TAIL STRIKE! PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION BELOW 👇

- Last Sunday we witnessed a Go-Around from a British Airways A350. Nothing special, but at the time it seemed ‘odd’ due to how far down the runway the aircraft climbed-out. I assumed it was a Touch and Go, but why?
What was even more odd, was the craziness that ensued: multiple aircraft on approach to 27L were told to Go-Around. The Southern Runway was also closed for a short while whilst the runway was inspected. We had mixed reports coming-in, but it became evident, from people giving reports from the emergency services at Heathrow, that BA104 had indeed had a tail strike. Later news and pictures confirmed this.
So, what is a tail strike and how serious can it be for the aircraft?
A tail strike is a very rare occurrence, we’ve seen a few near-miss situations like the one here at the front-end of the video. But in general, it’s very rare these days to see it happen. Most modern aircraft are fitted with a sensor and/or even an extended ‘skid’. If the sensor comes into contact with the runway, the onboard systems will notify the pilot(s) of it happening. Tail strikes can occur during landing or takeoff. In this instance, weather it was due to the windy conditions or just simple human error, we will never know. I’m not sure if a tail strike, especially one (like this) which was a ‘brush’ with the runway and not a ‘hard hit’, would result in a touch and go as was the case here. It could be that the aircraft was slightly off-track or maybe even too far down the runway, which would certainly result in a Touch and Go.
The skin of a conventional aircraft is aluminium, so a tail strike on a conventional aircraft can result in buckling of the skin, which would mean replacement panelling and time in maintenance. The bulkhead assembly would also be inspected for possible damage. This all depends on the severity of the strike.
In the case of the Airbus A350, this is a Carbon Composite material and is therefore, although still subjected to the same rigorous checks, potentially be less critical. Although a HARD hit would likely result in more structural damage The case here was literally like ‘skimming’ the surface and, after a full check, G--XWBC is returning to service this week.

0:31 damn that slo-mo is smooth
Ikr
Was a lucky catch there!
The real scary part of all this is that...the passenger most likely never had a clue! I'm sure the captain said something along the lines of a little too much traffic, so we gotta go around!😕
Jumbo jets are kinda beautiful, it’s amazing that you can get such a massive thing into the air. They’re amazing flying machines.
I’m so excited for the 777x
thats not a "jumbo jet"
I watched it live on BJTV, and I was struggling to figure out wtf was going on. Thanks for the explanation, Jerry.
BJ-tv? Lol.

