      You know, not only consols have standarized interfaces... mainboards -> chipset -> soutbridge too... Never had any problem's with it. You write a programm, give the values reasonable space and call the interface that has to work with, all you have to know which interface works the best for the task you wana execute. So whats left is bad programming, thats all. And if you dont think so, i can bring you back in the time of 1994... I/Os, Memory Controler, PCI lines and other stuff where not in the South or Northbridge included... But it was fun to find usefull functions you couldnt gues... today everything has to work just fine, wiht no effort... man people got lazy

    • @tubester358

      I think we have Steam to thank for that actually. The whole 'convenience' argument that consoles had over PCs was overturned by Steam I think, which also makes it easier to respond directly to developers and publishers or at least make a public display. Consoles are where you just pop in a game and play, if it's bad or broken then you just bought a bad product and maybe you can return it or forget it. On Steam many people are trying to actively shape their own market; trying to filter out bad products and help 'build' other products coz in the end everyone including the devs want that game to exist and to play it and play it well.
      Matter of fact Steam's so convenient that it cut piracy down by a whole lot.
      I gotta say PC game devs must be very passionate to deal with all the shit they often get and still make games, lol.

      We have steam sales, we have hundreds of dollars. The last time I played full price for a game, it was for the Nintendo Switch. Why the Switch? It actually has exclusives that I play with my younger cousins. You can get The Witcher 3 for less than $35. Try the platform and do research before making up facts. Oh, they usually pirate big developers like Ubisoft but not indie-game developers because they need the cash more.

Hearing lately from a family member that's been a hardcore Apple user ONLY they are doing it now too and doesn't use Apple which we never thought we'd hear it from him! Sadly he switched to Windows and is going to suffer the same problems he is having with Apple for the things he needs done.

    Solution:
    When developing a game, chose an engine which offers the following -
    Builds to all platforms
    Supports multiple graphical APIs
    Has dynamic input which can be mapped without changing code
    Keep high-poly and high-res versions of your models and textures before scaling for console.
    Problem Solved.

    • @alecmackintosh2734

      +Harrison Glenn almost every game engine used in the industry is pay to use or you have pay a percentage of your revenue to the engine creators.

    • @OllysCoding
      @OllysCoding 7 лет назад +15

      Harrison Glenn They have to use an engine anyway. If companies developed games from "scratch" (even if "scratch" is them using a 3d platform like Vulkan, and a physics engine, etc) games would take twice as long to develop as they currently do.
      If it's an in house engine (developed by the same company who use it) they will have had to hire a team to develop, maintain and optimize it throughout its life cycle, which if you look at salaries in that area, could be upwards 1 million dollars per year for a whole team, The benefit being you get complete control over every feature in the engine.
      If it's a prebuilt engine, they will have to pay a hefty licencing fee, but it comes with the advantage that the company who built the engine are receiving said hefty licencing fee from many companies and therefore can dedicate many more engineers and researchers to keeping the engine up to date, and adding powerful features such as multiplatform compilation.

    • @hirokjyotideka5571
      @hirokjyotideka5571 7 лет назад +19

      Harrison Glenn Nope there are engines that are free as the aforementioned Unreal Engine 4. But developers have to pay 5% loyalty if they earn more than $3000 per quarter by selling games on their engine which is still not bad i guess.

    I'd also add that for games from Japanese AAA developers, there's an extra layer to this - the PC gaming market in Japan is smaller than in the West, and is mostly centered around indie titles from hobbyist developers. Because of this, PC ports of Japanese AAA titles are less common, and when they do happen, they're usually made for games that are aiming for a large worldwide audience or that have a large following in the West. As a result, a lot of Japanese game developers don't have much experience programming for Windows, let alone Mac and Linux (which is also why PC ports of Japanese AAA games tend to be Windows-only).

    Well whilst we're here, here's my picks for modern PC ports that I've had issues with. Note that some can be fixed with mods:
    Dark Souls PC (NOT Remastered) - Native res the same as Xbox 360, unoptimised, incredibly difficult to get 60fps, bad m+k controls
    Halo 2 - Can only be installed 5 times before needing a new CD key, 60+fps breaks the game, mouse acceleration permanently on and input lag
    Saints Row 2 - Requires very high CPU clock speed to maintain a good framerate
    Dark Souls 2 - Most input prompts use the Xbox 360 control scheme and not m+k
    GTA IV - Requires very high CPU clock speed to maintain good framerate
    Batman Arkham Knight - Requires top of the line hardware to maintain 60fps
    Those are a few that come to mind but i'm sure there's been more i've had issues with too.

