You gotta love 80’s anime. Not afraid to show anyone of violence and gore and the occasional nude shots. Violence Jack is not for me though, way too much gore and violence for me. 😨

Matheus Caiaffa Id suggest starting with the manga. The 90s anime is good but removes a very important event that has an important impact on Guts as a character and as a result one of his character traits that he had early on in the story makes little sense.
After the manga you might wanna check out the 90s anime and the movie trilogy. They both adapt the Golden Age arc of the manga and has their own strenghts and weaknesses. Also check out the Dreamcast and Japanese only PS2 games. Skip the new CGI anime, its not only ugly looking but also has bad direction and sound design and cuts out a lot of important parts from the arcs it adapts.

    • @Turboviikinki
      @Turboviikinki 6 лет назад +2

There is no reason not to read the manga first. Watching the 90's anime series will just leave you angry and confused because it ends in a massive cliffhanger and nothing is resolved. Also the production is honestly pretty bad and most of the fights are barely animated. Read the manga first and see how Berserk really looks and feels like, then go to the 90's anime and discover what you would've missed if you watched it first.

Sullytofu I know Bayonetta is normally top of the list for crossovers with Devil May Cry but I'd also love to see Dante team up with Akira. With the Neo Devilman manga I can remember seeing a story where Ryo looked a hell of alot like Dante from DMC3, bare chested with a biker jacket, armed with a sawed off shotgun and pistol that could have been easily either Ebony or Ivory

oh yea and I doubt taking to social media and retweeting #demons WE HAVE AWOKEN is going to cut it here. Truly a fate worse than debt was the ending of DmC when the brothers destroyed the Hellgate and killed Mundas merging the human and demon worlds together.

Those two OVAs blew my mind as a kid. They were how I got into Devilman.
Not sure if I agree that all of the expanded material isn't worthwhile, but I'm a big fan of Grimoire and I really liked Amon due to my love of having my media emotionally traumatize me. Plus if you're a Cyborg 009 fan as well the crossover ova is a lot of fan service I do agree that the original manga, despite being a bit short, is the best of the bunch and the two OVAs are absolutely amazing.
Really hoping the Netflix series turns out great, especially with the talent and resources behind it.

Just finished watching the new Netflix series Devilman Crybaby. Got the first volume of Devilman Grimoire on order too. Of course, the first place I ever saw anything related to Devilman was back in 2006 at a Rob Zombie concert.
They played footage from Devilman The Birth and The Demon Bird on the big screen above the stage while the band played the song Super Charger Heaven of which Devilman is flat out name-dropped in the chorus. I was thirteen years old that night.

There are so many similarities between 1960s Batman and 1972 Devilman TV series.
They were both toned down just to fit onto TV at the time.
But they did have interest enough to allow them to be given adaptations in the late 1980s that was more true to their original comics/manga.