2:11 Concorde!
The ONLY show I've not had on all day in months and I missed it all... watched it back in the evening with my friend Jack Daniels
Saw a photo of the damage afterwards. Didn’t look too bad as you say but I hope any chances for long term damage have been mitigated. We all don’t want another China Airlines type crash in 20 years time as a result of poor maintenance. But I’m sure they will have done a good job 👍
@yoshi TEM good point 👍
I Hope not to, hopefully the regulations brought jn after the crashes of China and Japan Airlines aircraft will stop anyhjtng happening similiar in future
That must have been one of the most expensive tail section scratch repair jobs
@@garrisonbrumblay9137 yeah
Thankfully a relatively simple repair, two areas of damage just forward of the the Aft Toilet service panel.
The toilet service door panel and door took the brunt of the damage and thankfully being made of titanium is was what saved any further damage.
Extensive NDT had been carried out to ensure no further damage to surrounding areas including damage from "Alpha Casings" white hot sparks caused by the titanium which can cause microscopic pit holes and weaken structure.
She's all good and flying again 👍🏻
I saw it live. What an interesting time figuring out what the problem was..
The titanium toilet waste service door saved the tail of that aircraft. It got ground down pretty good 👍🏻
Ended up with a 2 ply carbon layup repair, new toilet service door and housing.
Rumour has it there were a pair of foxes on the runway, pilot saw it last minute and aborted 5ft from the ground.
That was a crazy half hour . Some papers blamed it on foxy who was out for a walk at the time
Wow, happened to be driving past Heathrow at the time and saw multiple fire engines and emergency vehicles but thought it was just a training excersise😂
Fresh doughnuts had just been delivered
Ryanair called, they want their pilots back
Moses called, he wants his joke back.
Does anyone else suspect that BA has forgotten to include the lesson on 'flaring for landing' in the A350 type rating course????
The flair wasn’t really the issue. It looks like they came in slightly too slow and the decent rate was too quick causing the bounce
@@wjohn914 definitely seems like you aren't a pilot , coz then you'll know If you're coming slow your rate of decent will be slower.... Faster your speed faster your ROD.
This
It's just the 'FLARE' screw up here in most cases....
Probably a newly converted Nigel - the A350 is a completely different beast to land than any of the other Airbus' in BA's fleet. It's it the first time an A350's had a rough landing, and it won't be the last
People love butter smooth landings. Not me, I like firm/hard landings because I love seeing the physics in action.
Although the captain is required to report a hard landing, as the U/C has to be checked for damage.
Same😊
A close shave from the ba 350 😲
😄 A literal close shave.
Great video. Always love seeing the “Melania” eyeliner cockpits too!
Wicked wind turbulence at the great heathrow. Great commentary sir. Make it that much more exciting, Thank you.
As Alan Partridge would say... "And another!!"
Is that a Concorde at 2:10/2:11 parked on the tarmac?
Yes
I'm on the go around path, I remember hearing a bunch of planes flying over us
When I heard the voice I was like oh this is the guy I used to watch every morning as a kid.
I have seen this occur one time with a 747 but with how small this plane is I'm shocked it happened. I hope that plane is thoroughly checked for damage.
An A350 is no small plane.
A350 is a big plane
The Daily Fail doesn't even realise that a bird strike and a tail strike are two completely different things!
not surprised !
Experienced tail strike at Aktion International Airport. Aircraft rotated but didn't leave ground. Felt like someone yanked column back to get it to fly, it pitched and bumped tail, then lifted off. Sounded like were inside a large steel dustbin being banged on runway. Think it was a 757.
My only theory was weather bad when aircraft arrived, so might have been captain flying. Leaving could be copilot flying, rotated too soon, so wouldn't leave ground. Perhaps calculations wrong..
Weight and balance calc off? 😬
2:10 oh I see you, you gorgeous bird 😍
Thanks 👏 😊 for the clarification 👍 of what just occurred.
When are you going to go to raf lakenheath again
Just such good content and commentary 👏👏
Wow. Very cool captures
I’m sure that’s a Fox running through the grass behind the BA A319 at 0:57!
Nice! I was watching my relatives' house for a week over Christmas, and a LARGE fox sauntered in front of the front fence, driving the dogs wild. Apparently he hangs out there all the time. But yeah, that was definitely a fox, or a coyote - I dunno if you guys have those over in Ol' Blighty
This video has all the atmosphere of a heightened football match!
No coyotes in the UK! Unless one escaped from a zoo or something
I love how excited you are.. makes me feel good about my job.
The video, description etc are still confusing. I would edit it to show the event aircraft first, and the close call second.
What’s up with that Concorde chilling back there? 02:11
It’s on display due to the heritage of Concorde and Heathrow. This is Concorde G-BOAB.
Holy cow yea
was a crazy day Sunday, joined in shortly before the madness begun and took my whole day lol
0:10 omg..😱
What fantstic footage mate, keep up the great work.
This is why planes need wheels on the back for no tail strikes
Impressionnant !!!
Touch and go but after touch down, touch and go enabled?
If you look closely when it landed the flaps weren't down.
They was waking everybody up. We here!!
G-XWBC I flew on from Vancouver to London with a trainee pilot did a landing like that on that same runway no problems it was just coming in very fast
It seems that your video has gone viral.
That's a great catch!
Wooo lucky there ✈️😊
Was a great show Jerry thanks again
Great catch ❤✈👍
Was that approach a little low on speed?
bro, I must tell you, it's really discouraging to join up in a live chat and see that nobody can talk.
Just get some decent moderators and leave the "members only" option alone.
Anyway, thanks for the work you do out there. Just miss being able to chill.
Cya.
Chat on our domestic shows is a perk of Economy Membership, it has nothing to do with moderation. We've had it like that since 2019 heatshield. It's 99p/99c per month. :)
@@BigJetTV Yeah I get it. It's okay. I just miss being able to talk with everyone like before.
Thanks for the response. I'll keep watching anyway.
Cya!
@@BigJetTV
p.s. I mentioned mods because most people use the "members only" chat option to keep massive amounts of trolls and spammers out. That's all.
Peace. 😎
Woooowwww!
i was so well close thats for sure when will you next be live gerry
You get curl-over on 27L because of the large BA cargo building
Here jerry can we find out if this is a problem with a350
This 350 will need some maintenance 😂...
I don't think composites like abrasion
Ryanair pilot joined bristhis airways
Ryanair landing
Plot twist: but it was British Airways
Is it just me or did anyone notice the Concorde at Heathrow? You don't see that everyday!
You do if you live or work near there
Carbon fibre it weak through its sheer, I'd double check that plane
Oh man, the airplane I fly has a little tail strike guard on the back. I hope I never hear steel on pavement 😂!
2:27
Damn
You have referred to this as a "Touch and Go" in the description but a "touch and go" is usually a planned manoeuvre used by student pilots, what you have in your video is more accurately described as a rejected landing (essentially an un planned touch and go) they are not the same . Also Go arounds are initiated before the flare after the flare it becomes a rejected landing
Is that the actual Concorde @2:09?
I was at work and saw this aircraft surrounded
The ATC had to put their seatbelts on as well when it all kicked off!
What a BRITARDED mess !!
I thought it said bird strike so I was looking for a bird
crazy stuff at Heathrow.
Does the BBC get your permission before using your footage?
Seeing the Concorde on the ramp was a bit surprising...
Would that be a write off and a sacking ?
No, and no.
Unlikely and more like a meeting with the Chief Pilot... without tea and biscuits...
We saw it LIVE with Bigjet TV
Hope BA get a refund from the pilot for all that sim and type training 🤣
Omg that was soooo close.crazy pilot😎
I'm really confused. Was the clip at the start not the tail strike mentioned in the title?????
No, that was a previous heavy landing we caught which looked a bit of a close call. The tail strike was not in view on the southern runway from our position, only the aircraft going around, then we get her landing on 27R as they closed 27L for a while.
BALLS to the wall - Ten SUE

