This Fall 1980 tour is my absolute favorite era of Frank, and almost singlehandedly because of Vinnie. The power and technicality he adds is just unmatched!
Yup, in many ways I like his playing from this period more than anything else he did. He got better as he got older, but he had such fire and snap here, as well as unbelievable creativity, which was maybe partly due to a bandleader who knew how to bring it out of him. Context is everything. If he never did Zappa's band, who knows what kind of a player he might have ended up being.
@@NickHolum During the Vai's audition, Colaiuta was a drummer of Frank Zappa. Not only during audition. Have look at Tinsel Town Rebellion album for example.

We need full concert on Blu-ray really bad
Not just this performance. It also needs to be on some streaming platforms.
WHERE IS THE REST OF THIS CONCERT THIS IS THE GEM OF ALL TIME ... Vai was in the band in 1980 ??? When was Warren in the band 79 I'm guessing.
Cuccarillo was only in the band for '79 then he left with Bozzio and O'Hearn to form Missing Persons with Bozzio's girlfriend Dale.