I really need to get into Violence Jack manga. The only gripe I have with the Devilman manga is that it can be bit too short and would help if they establish more of the lore and world building, and I'd definitely like if they established the war between demons and devilmen more.
Also I wouldn't mind if they showcase more of the conflict between Devilman and Satan since that happened off-screen. I love the Devilman manga and the two OVA's still hold up to this day animation wise.
And I like some of the creative liberties the animation studio took. Especially regarding Devilman's mother which adds more powerful weight to the main character over the manga. I just love the set-pieces and striking sceneries and the animation is just superb for something that came out in the 80's.
I used to like Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman for being completely messed up when I was in high school, but gotta be totally honest, the animation doesn't hold up as well as previous OVA's and I believe people like it mostly for extreme violence and gore and not much for the story.
It's hard to recommend that OVA if you aren't familiarized with the source material because you're going to be completely lost with the events happening on screen.
But still, the story is weak, there's not enough of character development, the animation feels dated, there's little character interaction between Akira and two characters Ryo and Miki, side characters are weak so there's no room left to care much about them and the OVA's extremely violent just for the sake of looking edgy and messed up but with little to no substance.
The interaction between Akira and Ryo and Miki is more fleshed out in the manga and the first two OVA's and Amon OVA just wants you to accept that Akira cares about Miki without any knowledge of their previous interactions.
That's why I don't recommend as the first approach to anyone who wants to jump into the series. And Akira feels like a completely different character from the manga and the first two OVA's.
In Amon, he's basically a level-headed, strong and silent type, completely avoid of his personality but in the manga and the first two OVA's when he turns to Devilman, he becomes headstrong, cocky, snarky and bit perverse.
It has some cool moments though. I prefer the look of Amon more than in manga since he's supposed to be the complete opposite of Devilman but shares the similar design and he's voiced by the legendary Akio Ohtsuka so that's neat. His design just works for me. The manga version of Amon looks bit too edgy and over the top for my liking.
I haven't yet seen the new Devilman series, heard some good things about it, but honestly, I'm not a big fan of the art-style.
I understand Masaaki Yuasa has a wide reputation, but I don't think that kind of art-style fits to the source material and I'm starting to believe that the animation isn't going to hold up that well further in the future.
I much prefer the very detailed, well animated, art-style of the first two OVA's with very good lighting effects and color contrast. But I'm still going to check out the Netflix anime just in case.

I would argue that the dubs of the OVAs make for excellent comedies.

Man I now want to watch the ova and read the manga after crybaby. I didn't expect this to be that good. I'm pleasantly surprised. I can't get enough of this.

Of course the OVA looks good, it was done by Ghibli's outsourcing division.
Also, I would recommend the third thing the director of those OVAs made, CB Chara Go Nagai World. Yes it's a completely silly, light-hearted story, but it has all the seiyuu from the OVAs, has the same animation team, composer and director so it looks and sounds good, and quite frankly the director nailed how the Devilman/Mazinger/Violence Jack characters would naturally act in such a ridiculous situation. Also, the cutest Sirene.

I actually watched Crybaby first and I found myself really enjoying it. I hear the ending is not as good as the mangas, but I liked the melancholic feel of it. The show really surprised me in the first half with some of its tenacious themes, especially the sexual overtones, and I really appreciated how it tackled those really uncomfortable dark thoughts that even the best of people can have from time to time. I really loved the animation and music too. Now im really curious to check out the manga and see how that compares

A pretty good spin off I expect alot of people would enjoy would be the Amon manga that expands on the history of the demons and has some really interesting and grotesque art aswell.

I just watched your video after watching crybaby. I've been a devilman fan for the past 10 years actually coming from enjoying ironically from the original 70s cartoon for 2 years using it as a joke and curious about the origin and fell in love. I do love the English OVA only ironically after watching in Japanese. The devilman spin offs are sort of a guilty pleasure to me cause I find them so dumb at times I can't help but love how dumb they actually are. Reason why I say all this is because it's honestly rare for me to find someone (who actually speaks english) really passionate about the franchise yet understand how much bullshit holding the series back. After watching crybaby enjoying it but having problems while my buddy dugged it so hard never watching devilman before hand. It's really got me into thinking how restraint artistic freedom really is with limitations from censordship pushed a show like crybaby from happening for so long, and how the ova could only be out on VHS. Nobody even fucking bothers reading a fucking 5 volume novel that took me only a few hours to read. I dunno if you see the same thing but it just really goes to show how amazing he did to push the standards of entertainment as a hole but it feels less and less people are interested of salvaging what was the original for something updated but may lose the original experience consuming entertainment we may view is oddly wrong for what ever reason. Ah well, I think I ramble a bit to much having a surreal thought process after watching a love letter youtube video. Keep up the good work!

I really liked the OVA´s, but I also liked the other devilman animations, it has an excellent design, and I love Akira as a character to not see it in action, because there are different interpretations for different tastes.

Devilman lady, both the anime and manga, are worth experiencing Despite the manga's blatant lack of an ending(but if you know anything about go nagai you'd get use to it), though I'm more partial to the anime as it was more like the original manga.
