Agreed with all of your comments. Here's a good tip for everyone... if you like old physical media, buy just 1 good-priced-game at a used store, and play the heck out of it. Don't collect the entire NES /Wii/ GameCube library, etc.... Those are the people ruining the retro gaming industry.... the full library collectors. (And they never play all of those games. They just sit on them, and half-smile at their wasted purchases.)
I completely agree, the full set thing is stupid, i have a fairly large collection of systems and games (500+) but i do actually play most of the titles from time to time or know that one day i will want to re-play one of them because i really like the game. I am almost done with my wants list and from there on it will just be new releases and random pick ups in shops. Whats the point in owning 3000 games but only really being fan of/ and or interested in playing about 20 percent of them ? Some of the Retro RUclipsr's have a lot to blame for the full set collecting and crazy prices !
I would rather show off a small collection to a close friend and get super nerdy about why I love each game so much instead of having a huge collection to show off to strangers for clout, like you said. The latter sounds so boring to me lol. If you really want to play on original hardware, buying Japanese imports can help save a lot of money, but it only works for games with no or very little text/dialogue, unless you speak Japanese of course which would be awesome lol.
Agreed. I used to get 1 game for birthday and 1 for xmas on the GameCube. And the few games I got were all bangers and I spent countless hours on them.
I had many everdrive carts up until 3 years ago. I had to sell all the systems and everdrives I had to make money to move. Everdrives hold their value quite nicely. In each case, I got all my money back that I spent on each everdrive I bought. 🙂
I feel you. I have stopped collecting years ago for the most part. From time to time I do find some good deals. I have been focusing on flash carts and FGPA systems and emulations to play and have even sold off some games as I can play it with a flash cart if I ever want to play it again. Homebrews on retro consoles and retro collections on modern consoles as a focus as well.
Same here. I've held on to each of the consoles I've bought retail since the 80,s and as a result have a modest collection. The inflated cost of retro games lead me down the FPGA console and Krikzz Everdrive path. Picked up both of Analogues Mega Sg and Super Nt FPGA systmes on release as well as the Retro USB Avs. The Mega Everdrive Pro is amazing and compatable with the Mega Cd too! So yeh,it's FPGA all the way from here on in.
I agree the games have gotten out of control because they have become a commodity to advertise, sell, and brag about. Huge collections also take up a HUGE amount of space. Imagine if you had 500 games...would you every play through these games...how may are literally sitting on the shelf as trophies? Out of every 100 games, there might be 20 worth playing and out of those 20 games, you don't have time in a year to play them...they'd be on a 4 year cycle :)
Awesome video! I have to be honest though. I just bought an original NES a few months ago and I got it because I wanted to reconnect with that moment when I was a kid playing on a Summer Sunday morning in the 80's. You don't get the same feeling on a retro pie as when you plug in a cartridge and turn on the console. You're right these games prices are insane and I wish they would come down.👍👍Thanks!
This is the point many people miss when suggesting we should just play the rom for free, or use an emulation machine. With today's prices these are legitimate options one should definitely consider, as it's better than nothing, but it will never be quite the same... because our memories of enjoying these games as kids is more than just about the game. The game is a big part of it, but it's also about the tactile experience of holding that cartridge, seeing the cover art, sticking the game in, blowing on it to get it to work.. and the magical feeling of when it finally turns on. It's all a part of the experience and the memories, and cannot be emulated.
Pretty much everything horror related always goes up by high values eventually. I feel like the horror genre is the least collected whenever it is released but they all more or less gain a cult following and as they dwindle the value increases higher than most other stuff.
I’ve probably spent close to 7k within the last two years buying retro stuff. I’ve fallen victim to nostalgia and ze market lol But tbh when the boys come through and we pop in Mario kart 64 or MvC2 on the Dreamcast etc etc…it all feels worth it. Lots of great points made in this video. I do hope the market pops being a collector but I also think if chasing the thrill of owning a rare game makes you happy…do it. Another day is not promised. Collect within reason🤙🏼
Thank you for your take on this! I feel the same. I used to have almost every system Nintendo and Sega made and a quite a few games for them, but then life got in the way and now I play on emulators. I do have the Genesis mini modded and loaded with additional Genesis games. The only physical cartridges I have are for my Atari 8Bit computer, along with a few disc based games for it. Even then I use emulators to play those. They mean something to me because they were mine when I was younger. Pure nostalgia. I wouldn't feel that way about other retro games, even if they were affordable.
