- Video games are part of everyday life for people all over the world. In the media, games are often criticized as being addictive, promoting violence and simply being a waste of time. But what if games could be used for positive, important learning?
Research finds that games teach us a wide variety of skills and have the potential to be effective educational tools. Despite this, educational video games are often shallow, lacking in gameplay and storyline, and most importantly - they are no fun to play! So why are educational video games so boring? What do we need to change to get it right? In this episode, we answer the question, is time spent on gaming just wasted time or is there a place for video games within education?

I really enjoyed this video- especially as a gamer, married to a gamer and raising 5 kids who enjoy gaming :D My children have learned a lot of skills through gaming- problem solving is a big one but also creativity, physics, engineering, diplomacy and social skills etc etc. Plus these days having a great working knowledge of technology is very useful.
There is another issue with gamification compared to ludification beyond the fact that extrinsic rewards tend to be weaker. This issue is that providing extrinsic rewards for something that the person was previously internally motivated to do can actually reduce or eliminate that initial internal motivation. This means that kids who love writing, maths, etc. simply because they enjoy the activity can actually lose some of that drive because of things like leaderboards.
A great point to consider. I guess this highlights the fact that education is often specific to the individual and that great teachers are able to navigate the many ways people learn.

Good video. It would be really cool for you guys to expand on this topic, video essay analysis of games is fairly popular now with individual titles getting alot of attention. But in terms of the academic side to learning in video games, we don't see as much. Getting professional analysis of the mechanisms that allow for compelling experiences that challenge players would be great!

Commercial games are designed for appeal and enterainment. Educational "games" are disguised class exercises to trick children who like games to try harder.
I find that balancing free time and work time is very valuable, but a difficult skill to acquire. Perhaps trying to make boring, important classes seem fun is slightly harmful in that it teaches children that everything can be fun and exciting? I don't know.