I'm certain DirectX has nothing to do with XBOX, it stands for "direct access". So software developers can use DirectX to more easily access the variety of hardware available on different PCs.

    There are 6 CPU-GPU combos for gaming PCs: All Intel, All AMD, Intel + AMD, Intel + NVIDIA, AMD + Intel, and AMD + NVIDIA. If that wasn't confusing enough, then look at the different families of CPUs and GPUs. We have from Intel, i3, i5, i7, and i9 for CPUs and ARC. AMD has Ryzen 3, 5, 7, and 9, along with Radeon RX. Finally from NVIDIA, we have GTX (which is dying), and RTX. We must also consider the generations of each family of CPUs and GPUs. As Microsoft is making Windows 11 replace Win 10. the earliest families of CPUs that are fully supported are Intel Core 8th Gen and AMD Zen 2 Processor (Ryzen 3000 for Desktop and Ryzen 4000), though there are experiments for support of some of the Intel Core 7th Gen CPUs and AMD Zen+ procesors which are at least Ryzen 2000 CPUs (so long as they support at least TPM 2.0). Finally, you need one that is compatible with DirectX 12. I reccomend GPUs as early as the Radeon R9 or the GeForce GTX 900 series. No wonder why PC game dev is confusing.

    Let's be clear: 99% of bugs in pc ports (when this video was made) were less "hardware issues" and more "developers couldn't be bothered".
    Back when this was made, main complaints were things like "obvious bugs resulting from sloppy programming", "lack of support for basics like controllers", "stupid bugs introduced by the porting process" and so on. Things you'd know to fix if you played the game for yourself instead of just trying to get it running and pushing it out the door.
    I think this video bends over way too far backwards to let publishers off the hook when - in most cases - they had a choice to release a good pc port and just decided against it.

    If the huge variety of PC hardware was that big an issue anymore, PC gaming in general would still be a disaster. Consoles like the PS4 and Xbone *are* PCs. They're equipped with x86 CPUs and GPUs that from a driver standpoint, are not that different from their PC counterparts. Hell, the 'X' in Xbox historically stood for DirectX, because the platform was designed from the ground up to be easy to program for people used to writing games in Windows' DirectX APIs.
    The biggest porting issues almost always come from former console exclusives. Unlike cross-platform games, these games weren't built with portability in mind from the get-go. By the time these games reach the PC, typically a year or more after their initial release, they've usually been discounted, and aren't pulling in the money they once were. It just doesn't make financial sense to spend a ton of money making them anything more than a half-assed port.

      your first point 100% agree. Any excuses that points out categorical differences between consoles and PCs are jst poor excuses. Between microsoft owning xbox and all it's code and windows itself there is literally ZERO reason i cannot just pop in a xbox game disc into my PC and run it, this is m$ being too lazy to program a truly universal API/ABI
      Re: older games and porting, i think i'd like to extend your argument to also include MODERN games that are MADE exclusive (likely due to a deal or just because it's easier or smthg) and for similar reasons as you have pointed not being ported. The fundamental problem is that word "PORT" any time it is involves its NEVER going to be 100%, the only way all will be equal is if companies develop games for PCs the same way aas consoles and iff microsoft creates a better universal API for games that is truly cross across xbox and windows, again ZERO reason this doesn't exist except for "too lazy"/"needs too much money" or some such. Can you imagine how many people would gravitate toward xbox games/titles and choose xbox if they're looking for a console if xbox and windows was compatible?

    This video was true until 5-6 years ago, but today you will often get the better, more complete version of a game on PC. PC gamers are the the majority not the" vocal minority" as this video is incorrectly stated.
    And before you scream "but Arkham Knight was crappy port!" well so is Prey for PS4.
    It all comes down how a developer has planned on making the game,
    Many Japanese games for example have trouble implementing to PC various game settings like resolutions(Nier: Automata) or Street Fighter 5 not working on windows 8 or 10 because Capcom apparently never heard of them. This is simply because PC is foreign concept to them. That's why they develop for consoles and port to PC
    Good thing most western developers taking advantage of the PC hardware, because they develop for PC and then port to consoles.
    (Except WB of course that give the task to a team of 10 to port on PC)
    Something tells me that Linus isn't exactly up to date with the current gaming scene.

