  • Classic Game Room HD reviews a competition between two video game console powerhouses, the SEGA DREAMCAST vs. the MAGNAVOX ODYSSEY 2. Which gaming system is the winner, the Sega Dreamcast or the Magnavox Odyssey 2? Watch this detailed review and find out. The Sega Dreamcast is a popular game system that was released in North America in 1999. The Magnavox Odyssey 2 is a classic cartridge based game console released in 1978. In some ways these two game systems could not be more different... in some ways they could not be more alike. The Sega Dreamcast has Sonic, Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur and Chu Chu Rocket. The Magnavox Odyssey 2 has K.C. Munchkin, KC's Krazy Chase, War of Nerves and Invaders from Hyperspace. Each game console costs about $40 today, used, and games are readily available and frequently inexpensive. Sega is well known for the amazing array of arcade titles, machines and game consoles like the Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Megadrive, Game Gear and Sega Saturn. Magnavox is known for.... televisions. Maybe they made boom boxes too, and lots of other stuff. This is an interesting and entertaining look at two video game consoles with short life spans. It didn't have to be that way, and it doesn't. You can buy the Dreamcast, Odyssey 2 and stacks of games for a fraction of the price of a new PS3 or Xbox 360. Classic Game Room loves classic retro systems as much as the new ones, and this competition of Sega Dreamcast vs Magnavox Odyssey 2 is one of our finest examples of how completely insane we are. We've already compared the Atari 2600 versus the Playstation 2 and the Atari 7800 vs. the PS3 and the Xbox 360 vs. the NES... why not this side by side awesome console comparison? CGRHD!

If sega started making consols again they would fail just like last time nintendo was destroyed in sales during the mid late 90's and all the way up till the wii's release....but what happened they still are around, thats how strong nintendos foundation is, it cant be destroyed ever.

I'm surprised the Dreamcast was so short lived, considering there were some great games (Sonic Adventure 2 was awesome!), it had some unique features such as memory cards witch were little handheld video games themselves, superb graphics capabilities for the time, internet connectivity, I could go on and on! The Magnavox Odessy 2 was pretty good for its time too and shares a similar story.

im with you on that! Whats even better is the fact that you can make your dreamcast the ultimate sega/retro machine by getting the Genesis and mastersystem/gamegear emulator discs for it. Also NES, SNES, 2600 and NeoGeo emulators and It becomes the ultimate retro/sega/arcade system!
now if it could only play saturn games.....

Went with my dad & bro to buy a system in the day, couldn't decide between the Atari 2600 or the Odyssey-2. Then we saw the Intellivision display in the store... Blew both of the other systems away in both sound & graphics! Guess what we bought, and never regretted it?
An O2 is incomplete without "The Voice" speech-emulator... A large, clunky piece that slipped over the top/back of it that came with special games. It was fun getting it to swear out-loud while in that high-end department store!

I compltely agree with you. But sadly I think it was these moves that ended up killing Sega in the "console wars". They would jump the gun to create the next great console (which they would be for a short time) giving thier competiters a look of what they needed to do in order to creat a better machine. I love Sega but I think if they would have took thier times creating thier machines they would still be 1 of the top consoles to this vary day.

"... As well as a number of titles that didn't really stand out."
I know you used it as an example, but Blue Stinger was a great 1st gen. Dreamcast game. It's just unfortunate that the U.S. release was runined with the camera changes. The Japanese version uses fixed camera rather than a rear camera like the U.S. release, and it's much more fun to play.
Honestly, some people treat it as a poor RE knockoff, but it's so absurdly funny and campy that it's quite fun to play.

  • @RealCoachMustafa

The point shouldn't go to the Odyssey 2 for having a built-in keyboard, point should go to Dreamcast for that because you can plug in two keyboards and play Typing of The Dead!
Anyways, I love the Dreamcast, probably my favorite console ever. It was too ahead of it's time and had so many new and great ideas that it brought to the market. Too bad that it died so soon. I will have to eventually check out an Odyssey 2... one day.

Actually, they were not commercial disasters. The Odyssey 2 was selling moderately well, probably #3 or #4 best selling-Second generation console at the time! Now the Emerson Arcadia, that's another story...As for the Dreamcast,in it's short life-span,it was very popular in the sixth-gen and current -gen gaming world. The two were pretty successful.