As someone who does collect retro games, I appreciate people like you! The more people that go this route, the less demand there will be for these old games. I definitely agree with a lot of the statements you made here. I really wish I would have started collecting 10 or 15 years ago when the prices were super cheap, but alas, after I went to college and my mom decided to throw away almost all of my childhood collection I decided I just wouldn't collect anymore. Now though, as a single adult man with nothing better to spend my money on, 25 bucks for a copy of Mario 3 doesn't really seem that bad to me. Sure, some games are crazy expensive to the point of being unattainable, but honestly paying 30 or 40 bucks for something that has a lot of nostalgia value to me beats buying a brand new Switch game for $50 most of the time.
Ya part of me wishes I never sold off my older games for Gameboy advance, GameCube, & Wii, but I had my time with them and moved on to other games on newer systems now.
@@b4rs629 I feel ya man. I fortunately still have most of my original copies from those systems. Wii hasn't gotten too crazy yet but GBA and especially Gamecube are pretty insane. If you are looking to collect for a Nintendo system right now, Wii U is where it's at. It may not have a huge library of games but there are some good ones and most of them are very cheap at the moment.
@@riversart2030 ya I never had any interest in the Wii u since it came out. The Wii u never had any games that made me want to buy it. I mainly buying Xbox 1, switch, ds, & 3ds titles atm.
I appreciate your common sense perspective. When I first got back into Atari, I started buying a few games just for display. (My original collection had not been rediscovered in my parents house at the time, and I was living a good distance away) Since then I have only bought a few games I felt I missed out on back in the day. I have ordered a few homebrew cartridges. But I am not going to go overboard on spending money on them either.
I agree with you on how its not worth it to pay crazy prices. I've found a few cheap games here and there. Fortunately, I have a solid collection and have more than enough to play. But even now, 360, ps3 and PS4 games are dirt cheap. So I focus on that. And as inflation starts to hit people harder, they'll stop buying retro games. They may even start selling them at better prices. I expect prices to slowly start to dip over the next couple years
Ya I've sold off my Gameboy advance, GameCube, & wii collection to pay for my switch & 3ds titles. I recently started dabbling into Xbox and might join in on the PS3.
I'm a collector like you. I haven't bought anything In a while because of prices. Just the occasional homebrew. I've gone from being a collector to just having a collection
Played a lot of the heavy hitters back in their day. I now emulate or buy recently released collections of retro games. I still own my copies of Suikoden 1, 2 and Xenogears on PS1 but emulate them if I ever wish to play them. Can't wait for the Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters coming out soon. Definitely going to pick them up. But yeah, mainly emulation for me. Retroarch is just too amazing.
I started collecting retro games back when it wasn't really a thing yet, around 2007 I believe. At that time, most people thought retro games like NES SNES Genesis were just old and lame but not me haha. I remember my first retro collecting purchase was a Sega Genesis model 1 with 5 games, two controllers and all hookups for 20 bucks from an old man on craigslist. At the time, I didn't even think of it as an awesome deal, that was just a normal expected price to me. I wanted to re live my childhood and that was it. Retro game flipping wasn't in mind and if it did cross my mind, I would've thought who the heck is going to pay high prices for this stuff. Unfortunately I screwed up about 3 to 4 months into collecting when I stopped because of distractions with other things in my life. I really wish I had kept on collecting the games I loved as a kid because the prices now are laughable. I recently saw a 2001 game boy advance sticker going for almost 50 bucks on ebay, a STICKER. We need to go after whoever is responsible for this madness with torches and pitchforks 😂
I am cheap too. I bought a powkiddy v90 and put all the work into updating the firmware and downloaded all the ROMs. Now I have all of the games that would take up a full house that fits in my pocket. 🤯
My NES Everdrive is one of the most important purchases of my adult life in some way. I got my NES in 1985 and when we bought our house, it was in the boxes of stuff my parents kept. Now I get to have my revenge on games that beat me as a kid, and I have the patience to draw a map and really enjoy games like Goonies II and Mighty Bomb Jack. Great video!
I feel ya, I am rebuilding a collection that my dad threw away! With the way the market is now there’s no way that I will be able to get all of those things back I got back 75% of everything and I’m reaching the $5000 mark! Ouch, thanks dad.
My go to for retro gaming is RetroArch, I love it. I spend almost as much time fiddling with screen filters and core options (overlocking, etc.) as I do playing games. Plus having things like save states, rewind, fast forward, etc. make the games more fun for me. Of course having a library of games at my disposal is awesome as well.
What an excellent video. We see so many people who obsess over real hardware (and good for them) but it's nice to see someone acknowledge the prices and that things are going a little wacky and that there are other options to play. I'm glad you included WATA in your video and it's really trickling down. There's another RUclips I like (Emceemur) who is always checking out flea markets and he finds some good stuff occasionally (though it's more the Wii, PS3 generations) but more and more people show up trying to sell junk for more than what they'd get on eBay.