Etihad is my favourite airline
I saw it live :D
Was a crazy 5 minutes or so at the time.
Nah, it didn't look like that 350 had a tail trike at all. It was was just a classic hard, bounced landing. Sink rate was way too high.
Should've added power quickly and attempted to shallow the descent by a lot on that one.
Some of these heavy jets pilots are slow to react and understand that every landing in one of these whales, you need to be spot on on your speed and in sync / tune with what the airplane is doing under you especially with poor weather conditions and low level windshear advisories in effect.
In my flying career, since 1998, I've had so many experiences with airplanes sinking rapidly over a sudden change of wind speed and direction very close to the ground and that happens a lot actually, so you've got to instinctively and quickly add power to increase lift and arrest such descent to avoid exactly that type of outcome.
Fortunately, nothing more serious happened there.
Good job overall from the airport authorities.
You've got to inspect the runway in search for any type of FOD for the entire length of the runway. And that's probably why the runway was closed all the other airplanes were going around. But the dates are different so I'm confused about this upload... Looks like the actual tail strike that took place on that rainy day was not recorded by our aviation enthusiast lad... 🤣
Cheers!
Tldr?
Did you see the nationals took screenshot from Big Jet TV, and blamed it on the fox on walkabout. Glad we had the voices of reasons Gilly and Jerry and the big jet TV 👪 family.
😂😂😂 Wow go-arounds I did not know that they are so interesting when I did them.
Foxy lady takes the fall again. Bit dodgy to blame anyone else but two folk in front seat aye! Like insurance claim form: The tree jumped out into the road.
you’re in czech news
Oof!
It Looks like my a321 landing in xplane
Poor a350
Poor landing gear

I’m not going to read the description
Are you as big as your big tv van
We do not care.
I have a simmelar video of a NATO E-3A on my channel.
Wow they really slam those A350s into the runway over there at British Airways.
Can anyone explain the concorde in the background? Lol 2:10
its j sitting there lol basically its just parked there no one is allowed to visit it.
It’s on display due to the heritage of Concorde and Heathrow. This is Concorde G-BOAB.
Would be better without the commentary
That was not a tail strike
The BA A350 did suffer a tail strike, not the 'close call' one at the beginning, the on that went around on the southern runway. It then landed on the northern runway. It suffered a tail strike when initiating the go-around.
They are going to fire him. She was coming fart or what ???
Ow but first