In terms of library Dreamcast definitely wins, but for the time both systems had pretty awesome graphics and sounds. Magnavox Odyssey 2 could have used more action arcade games and ports, and instead focused more on educational games. I'd say just get both of them, I can't imagine anyone regretting it.

SEGA needs to pull an ATARI. Sometime in the 90s, I remember ATARI actually re-releasing it's Atari 2600 and some of the games just before they started releasing the handhelds. I think now if SEGA re-released the Dreamcast, it would sell more. They could market it to us Retrofreaks , as well as selling it at a more affordable price for people that might not want to pay 199 for other consoles.

not necessarily. The internet yes it was the first, but remember that the Intellivision had the PlayCable and the Genesis/Mega Drive had the Sega Channel. They allowed a downloadable game subscription service via co-axial cable. In Japan there was an SNES add-on called Satellaview which was a satellite service for downloadable content.

Dreamcast is way better IMO, even if the Odyssey for the time had some better capabilities than the Atari 2600. Just looking at the Odyssey and stuff, it feels like less of a game console and more of a keyboard that can play games, and the controller doesn't really look appealing at all. While you could say the Dreamcast made it to the market too early to try and beat out the PS1 & N64 which caused it to lose out to its later competitors, it still had a lot of great things going for it. Sleek, attractive looking design and not too big of size, 4 controller ports for local multiplayer (PS2 only had 2 ports), 56k modem input for online play or even browsing the internet (though back then I don't know why you would on a console with a slow 56k modem), great controller that had a D-pad that rivaled Nintendo controller D-pads, good looking alternate console colors like the Sega Sports black, and of course the games. Even though it had a short lifespan, it got quite a few great games for it and the graphics look much better than the early 3D consoles with all kinds of pixelation and polygons which haven't aged well.I can see myself playing Dreamcast games today, but I don't think I could see myself ever shelling out the money or the space in my apartment to keep an Odyssey around. I don't have a 2600 either and it all just comes down to if it's worth getting for the games, and all the consoles I can think of before the NES aren't worth getting cus there are better options out there for games (and very affordable options with PC gaming and sales).

Dreamcast had a great technical possibilities and for now, that techs are not bad at all. I love this console and It's sad that Sega can't get more popularity and gain more money from that console due to Playstation born. Playstation is a great console, but Sega should still doing something with new games for Dreamcast, and not to sold their titles to other platforms. I think that DC VS PS was equal chances to hit the world.

I really question that logic: the fact that the Dreamcast was intially quite successful was its early release. Basically from the day that the PS2 was confirmed as on the way, Dreamcast sales dropped significantly. Once the PS2 came out, third-parties moved to Sony in droves, and Dreamcast sales became little more than a trickle. I think that if the Dreamcast had come out after the PS2 it wouldn't even have had any brief success, epspecially with two other rivals to contend with. Sad but true.

Problems? The Magnavox Odyssey was the first video game console to be released. It predates Pong by 3 years, However it's only games to my knowledge we're Pong, Pong, And Tennis... Which is Pong. Please explain to me how the dream cast is the best console made? There is no way anyone has grown up with it yet, so it doesn't have nostalgia. The one thing it did do is make online play. That is something it will always be remembered for. However that doesn't make it the "BEST CONSULE MADE"

Mark there is a adaptor that plugs into the broadband side of the DC that overrides for Odyssey 2 games. They fit tight but get the job done. I read a article where (Monkeyshines) was played. ( A great title). You need the boot software first but they only made 8 copies in Canada somewhere. I hear some collector bought the last 6 copy's and heard he moved to Alaska. What I read in the forums in '02. The last 2 are out there....

Hoping Sega will make a Dreamcast-addon that plays cartridges.

not quite. although it was the first successful arcade machine (Nolan Bushnell's second attempt and the first under his Atari company), the Odyssey (developed from the Brown Box) was made to cash in on the arcade success, but it had no sound and didnt keep score for you. Pong was released two years later in a console for the home, and was much more popular beacuse it kept score and had its own speaker (among other reasons). The Odyssey predates Pong by two years, but Pong was so much better.