I hear you on this. I got back into Gameboy recently and I really love playing on the official hardware, but it's SO hard to justify paying $40-$80 for some games. There are games that ppl know aren't even that good but because there are fewer copies of them, the price is WAY jacked up. It seems that they find an excuse to jack up all of the prices, regardless if the game is actually good or not. Even repro copies of Gameboy games are being sold for too much imo; around $25 CAD and that's if it doesn't include shipping. I am not paying that for a copy!! Luckily, I recently found a pretty easy way to make my own copies, so that's cool. If I *really* love a game I may still want a physical official copy, but at least I have a way now to just play them or even test a game out before deciding if I like it or not. I don't understand why people want to collect every game. Never been my thing.
Ya I don't understand why people would want to collect every game ever, but then again I'm not made out of money. I sold off my Gameboy games before the prices shot up in 2020. I kind of regret it.
@@b4rs629 Oof, they are super expensive these days, eh? I heard that a huge contributor to the prices being so inflated in the last few years was due to some evil investors artificially manipulating the retro gaming market. They're called WATA Games and it's a whole big scandal ... they are going to court for it now. I hope the prices will go down one day, I really hope so. I hope you can find games to keep playing games, even if you don't own an authentic copy.
Agreed on all accounts, my friend! I still consider myself a casual gamer, and I definitely won't 'buy-in' to over inflated prices for games that never piqued my interest the first time around to necessitate buying them today for the sake of completion. As for the market itself coming back down... sure it will. Just give it some time.
@@GregsGameRoom Indeed it has, though the idea of some clueless schmuck overpaying for an NES stinker at best, gets me laughing maniacally for hours on end! 🤡
yeah that's pretty much me nowadays. The prices have gotten to a point where you actually have to stop and think about wanting to add it to your collection and when you do that you realize that some of these expensive games aren't worth having. With the proliferation of emulation options like flashcarts, ODEs, MiSTer, and Software emulation, there's really no need to have physical games outside of the nostalgic drive. Personally I have sold off some bloat and it feels good to have the space back in my room and use that money towards other things that I'll use, like a new editing PC.
Exactly! And when people who were nostalgic for these game die, then these games will end up in landfills. Honestly I’m hoping for that because retro game collecting is retarded when emulation exists
I used to collect PS1 and PS2 games back in 2017 and I was complaining about the prices then, I had no clue how bad it would get after covid lol. Luckily I can I just play anything I don't own on DuckStation now, PS1 (and PS2 to a certain extent) emulation has come a long way in just a few short years.
I game exclusively on my Series X these days. I grew up with an NES and I have purchased most of those games through collections as you mentioned. I have a life outside of gaming and I would rather spend my money on real life. Thanks for the video.
I'm more of a player than a collector, I have about a hundred carts, and honestly I got tired of fighting with my old hardware. My NES broke down years ago, so got a new clone system, them my controller failed. Game batteries started to fail too. Kept having to clean my carts over and over. Bah. Finally I set up an old computer as an emulation machine, bought some hyperkin controllers, and I'm happy. BONUS: I discovered translations and romhacks, as well as ROM releases from new homebrews. These are things I would have never gotten into with original hardware only.
Agree , every point you said . For the last 15 years, i've been using NES /SNES /GAME BOY emulators . Fit perfectly my retro need . I sold my SNES and NES 10 years ago with a couple of games and never looked back . Im not a collector . My NIntendo memories are in my head , i don't need a original box or cartridge to remind me of the fun i had as a kid playing Zelda , Metroid , Startropics , Mega man etc.. . I still play NES everyday on my retropie and i'm perfectly happy . And your so right that the retro market has gone to a non-sense in the last 10-15 years . 20 years ago , you could find many games for less than 1 $ and the demand was none for NES , now it's getting crazy with WATA grade and everything . Frankly , when people start giving value to cartridge , weither they are 3 screws or 5 screws , you can see that the retro games collector market has gone to a non-sense . And now with bootleg and counterfeit copy , you don't even know if your buying a legit as the counterfeit market are flooding ebay , amazon etc.. . Games are meant to be played , not look at . Buying sealed copy to put on a shelf and doing nothing with it , thats nonsense .
It's not just the money, I simply don't have the space. Also, if you hold on to a game you bought for 150, instead of selling for 50, you're short 150, instead of 100, and it adds up.
