Buddha’s birthday is celebrated annually in the spring season here in Korea. Numerous festivals are held, involving traditional Korean games, group meditation and prayer as well as displays of hundreds and thousands of lanterns. This year, we were lucky enough to witness not only one, but two lantern festivals in Korea. The first at Samgwang temple in Busan, where lanterns line the streets leading up to the main compound as well as being strung all over the structure itself. The second in Daegu, where thousands of floating lanterns were released up into the night sky over Duryu Park by people eager to both pay their respects to Buddha and make a wish upon their floating light.
