@@littlewigglemonster7691 ok lol
I’m pretty sure that’s a threat display judging by the way it stands up, arches its back, and outstretches its dewlap at the beginning of the video.
It’s important not to assume animals feel human emotions or express them in the same way. It is most likely threatening to bite rather than “smiling.”
Take this with a grain of salt as I’m not a professional but I know a decent amount about reptiles and have owned two iguanas.
I was wondering the same thing. I've seen the arched back, tiptoes stance when two are about to fight. Plus the owner started closing the door on him at the end of the video, so either the iguana is supposed to stay on the other side or the owner was anticipating aggression.
That being said, the iguana's movements were fairly slow, I would think that it'd be quick and jerky if it were being aggressive - though it's not always obvious if a reptile wants to lash out at something.
100% a threat display, its standing up and puffing out and whipping its tail
I've had an iguana, and the fact that it's acting aggressive, but also moving slowly probably means it's hungry and is irritable because of being hungry.
first: humans are animals
second: non-humans can have human emotions
third: yes each specie display emotions differently
Thank you

When I was a kid my parents would regularly take me down to Costa Rica, where these animals are a common occurrence. While usually regarded as pests they're very docile, you can easily approach them and sometimes they'll approach you if you've fed them before.
People who say only dogs and cats love you back have things to learn.
This looks more like a „If I were bigger you’d be prey“ kinda smile.

@@edwardperez8580 maybe at first (see inflated dewlap and raised body) but when the animal recognizes the human and chooses to approach it seems to lower its body and its dewlap deflates. Aggressive iguanas hiss and bob their heads when they attack. This one doesn’t do that. While an open mouth can be a sign of aggression if accompanied by other tells, it can also be a sign of curiosity or surprise in iguanas specifically. Iguanas explore new things using the Jacobson’s organ, which is in their mouth (that’s why they taste new things with their tongues), and an open mouth can be a simple precipitation of that (not unlike how you might raise or flex your hands if you see something with an interesting texture, wether or not you end up fulfilling your instinctive desire to investigate it). Regardless, I trust the owner of this individual iguana to understand this individual iguana’s social queues better than you or I do.

That iguana is not happy. He is in his mating season and he wants to fight. You can tell because he his really red. Opening the mouth is a threat display
-siiiiiigh- Lizards do not open their mouths because they are happy. This is a threat display. Everything from the open mouth to the arched back and rigid tail is showing that this lizard is about to throw hands. Not "happy". Though, in life he probably is happy, because he is a good weight and his skin is a nice, bright color, so clearly he is well taken care of. But reptiles are not dogs. If you try to approach a lizard that is gaping at you like that, you are going to get Bit, Tail-whipped, or pooped on. Or all three at once.