Yes I have a collection of games for various machines throughout the gaming genre. Yet I also have a few preloaded Chinese clone everdrives, (Sega master system, N-64 & SNES) these allow me to play the games without costing a small fortune
I started collecting the NDS/3DS family of consoles, and decided that i wamted to reclaim a lot of the games that i really enjoyed in the past. The mainline Pokemon games being my forst targets, and holy crap did i learn real quick what has become of the market. I think its honestly just a combination of a lot of different factors over the past 5 years that have contributed to the bubble that the market is in right now. Covid, Wata Games, Logan Paul, and Nintendo closing down the e-Shop for 3DS/WiiU all made a big impact on the market, imo. Plus there are a lot of people like me that are just recently getting into collecting and are used to seeing these high prices now. They may not know what these games used to go for, and should be going for, so they just bite bullet thinking this is just how it's always been. Like you though, i dont have any faith that the bubble will be popping anytime soon, if ever. Not in a significant capacity at least. Maybe one day prices will start to drop a bit, but im not holdijg my breath. These games that sold millions of copies and are now selling for absurdly high prices (looking at you US version of Pokemon Emerald) are still not rare yet. Emerald sold over 8 million copies, amd it is by no means rare at all. I see multiple copies posted to auction sites every single day. Not even exaggerating. They are literally everywhere, yet they're selling like something that sold less ghan half a million copies. It's game prices like these that make you realize that these games are only worth what you value them at. If Emerald is worth that much to you, then spend your money how you wish. If you know that $150 for a game that sold 8 million copies is nothing short of absurd, then try to wait and see if you can somehow find it for a better price. The market bubble won't go anywhere until the consumers do something about it by not buying these games st these prices.
I've narrowed my quest down to just sega cd. Been slowly collecting for it for 8 years now. For my other consoles,I have anywhere from 10-50 games each that I picked up in lots, thrift stores, etc. so I'm good with those collections as they are. But yeah, it's just gotten crazy. At this point I can really only buy 1-2 sega cd games a year since they're almost all over $100 now. My most expensive were Snatcher, Potful Mail, and Fatal Fury Special which were all in the $500-$600 range which is insane lol. I basically just reserve the high end titles for Christmas or birthday gifts from my wife. I figure I'd rather have a cool vintage collectible than jewelry, cologne, etc. Anyways, awesome Jag CD collection! I've always had a thing for those early cd-rom consoles & add-ons.
I've been emulating since 486 I gave it up like bad habit I hate setting all that crap every time, softmoding orginal hardware is much better experience & it works when I have family over universal controler Fs up all the time.
A lot of people might say that paying over S20 for a copy of Contra is "no big deal" but it really is when as a collector of these games you are aware of the prices they were going for 10 years ago and it's absurd to contribute to the price scalping and reselling taking advantage of a sellers market with naive consumers. I stopped buying NES games around 2004 because I figured there wasn't a good reason to own all these physical copies with storage space limitations when I could just emulate. I will wait out the nostalgia wave.
I bought 3K worth of stuff from 2011-2017ish. Th me covid bubble and retro RUclipsr wave happened, I just sold my collection piece by piece for $25k. Now I play everything on a modded 3DS. And I’ll wait for the bubble to pop and scoop up my favorites for pennies
Me personally I don’t really like collecting just to have something. To me I just like having the games I know I’m going to play over and over again. Recently I’ve been trying to obtain all 6 Mega Man games for the NES and for a few of them like the first and fifth game they just are so near impossible to get for someone like me. I entered the collecting scene around 2017-2018 too so it’s even harder now then how it was back then which really sucks. I do enjoy trying out games via emulation but for people getting in who are younger it’s just so bad right now and there really is no worse feeling then hearing about how someone can just pick up a box full of NES games and console at a yard sale for like 10 bucks in 2006 because unfortunately that’s just not really going to happen anymore. It doesn’t feel like a neat hobby as much anymore but rather like a big fad.
I only collect games that I want because I want to play them. Wether it’s a game that I grew up playing or one that’s recommended that looks like I’ll enjoy it I’ll probably get it. But to collect every game for every system is just insane to me, and yes the pricing is getting way out of hand. When I see a loose copy of Super Mario Bros for the NES going for $40-50 I just roll my eyes, it ain’t worth that much. I’m just so glad I bought most of my games 20 years ago when the prices weren’t overinflated.
Quite often, the urge to buy retro games is the result of a deep seated psychological sense of lack of void. Find out what is - or should be - the primary focus in your life 🙏
game prices will never come down, because the reason you stated and also, they have been put on the "antiquers" radar, and antiques don't come down in price, and so games won't either now
Having a dream you can no longer achieve is truly heartbreaking. I've collected Videogames for over 38 years. I didn't have a dream of owning them all, that's impossible for me. But what I can. My family has fallen into a bit of money issues and are using MY life savings for the worst spending I can't even begin to understand. Even though 1k is nothing in the market, it is in certain emergency situations. Once it's completely gone in...What, a month's time? This will be all to my name left, which I will likely be forced to sell. It took me over 26 years to get just 600+ games, and that's all my console collections combined, and I'm losing ALL of it this year because of them!
