thread about it and she's got SO many songs I didn't even realise how much I'd listen to her.
The Producer cut off cruel summer right before the bridge. Thats a hate crime if Ive ever seen one
It's also a hate crime to show Cruel Summer and not something from Midnights or 1989 TV.
10:03 as a huge mused I totally see where you’re coming from, I could totally see Matt Bellamy (lead singer) singing warriors
I would like to hear 10 back vs. now live performances!
YES! Love this idea! Even better if it happens to feature the artist singing the same song, though in this case it might be better to either wait until we get more new performances this year, or do 2013 vs. 2023.
lmao joel roasted drake & j cole almost equally as hard as kendrick did
Maybe Joel ghost wrote Kendrick's verse on Like That
Fact of the day: Joel and Rhianna only share a one year age gap
Wonder how much Lil Pitchy would've changed throughout the X years 🤔
5:38 its acutally a hindu deiti called kali that her makeup is based on . She practiced hinduism for like 4-6 year . Look it up .
I was so confused on what to feel when I saw the video bcoz it was my first time seeing this particular video. Not sure how I feel about using Hindu gods being used in MVs like that. I do know that she learnt a classical dance form called bharatnatyam when she was a kid tho so maybe that's influenced her to practice Hinduism
@@blairwrelos1891 I'm Hindu and I don't have any problem with it . Most hindus are very liberal with their religion . Like , homosexuality is allowed in hinduism and there are even some atheist hindus .
Me starting this video: Wait, why is he playing songs from 2014? I thought these were supposed to be a decade old....oh shit
The guitar part in the Calvin Harris song sounds like "Don't Stop" by ATB. Luv me some Calvin Harris!
I think selfish by JT sounds a lot like jealous by Nick Jonas, I think it's because of fairly similar words in the chorus.
I think samples if done right can be really fun. Like remaking a song from scratch. Or taking the lyric out but changing the tone. It's a nice way to see some old music shine again and be renewed. It only works though if you change it a bit or rework the entire thing enough so it doesn't turn it into a cover labelled as a new song to cash in money. I'm referring to for example Spotify singles. Some singles are beautiful covers of songs that are maybe sung in a different genre. Most likely acoustic. But heck yea the Day 'n' Night Spotify single by coldplay was awesome. It was so good my mom didn't even recognize them and she doesn't like coldplay that much. Also I follow a playlist I'm assuming is one of those catered to your profile called something like EDM samplings. I love it so much. Expecially when the artists are creative enough as always. Where they don't plop a piece from another song unedited and call it new. One example could be The Bender by Matoma and Brando. They kept the melody of September by Earth and Fire (if that's the band's name) but made it a completely different genre and rewrote most of the lyrics. Or Perfect by Lucas and Steve, Haris. It took my mom a second to guess they worked the melody around the opening of A-ha's Take on me. Or Dare Me by Nervo, Plastik Funk and Tim Morrison. They pretty much stuck to the reef of another famous song I don't remember the author of, but made it an entirely different thing. They didn't just take a melody as is from the original song and call it new. Nor did they not do any work around it to make it feel new.
I don't really know about the rest but Sia has been a huge mainstay in Australian music for a long time. Her current stuff sounds a lot like her older stuff - I think she was glad she blew up the way she did but, she never seemed to really adapt to the world she was forced to become part of. She never used to hide her face, etc.
I think she's happier making less mainstream a little more funkier music.
I love Sia. I agree with you Joel. New song isn’t my favorite but she’s awesome. Last thing she did I loved was LSD. Labrinth, SIA, and Diplo.
Hmm… why do I feel that Roomie may have missed reviewing an artist also known as Lil Pitchy? There’s been quite an evolution there too….
Joel, I’ve been thinking the same thing about Justin Timberlake's Selfish it sounds like Nick’s song. I might be wrong but my mind feels validated.
Can you take a look at the artist NF please???? 🙏
When you said you prefer 2014 songs to today's songs, I remembered what my cousins said when I was with them in their home country of the Bahamas for this New Years. We were playing Just Dance 2018 and they said that Just Dance 2014 was better.
Children of the Sky does sound very Imagine Dragon-ish. Their last album Mercury had a few tracks that were a little different and more rock influenced (like Dull Knives with the screaming), probably because of its producer who worked with bands like SOAD and RHCP before. They got a new album coming out soon, the samples sound less like rock again.
My brain: "20 years ago, oh yes 2004"
Me realizing my brain is 10 years off -_- Oh no...
The second it said Farrell Willam’s I knew Joel would hate it’s😂
Where can I find original video without his head floating around?
It’s “Stand By Me” 😅 YOU are so right. It feels like songs in “big pop” can be so meh. One thing you might bring up is that the producers they used back then were diff. Maybe edgier?
Joel should make more videos reacting to the top 10 songs on Spotify
That Justin Timberlake song sounds like Hilarious by Charlie Puth.
9:56 as a League player, this song bring me back 10 y.ago for sureee
Pharrell Williams produced many hit songs over the decade
Has to pause the video to listen to your song and wow it’s literally soooooooo good I love it
PLEASE react to NewJeans songs they’re so good
Yeah Charlie always on the edge. Check out the Heavy Duty producers she’s used for a bit. And Dylan from 100 Gecs is brilliant and a great guy. Super unpretentious for someone so successful ❤
The "selfish" song was pretty much "jealous" by Nick Jonas just worded a little different and nowhere near as good. 😅
A lot of this was worse now. I'm also not a huge fan of a lot of newer music so maybe it's just that I'm old. I've joined the "music just ain't what it used to be" crowd 😅😂
I think the song you were thinking about was "jealous" by nick jonas. I thought the same thing. its a very similar vibe to justin's "selfish"
Ok so with pop artists like Beyoncé and Oliver Tree doing “country” albums, idk I feel like it’s not quite country. Cowboy Tears had songs with country style elements, but it was digitally produced and the songs were arranged like edm. Country flavored, but idk about calling it country
The “Ho Hey” is The Lumineers😭😭
Keep it Savage Joel. I respect music knowledge tell it like it is!
Edm artists nowadays have given up good example is david guetta his old songs were amazing now his recent songs have been the same drum beat with a simple bassline and maybe some leads
Jason Derulo just put out a new album last month. What does he mean ex-artist?
One could say that Muse is a muse for Imagine Dragons~
Yeah, the stand by me thing, as a part time song making hobbyist, I find it really hard to "invent" new sounds, that's why I relate a lot to that one line from 21 pilots song stressed out
Isn't 'Cruel Summer' by another artist?
It would be cool if you make a video like this but for rock bands or artists in general
With the generation we're in now, I think it's safe to say that Cruel Summer feels like the token Taylor Swift song nowadays. And I can see why since this song (while overplayed as hell) is still a great track!
It’s even more impressive since Cruel Summer didn’t get much promo. There wasn’t even a music video for it.
