PTA imho created the closest thing to perfection in film-making in drama in the 2000’s (There will be Blood), then again in the 2010’s (The Master). For the 2020’s he has more than earned the right to go in any direction, and I hope that a film this accessible-appearing will introduce a new crop of film fans to these AND his other great films.
You can see one in fast times at ridgemont high if memory serves me correctly. the store damone talks to the Deborah harry stand up at is a licorice pizza.
I can see PTA coming for his first Oscar for Screenplay. It would be great to see him finally win one. As for Director, I think he’ll get nominated but might face competition with Denis Villenueve (who I think could win), Guillermo Del Toro and Jane Campion. I also think this film could get Bradley Cooper his overdue Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and I still think he might get double noms with this and Nightmare Alley.
At this point, eight total nominations in, it would be a slap in the face to deny PTA the best director award as his first Oscar. I get that his writing is the thing which always get nominated and he's only been nominated as director twice... but he's regarded by many as the Kubrick of his generation. I'd love to see him get his first Oscar, but I will feel disappointed if it's for screenplay. IMHO, he should've gotten his first directing Oscar for Phantom Thread. He was never going to win for There Will Be Blood because the Coens were just sweeping everywhere.
@@martincurran4985 I have a feeling this could be his year he finally gets an Oscar. I hope he could be the front runner for Screenplay. If he doesn’t win, I’ll be shocked. As for Director, he did go up against competition. Him for There Will Be Blood and the Coens for No Country for Old Men were like apples and oranges to me both excellently directed films. 10 years later up against Guillermo Del Toro who I thought did an amazing job with The Shape of Water and personally I wanted Nolan to win for Dunkirk.
Was del Toro really overdue though? Pan's Labyrinth is great and so are a bunch of his other movies, but he never struck me as a director overdue an Oscar. Tbh, I thought every other director in his category the year he won deserved it more for different reasons.
@@martincurran4985 Really? That's shocking to me. Its pretty much a consensus that he deserved director so I'm surprised you thought EVERY one deserved it more.
@@jacobboe7711 Well, I did. That's just my opinion. I wasn't that enamored with The Shape of Water. I liked a lot of it, but I didn't love it the way I loved the other four nominees. I think a lot of people would sigh at the notion of Greta Gerwig winning Best Director for Lady Bird, but that film actually really moved me. I thought the way she handled the emotions of the peripheral characters, and only gave us small glimpses or hints at how they felt or what was going on with them is what really made that movie special and it's something I've noticed a lot of people just outright ignore when they talk about the film. The focus might have been on Lady Bird, but it's the way Gerwig creates that community around her of such different and varied individuals who seem to have much more intriguing things going on that we never get to see that made that film feels so melancholic and sincere. I thought it was actually masterful the way she directed that movie.
@@martincurran4985 I dont disagree with what you said, but I think that has more to do with how she wrote the film than how she directed it. Visually, I didnt think it was that special. I can appreciate her directing for the performances she got from the cast and the way she incorporated classic cinematic techniques with mumblecore cinema style, but not much else. Good, Oscar-nomination-worthy direction but not Oscar-worthy direction.
The very limited appearance of Bradley Cooper in this trailer and his placement in the cast credits towards the bottom without a “with” or “and” makes me wonder if his role will even be big enough for a nomination
@@HelloThere-cv8ob “with” and “and” are usually roles taken by bigger actors in supporting roles, and generally signifies more screen time than just a normal 5th placement
Is there any word on if Alana/HAIM will be contributing any music to the film? They’re one of the critically acclaimed bands making music currently and I feel like they could have a huge shot at original song.
Thinking 6 noms at the moment: Picture, Director, Supporting Actor (Cooper), Original Screenplay, Editing and Original Song (Thinking it'll win Picture and Screenplay). Cooper has quite a bit of screentime in this trailer, especially compared to Penn, Waits and Safdie, so I'm assuming even if he isn't in the movie for that long, he's going to have a very important role (maybe it's like Mahershala in Moonlight, where he's only in one part of the film). I also wouldn't count out Alana Haim either. Looks like she's doing a lot performance wise
I'm getting Best Picture winner vibes from this tbh. PGA + WGA. And after such a depressing couple of years, a feel good warm movie could really touch people's hearts the way Ted Lasso did in the TV department this year and swept the Emmys. Nomadland failed to cheer us up last year, maybe this is the movie. Right place at right time.
I’ll be interested to see if/when Licorice Pizza gets some Call Me By Your Name style backlash. Cooper Hoffman is 18 playing 15, while Alana Haim is going on 30. Granted, I think she’s playing a lot younger but I still got the impression that she was a couple of years older than Hoffman’s character. Even if the characters’ ages are closer in the film, the actors’ actual ages will probably put a few people off (especially since the girl is older which is less socially accepted than the other way around for some reason) and I could see the media spinning up a story.
I don't think it'll be up for picture just through the new faces I'm really looking forward to it but it'll probably only get technical nominations just by the look of it.
It feels like a rather weak field so far this can easily move its way up. Given it’s new actors the spotlight can be on PTA. Director nom I can see but win i need more time to think it over
Not sure what everyone is seeing in this trailer? It looks like a very generic “coming of age” film that A24 has a dozen of. I’m sure it will be quality because of PTA but I feel like this will win zero oscars
I loved the trailer and from what I’ve seen from PTA in lmk excited to see it but the title is very cringe to me might be the dumbest title I’ve ever seen I hope it makes sense after I see it
I thought the trailer looked actually very boring. I was so looking forward to Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie. But I won’t even be watching this. Ever. The trailer did nothing for me.
@@heekamalokilo7194 yes. I also didn’t care for Phantom Thread. So boring as well. I liked all his other movies. I did like the trailer for Phantom though. Maybe if the reviews are amazing but I think this will be his lowest rated movie yet.

I felt that same way when you guys mentioned pretty much all of PTA's films. It looks more like Boogie Nights and Punch-Drunk Love though
Sean Penn looks absolutely unstoppable from that trailer. I’m putting him in Top 5 Supporting.
Yeah he totally can get in. I think Safdie has a chance too. But I’m still betting on Cooper to get that nom.

you could argue that del toro had an overdue factor that helped propel the shape of water and that wasn’t that long ago
But that's just it. "You COULD argue". But it's not undeniable by any means. Not like The Departed which was obvious.

I'm definitely going to see it not just because they filmed the school scenes across the street from my house
I would love nothing more for Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman to get noms, but I have very little faith the academy will accept them as debut actors.