Nice video. Yea. I got all the NES games I wanted. No fillers or nothing I know I won't play. I finished my collection maybe almost 10 years ago. I'm good. Got overdrives for N64 and NES along with multiCart and everything. I'm good
it IS astronomical. Im from 1984 and now wanted to start collecting again. Forget it! It's absurd these days. And then to think that i use to HAVE all these consoles and games. Back then sold at flea markets to upgrade to the next console. I have hundreds of NES and SNES games. If only i knew this beforehand...i could have retired lol
BASED!!! You said it all, man. Shelves of collections are just a flex. We caught a guy drop his shelves on Discord video, and it just empty printed boxes. That’s how bad it is. RUclipsrs reviewers started the market with this bullshit. I used to go to pawn shops and get games for 5 bucks. Years later, I went to a local store owned by a guy I knew. He let his wife run a Video/Gaming store as he was running his sports collectible place as he did for years. I bought a few overpriced retro things, and brought in something not even a year old. And the bitch got onto a computer matching prices right in front of me. I told her, "You cannot do that, you can't be a thrift friendly if you act like a GameStop." He told her not to run it like a baseball card place. She wouldn't listen. Store shut down in 6 months.
Game prices are ridiculous, I remember picking up nes games in the mid 90s at funkoland for a dollar or two I remember getting chiller for a 1.00 gargoyles quest for 2.00 DuckTales 2 for 3.00 you can't even find games at auctions or thrift stores because of these resellers , got to blame the internet now everyone knows what everything is worth they want exactly what it's priced at online as much as we love these games we just need to make the decision to not pay these prices and the prices will go down until then there going to keep going up loved the video and got to admit the mini systems are great I got the NES classic I modded it and the games play great and you can save Woop woop
I really don’t care about these game collections or stuff. I’m fine with my 2DS, Switch, Wii, and Gamecube. I only have two games on my 2DS, 4 games on my Wii, 10 games on my Switch, and Animal Crossing for the Gamecube. It’s really stupid these resellers think they can exploit gamers for games for green. I just want TTYD, and I’m happy that we have remakes now.
This is exactly what I've been saying. Only because it has the nintendo logo doesn't mean it's a "classic" or something "Rare". They want to sell you nintendo 3ds consoles with higher prices than the nintendo switch console. Or even the nintendo DS. They sold like a freaking trillion mario kart wii, and they ask for 60 bucks, wtf?
100% nailed it. And I think there will be a demographics cliff in the future that will burst the bubble. The inception point will be A(buyers, 20’s-40’s nostalgia is the digital era) - B(sellers, reaching the don’t care need healthcare money). Boom zero market.
I was big into collecting for conosles I want/own since the 2000s, stopped in about 2015, prices got nuts and i only collect games I actually want to play (and a few troll games). It’s no longer fun and you never find ‘hidden gems’ anyone since people can sell online. Glad I collected when I did, all the used game stores where I live have died and I got nearly everything I wanted (still want the burger king games for OG xbox, would take the 360 versions as well)
I'm too much of a perfectionist. All my games are mint and look like they just came out of the package. All the way back to C64 and Atari. So few people actually take care of their stuff and everything retro gaming wise for sale is either dirty, scuffed, scratched, faded, food dried on it, greasy hands touched it for years, cracked, chipped, or some combination of those things. Zero temptation I'll take my Everdrives. More games for you all.
Well sir you are an actual gamer who like to play all the games in his collection to completion. Nowadays the majority of gamers just collect the plastic to get dusty on their shelves nobody cares about actually playing their games. And if they do so they just spend 10 minutes before the got their verdict "naahh this is not for me" or "this is not a good game".Of course along came the "experts" with their suits that care only about money capitalizing our nostalgia and convinced everyone that their retro games worth thousands of money. Many youtubers are responsible for that as well.
I'm happy with my collection. Me and my bro got quite lucky in that we started about 15 years ago. We set out to replace our snes, nes, mega drive, saturn, dreamcast and master system collections from our child hood and we have done that. Now we just hunt randomly for good deals, which can still be had. But we play the collection now more than obsessing over finding new ones to add to the collection.
Im very much in the same boat. Im more of a retro console collector. I like to play on original hardware so im going down the route of buying the consoles i want but i dont collect games i play on everdrives/ODE's. Price being the main factor followed closely by space
I recently started looking for the Nintendo NES classic edition that came out in 2016, but am finding that they are expensive and there are a lot of knock offs out there. Any advice?
