I noticed that just leaving the yard that you had a old QR DH shunting loco and i guess it's getting converted to the 2ft 6 gauge track. Most of the old DH shunting locos have now been converted to pulling sugar cane wagons for various sugar mills in Qld.
The railway also served a vital purpose in preservation and not just a tourist train ride. On the 24th May 2002 there was a major rockfall on the Walhalla road through Stringers Gorge. For ten days whilst the road was under repair the train was Walhalla's lifeline carrying passengers, supplies and the mail. To add a bit of nostalgia to it all a horse and cart met every train to carry supplies and passengers. They operated four return trips daily and that was paid for by Vic Roads. The railway obtained much needed financial gain although it stretched the volunteers to the limit. When the road work was completed and the railways returned to a tourist operation it was a reminder of the value of the railway to this isolated community. When I visited in 2015 the weather was the usual Victorian unpredictable weather as it started off nice and sunny and then later in the afternoon the rain came down in torrents.
This spectacular landscape is a pleasure in my eyes. Blessed be the people who did that line, and those who take care for it, so we can admire its beauty. Thank you.
An amazing view which puts in perspective the blood sweat and tears of the original railway construction workers. Maintaining all that track is a tribute to the WGR volunteers too!
There was gold up there, That created a lot of railways & infrastructure in those days. Magnificent country though & the bush is super thick. Remember Scout Camps up there. but the railway was not working back then .

One of the most interesting little towns I reckon, Walhalla. Completely unrelated to the railway but my personal highlight of the town is that it marks the start of the 700km Australian Alps Walking Track all the way up to Canberra, would love to give it a shot some day. Beautiful part of the world!
Its a lovely spot, i remember motorcycling there 20 years ago or so when they didn't even have power! Pub served "warm" beer because they couldn't runt he generator until after midday (or there about!), i remember visiting the railway when it made it just across the bridge over thew Thompson as well, must have just "opened".
@@dunxy I recall that the train just ran back and forth in Thomson yard at first while the Thomson River bridge was being restored. I also recall there being a run around loop just before (Thomson end) Happy Creek. I arranged to get off the train there (the public were not to get off at the time) and explore further along the line, under restoration. Upon returning, we had to wait quite some time before the last train arrived to pick us up. Sadly, the train was full, so we had to ride in the cab on the way back. 😀

Such a magnificent perseptive view that does this short line un-measurable justice. I'd look forward to a similar front view of PB. It would be a long trip but well worth watching:)
What a great video! The views are magnificent. I was impressed with the engineering of the track; the grade was nice and level through the terrain, so the engine worked but did not labor.
When I first saw the title, I thought of Walhalla South Carolina in the US. Scenery around that area is similar in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This was really cool to see.

That's my objective, to make this channel the home of footage of railways big and small. This railway is well worth travelling on and getting the footage with the beautiful scenery it runs through. 👍😀
When I was 16 the track used to go from the Thompson river towards Walhalla for around 1.5km then stop and the train would reverse back, my father and I got off the train and walked the remnants of the old line back into Walhalla which back then was overgrown with shrubs and ferns, it's amazing to see how far the volunteers have come with restoring the line, and how amazing would it be if one day the line can be restored all the way to Moe! It would be a fantastic trip. Have they got a steam loco on this line yet? I must get back up and check it all out.
It's great to see the work they have accomplished and would be nice to see it go a little further back along the line but I think the best we could hope for would be Erica. It is a big job to achieve something like that and maybe for now the focus is on consolidating what they have and ensuring that it stays healthy into the future for future generations to enjoy. The railway is diesel powered and does not operate a steam locomotive. 👍😊
Travelled on this about 5 years ago, magnificent experience. Are they really working on relaying the track back towards Erica? That would be amazing, even more back to Moe but that would be a pipe dream. Keep them coming.🇦🇺
Going back to Moe would be very hard because there is a large Melbourne water supply dam Blue rock and Moe sewage water treatment plant uses the original raised track bed as the dam wall

@@driver667fortunately, I didn't miss that. I managed to get a ride on one of the test runs. But also bought a ticket for the very last trip.
