    Your observation about small trams lifting against Australia or England: at the time, the West Indians were NOT a small team. They were dominant. They had a production line of talent. Ambrose’s initial reluctance to take up cricket presaged later youngsters who took up basketball or athletics instead. And they went into decline. What if Usain Bolt became a fast bowler instead?

    • @jukeseyable
      @jukeseyable Месяц назад +2

      not a small team, but drawn from a relatively small population, around 6 million, this is nothing compared to the likes of India and england etc, but the number, regularity and standard of the players they produced, is just off the charts, when you can pick 3 of the worlds top 5 pace bowlers in 1 team, this is neve going to end well for the opposition, that team of the 70's were something else

    Dean Jones was playing with a broken thumb and also felt a little vulnerable regarding his spot in the team, so he was looking for any advantage he could get. It was a One-Day International and was played with a white ball that was still pretty clean when Jones came in after the first wicket fell. You could make a case that a big white wrist band would be distracting when a batsman is trying to read the white ball out of the bowler's hand… so Jones's request wasn't outrageous. He was a very fine, aggressive batter not afraid to take a risk, but maybe this is one risk he should have avoided.

    The wrist band controversy was based on the argument that as the bowlers wrist swung into a delivery, its colour distracted the batsman from picking the type of delivery/ grip on the ball
    immediately before the release of the ball.

    White cricket ball and white wrist band. As batsmen like to try and watch the ball in the bowlers hand the wrist band can effect the batting. So he was right ge could have worn a black one instead. That said all it did was fire Curtly up and the batsmen that followed Jonesy were pretty pissed off as he took his anger out on them. He went up a level in response. Never upset Ambrose

    Question you raised on an earlier video about where the bat ends - The bat extends to the batting gloves and typically the gloves have a band at the wrist. So the bat would end where the band of the glove ends. Some batsmen also wear another band above the wrists. If that band touches any part of the glove then it would also count as part of the bat. So there should be a gap between the glove and the other band for it not to be considered as part of the bat

  • @Rassskle
    @Rassskle Месяц назад +3

    White wrist bands are not allowed in white ball cricket and red wrist bands are not allowed in red ball cricket.
    The batsmans ball vision is lost in the matching wrist bands.
    The umpires should never have allowed Ambrose to bowl the white ball wearing white wrist bands.
    That is why they wear white or cream in red ball cricket and coloured pyjamas in white ball cricket......to see the ball.
    Imagine a fast ball from a pitcher wearing all white......now imagine if he is allowed to aim at your head, like in cricket.
    And even school boys can bowl at nearly 90 mph and without sight screens to help the batsman see the ball.

    • @RealFansSports
      @RealFansSports  Месяц назад

      Yeah I could see that as an issue. That is allowed though from my knowledge in baseball. Would have to double check it thought. And yeah college baseball players don’t make it unless they can pitch 90+ and really it’s closer to 95+ at the bigger schools. Obviously it’s harder in cricket but we also have seen bowlers in cricket that struggle to hit the 90mph range.

    • @Rassskle
      @Rassskle Месяц назад

      @@RealFansSports
      Plenty of club bowlers bowl consistantly over 90 Mph + but either not good enough to go professional or they prefer a real job and guaranteed income.
      Indian cricketers now get paid well, but only the Australian Contracted Players get paid as professional sportsman.
      Many professional cricketers travel the world playing all year round mostly for room and board and not much else.
      I believe they get paid well in Hong Kong and don't even have to be any good.
      The rest of the world is not like the USA with billions of dollars to waste on 2nd rate amateurs or keep them at Uni ( college ) , pay them and give them phony degrees every other year to justify their " student" status.

  • @alphacrusis2632
    @alphacrusis2632 Месяц назад

    You are right Zach about the angle of the delivery. The reason why Ambrose was so devastating is because he was around 6 ft 7" tall so at the point of delivery when the ball leaves the hand, Ambrose launches the ball at least ten foot off the ground so the batsman finds it difficult to get a line on the ball due to the angle its coming down at him, and because its coming down between 90 and 100 MPH is almost unplayable. The tall players make the best fast bowlers.

  • @johnfaw
    @johnfaw Месяц назад +1

    West Indies is not a small cricketing nation. While their fortunes may have waned in recent times, they are small only in the size of their population. Matches against England take on additional significance due to the colonial past.

  • @Rassskle
    @Rassskle Месяц назад +1

    With the ball being released from over 9' off the ground, the extra bounce was and still is a big problem.......but the bigger problem is reading the length of the ball.
    A batsman has 4 choices to make as soon as the ball is released or even before then.
    1) If the ball is pitched up you move toward the ball and play off your front foot.
    2) If the ball is short, you play off the back foot.....either transfer all your weight onto the back foot or step back, jump even.
    3) Play the ball from your block position.....no forward or backward movement.
    4) Pre determine to charge the bowler and skip towards the ball ( charge like a madman ).
    If you charge well, you make a normally good length ball into an overpitched ball or even a full toss, but you have less time to actually hit it.
    Get it wrong, or the bowler guesses right, and you can lose all your teeth and be eating slop through a straw for months while waiting for the surgeons to remove all the wiring from your broken jaw. lol
    The taller the bowler, the later the batsman knows whether to go front foot, back foot or stay still.
    The good batsmen move BEFORE they even see the length ( where the ball will pitch ) purely on instinct and experience ( automatic function of sub conscious memory from years of practice ).......but the extra height throws the batsmens radar into melt down.
    Even leg spin bowlers use extra ball height to confuse the batsmans radar.
    Toss the ball high out the back of the hand, but slower so it isn't over pitched.
    The best spin bowlers use the extra ball height and slower pace behind the ball and the extra spin to make the ball drop shorter than the batsman expects.
    Wrist spinners ( leg break ) use top spin to make the ball drop on an even shorter length, then spit off the wicket ( bounce higher and FASTER )......like top spin in tennis.
    If a fast bowler gets top spin on a quick accurate ball.....that is deadly.

    • @UKJesterVids

      the other problem with the ball coming down from 9 feet is if the sight screen isn't tall enough

      So true......unfortunately in Ozz these days sight screens are very rare outside of District Cricket and designated 1st Class grounds.
      Even when playing D Grade for a Sub District club in Melbourne i never saw the Turf 1 team play with a sight screen.
      The fastest ball i ever faced came out of a red tiled roof.......the pitch was an almost white concrete ( dirty light grey ) but i never saw anything.......my eyes searching for it, thinking has he released it, when i felt it hit high on my bat, near the splice. lol