I got lucky and found an authentic NES classic mini at a vintage toy store for $70 that works perfect. One of the advantages of getting it at a store like that was I was able to examine it and test it before buying.
I often view this as a teen with minimal funds. My recommendation? Don't bother, period. Buy current new. Hell if you're just starting out, buy digital on sale. Get a Switch if you enjoy Nintendo's games, Playstation if you enjoy Japanese games, and Xbox if you enjoy Western developed games(FPS ect.) You cannot go wrong with any current platform, more games than you could ever play. I remember dropping $25 on the DKC games in the early 2000s. Now you can have that and more for $20 a year, along with deep regular discounts on popular games. Stay current, don't bother with stuff you don't remember :p
i dont actually mind paying 20-50 bucks for some cool retro games, or near 80 for some insanely good games that i want to play (twilight princess) but i gotta agree, some of these common games are way too expensive.
I don't consider myself a collector but maybe a hoarder. I have never sold a game and as a get older and have more disposable income, I buy more games than I can play but I only buy games I want to play. Luckily after the NES classic was sold out I learned about the Raspberry Pi and later on the everdrives. So I don't buy retro games unless its for a modern console like the konami collections on Switch. The ease of playing on my switch or PS4 is worth the same price of the collections. I would like to get a copy of the GBC and GBA Zelda games just to collect though since I have all the others.
For the most part, collecting used carts is not that expensive. You can get a loose NES Contra for $35, the equivalent of $14 1988 dollars. What I’m saying is that most (certainly not all) loose carts are cheaper to buy now than when they came out. I’ve sold at conventions for 10+ years, and if you allow for inflation, I’ve sold countless boxed NES games for way less than what they cost when they were released-even in recent years. And yes, people sometimes spent big bucks on my rarer NES boxed games. But you know what? The stuff has subsequently doubled or tripled in value.
I enjoy the Commodore 64 for nostalgia and interest in the machine. I buy job lots of games if I can, keep the ones I want and will play or have nostalgic interest then sell the rest to fund my hobby. I won’t just buy everything because you’re right it’s too expensive and why would you want a wall of games you don’t play just to look nice! Pointless. Great video.
I have been collecting since 2014 and I feel I just was too late to start a collection. Almost no cheap supply on flea markets and too many resellers with overpriced stuff. But, the past few years I notice less and less resellers. This summer, by surprise I found 5 NES games for a grand total of 1.50 Euro at a flea market around 10 AM. About flash carts and emulators. Even if I have the original Legend of Zelda carts for NES, I still prefer to play it on the NES classic mini because you can save at any moment. And for Game Boy games, I have a backlit modified Game Boy DMG, but I will still use emulators because of the convenience of saving a game at any moment. About "collecting", I'm starting to ask myself why I bought some of the games, even at a low price. Some are too bad to play, and if they are not displayed, why keep them.
If the game company's would re-release the cartridges, that we could deflate the market. Perhaps they have many issues legally with the licensing, but not all games would be a problem...
Ditto, I’m not that interested in the actual game cartridges but if a steak came along I might. The real console and controllers do mean something to me over emulation as you said.
I'm 43, played on pretty much every console/computer from the ZX, to the Amiga500 right the way through the crazy 90's........all the way till now. I tell ya....... you Retro gaming lovers and collectors are off your f#####g heads lol. Retro gaming is s##t!!!! The memories of old games is seen through rose tinted glasses. There isn't one game iv'e played older than the PS3/360 era.... That isn't absolutely crap. The graphics, movement, fluidity..... everything utterly sucks. So the fact so many are paying crazy prices for consoles that were out in the 80's and 90's is insane! I wish Retro collectors would be honest. They all say they collect for them, and only them and want to preserve old gaming. If that were true, then why is it that every Retro collector makes their room look as nice as they can and have EVERYTHING on show? Why? Because they collect too show off, that's it...... They collect to show off to their pals, show off on here hundreds of games, hundreds of consoles, 90% of which they never use..... But own simply too show off. It is nuts! And it is because of people like this, which is why Reteo gaming and it's anal, up their own arse attitude and prices have got so ridiculously out of control. I wouldn't give you 50p for most NES games, and here are these nutters paying hundreds of pounds.
I bought a snes and a genesis a couple years ago and I’m kind of feeling guilty of not playing them for a while and buying them years ago. It’s difficult to buy games for those consoles and I also want to play modern games too. There are some games that I don’t want to waste my money buying like earthbound for example. I think I should invest in an ever drive or just get an adaptor for my controller to work on my computer
Kinda will get worse. because old games get damaged, destroyed, lost, people dont want to sell etc. and one guy got 100 copies at one point is selling them for 200$. So it will get worse.
Some of the prices are just hysteric nonsense. Any retro gamer, who buys old games with the intent of actually playing them (like I do), will never fork over that kind of money. Unfortunately, some rare games are now gate-keeped away, courtesy of scalpers and speculators, who optimistically backstab each other, until they run out of greater fools. Meanwhile, most retro gamers will just fire up an emulator, if they want to play Rule of Rose. They will NOT pay hundreds of euros/dollars. And that is the thing: This overpriced "high-end" market has no organic demand whatsoever. It is complete make-believe.
The advice Not to collect games because of prices is ridiculous. Prices won't Go down. I startet collecting Game Boy Last month. Every Game from childhood plus some more and even many accessories. The everdrive comes ontop. And this month i collect Game Gear. With games, and stuff and flashdrive. All without manuals or boxes, thats the worse thing. But i don't have place for that.

Just buy what you want to play, keep the good stuff and your collection will build itself over time.
That’s it, just don’t overpay.
Yeah but I usually won’t pay over $20 for a classic. Sadly it’s difficult to find Shatterhand under $100. I’m not going to pay that much!
Spot on👍🏻
Absolutely, I collected games I had when I was a child plus games I rented from Blockbuster.
Just buy what you like, that's how I do it.
Homebrews, hacks and protos are a good reason to use flashcarts to play on real hardware!
Yeah, there was a time when I thought I’d love to own physical copies of the games but exactly what you said, they’d just sit on the shelf.
Nice to looking dust collectors... ;-)
And knowing physical copies won’t last forever on longevity
Awesome video! I have to be honest though. I just bought an original NES a few months ago and I got it because I wanted to reconnect with that moment when I was a kid playing on a Summer Sunday morning in the 80's. You don't get the same feeling on a retro pie as when you plug in a cartridge and turn on the console. You're right these games prices are insane and I wish they would come down.👍👍Thanks!
You have a point. There's something special about playing it on real hardware with the real cartridge.
As an anime VHS collector, tapes have gone up in value as well, because all the horror collectors figured out those tapes are less common and niche.
Trading cards, and arts too was way ahead of its time thanks to shady corporates
I’ve fallen victim to nostalgia and ze market lol
But tbh when the boys come through and we pop in Mario kart 64 or MvC2 on the Dreamcast etc etc…it all feels worth it. Lots of great points made in this video. I do hope the market pops being a collector but I also think if chasing the thrill of owning a rare game makes you happy…do it. Another day is not promised. Collect within reason🤙🏼
@@logical_logic don’t get me wrong I got a lot of great deals and “steals”. But some rare stuff…gotta pay the price if you want it lol
Yeah those game cartridges stay close to me. Especially my original 3 Atari 2600 games!
Homebrews I feel are worthy of support. They usually start off reasonably priced.
The collecting bug hit me hard in 2009 when me and a friend were in a collecting competition. Now I'm just trying to play the games I already have.
A lot of collectors without even knowning it. It is shown among RUclipsrs too.
I'm a collector like you. I haven't bought anything In a while because of prices. Just the occasional homebrew. I've gone from being a collector to just having a collection
That’s it. If I see something good, I’ll get it. But not going out of my way to get something overpriced. I can live without it.
That’s a good way to go.
Damn that sucks hard man.
I literally have no time for games. If i get nostalgic a 30 minute skim over some old games with a computer rom with work just fine.
Sometimes I like to see what I missed out on, but collecting just to collect, no.
The thrift stores tend to have really cheap copies of Wii and PS3 etc games also. Older than that though is extremely rare at thrift stores though.
@@b4rs629 I hear that from a lot of ppl, the regret.
Maybe one day u can buy them back.
@@butterflypooo I could, but I can't justify the price $700-900 dollars for gen1-3 Pokemon games.
Those graded games have ruined it for everyone IMO.
@@GregsGameRoom Indeed it has, though the idea of some clueless schmuck overpaying for an NES stinker at best, gets me laughing maniacally for hours on end! 🤡

Wow. In other words, "once in a while you get to rip off some poor old woman, lol"
That's just plain dirty.
yeah that's pretty much me nowadays.
0:58 -- OMG that would drive me CRAZY them putting the price stickers right on top of the game cartridge label!!
Exactly! Retro game collecting is brain rot! Just emulate them at this point! ITS FREE!!!!!!!!! YEAHHHHHHHHHH
I spend no more than $40
Agree , every point you said .
To each their own. There are retro games that I don't own that are part of my childhood, and I want them.
And yeah, it's 100% WATA that's ruining the game collecting scene.
Th me covid bubble and retro RUclipsr wave happened,
I just sold my collection piece by piece for $25k.
Now I play everything on a modded 3DS.
And I’ll wait for the bubble to pop and scoop up my favorites for pennies
You can always browse Retro Gaming of Denver for all your affordable retro game favorites 😊🎮👌🏽
Sadly, Wata almost single-handedly ruined the retro game collecting scene for a lot of people :(
Corporations and long term inflation
I mean if a game I want is cheap I’ll get it, but I wouldn’t do it just to collect.
"so you may have noticed that I dont have a huge game collection" *shows giant wall full of games*
What I have is minuscule compared to most collections.
@@GregsGameRoom lol im just teasing. yeah, theres some monster collections out there. I couldn't see myself with that many games personally.
I collect, but when the price is too high I go for repro. After all " I'M NOT STUPID".
Repro is a whole’nother animal
I don't blame you for not collecting retro games. The prices used to be decent now it's just crazy.
I can't believe you don't want to own a copy of Cheetahmen
Quite often, the urge to buy retro games is the result of a deep seated psychological sense of lack of void. Find out what is - or should be - the primary focus in your life 🙏
game prices will never come down, because the reason you stated and also, they have been put on the "antiquers" radar, and antiques don't come down in price, and so games won't either now
'I don't have a huge collection', proceeds to show off hundreds of games
A common game can still be popular enough that you can sell it for more than what it averages on ebay etc..
Nice video. Yea. I got all the NES games I wanted. No fillers or nothing I know I won't play. I finished my collection maybe almost 10 years ago. I'm good. Got overdrives for N64 and NES along with multiCart and everything. I'm good
I hit it hard from 2014-2017. NES, GC, WII, WII U, 3DS, Lynx.. all was easy.
it IS astronomical.
I told her, "You cannot do that, you can't be a thrift friendly if you act like a GameStop."
He told her not to run it like a baseball card place.
The only time I would break the bank for a video game is if it is title I want for my collection / trophy piece.
"I don't collect games!"
***proceeds to show off an expensive in box game collection***
Clown, honk honk.
My entire video game collection from Atari to PS2 to XBox 360 is all digital.
I recently started looking for the Nintendo NES classic edition that came out in 2016, but am finding that they are expensive and there are a lot of knock offs out there. Any advice?
Yeah those minis are getting hard to find too. Even the Raspberry Pis have gone up in this awful economy.
Get a Switch if you enjoy Nintendo's games, Playstation if you enjoy Japanese games, and Xbox if you enjoy Western developed games(FPS ect.)
You cannot go wrong with any current platform, more games than you could ever play.
I remember dropping $25 on the DKC games in the early 2000s.
Now you can have that and more for $20 a year, along with deep regular discounts on popular games.
Stay current, don't bother with stuff you don't remember :p
even the pawn shops are up on game now they start looking up the price at GameStop and trying to match that
Goodwill too. Prices are crazy.
I'm just saying if you say you don't collect or check these places how can you just assume there's no good deals to be had?
i dont actually mind paying 20-50 bucks for some cool retro games, or near 80 for some insanely good games that i want to play (twilight princess)
but i gotta agree, some of these common games are way too expensive.
I guess I could consider myself a hoarder too.
I'm an everdrive advocate now too!!
more a game turns old and rare, more it turns expensive. but sharing and second hand lost their meaning.
If the game company's would re-release the cartridges, that we could deflate the market. Perhaps they have many issues legally with the licensing, but not all games would be a problem...
I mean you own Fapper on the 2600. What else do you need?
I like to collect but I only buy them if there cheep . I have some of my games from when I was a kid! Still have my copy of super Mario three
Antstream arcade is a good way to scratch that itch for me.
Ditto, I’m not that interested in the actual game cartridges but if a steak came along I might. The real console and controllers do mean something to me over emulation as you said.
Nice video 😊👍.
Nice collection!!!
Too late for me…I’ve already gone out and bought them. Complete in boxes, and yes they are beautiful trophies on my shelf. There.. I’ve said it lol 😆
I can’t get an emulator to work on my Xbox 360 e or my laptop I just wanted to play SNES sim city
I will pay up to retail price. But that’s scary too because gran turismo 2 for ps1 was $50 at Walmart new .
Kinda will get worse. because old games get damaged, destroyed, lost, people dont want to sell etc. and one guy got 100 copies at one point is selling them for 200$. So it will get worse.
i collect the games that i am interested in playing in
Me too, go for everdrives and emulation instead.
The only actually game boxes and cartridges that I have are intellivision and Nintendo DS