    1: they were the start of our community
    2: they are 8th gen consoles that are powerful for what they are they are capable of staying on for a few weeks
    3: they are not complicated
    4: there is one marketplace for the respective console (Xbox = Xbox store) (PS4 = playstaion store)
    5: games don’t look bad (the pc community can see the difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS and stop bashing that in our heads it’s like torture)

      Horizon zero dawn is a very well optimised game. The developers chose the right development tools for the PS4's hardware. Making the game look a lot better than expected with the available hardware.

    What's up with Linus in that Thumbnail?

  • @gabriel_the_salubri
    @gabriel_the_salubri 7 лет назад +10

    Nope... Not buying it Linus. You explain the circumstances under which games are developed well, but game developers are the ones who tell us that they've done the work to bring an enjoyable experience to our platform of choice. They're the ones who print out and advise us on specifications under which their products "should" run effectively. Development studios are the ones with the resources to determine what kind of products they're going to produce and to whom.
    With all the above in mind, they can cry me a river about the challenges of programming for this or that platform. If it's that much of a challenge, perhaps they should quit trying to create products for certain platforms or at the very least, not pawn off half-baked products to consumers while expecting a premium price in return. They could also show a level of integrity by delaying a game if it's not able to perform as expected, based on the requirements they set. With that said, it's not unreasonable for the consumer to expect a product to perform at a level that is at least equal to the standards set by the developer.
    That games require patches to address certain issues is what we should accept as the price for playing on our platform of choice. We should **not** be expected to accept substandard products (on release) when we pay the asking price and possess systems that are at or above the stated requirements. Likewise, if game developers showed us more integrity than hype, their financial issues would take care of themselves because I think people would be more prepared to wait and to pay full price for items that they can trust to perform regardless of what platform they're playing on. Bottom line (as far as I'm concerned) is console gamers expect games to respond to how they use their controller and PC gamers don't invest in their machines for the sake of having a better console-like experience. Instead of investing in CGI trailers (that don't represent actual gameplay), perhaps game studios should invest more of that money into (Q)uality-and-(A)ssurance and/or paying the people who do the work to make games everything they're supposed to be.

    the problem with this video is that there almost no major examples of horrid ports left in 2020 (with the exception of HZD). i don't know what you're talking about with DS2 and Sonic Adventure DX, as i had no issues with them. Arkham Knight has long been patched, and the original port of Dark Souls has been replaced by the superior remastered version. GTA IV isn't available anymore, Nier:Automata has an extremely easy to install performance mod called "FAR", etc. i could go on, but i think i've made my point.

    watchdogs pc has a notorious backstory of being drastically overhauled to meet the demands of console hardware limitations after being announced for platforms other than pc. when it was shown off years before its release, it used much sharper visuals and was well optimized for pc. additionally, an agenda was pushed when pc graphics were actually downscaled in order to make consoles look better in comparison, thus boosting console sales. the games' original crisp textures and lighting and stuff can still be accessed within the game's code, but is not readily available for people that don't know about them. take this into account, there are many rushed, sucky pc ports, but watchdogs is actually a rare special case. also, fable 1 was rereleased for the anniversary edition with shitty controls that force you into using a controller, after the game's initial release for xbox and pc(under the title 'the lost chapters') was well optimized for both platforms. i don't understand the reason for the discrepancy between versions, but that's what happened. i think a better example would be dark souls 1, unless you have the prepare to die edition, and even then, it's probably best to play it on console.

    • @theguest103
      @theguest103 6 лет назад

      i also want to say that watchdogs is a continuation of the driv3r franchise, but under a different name to avoid any connection with driv3rgate. it was meant to be a big deal, but unfortunately ubisoft was at the wheel...

    • @yulfine1688

      on pc drivers already do that. On nvidia sides the GeForce experience app which basically comes with any driver software you download or is preinstalled optimizes games the best it can. However its the same issue that amd also has with theirs each driver update fine tunes things differently not to mention if a game is more developed around an amd api over nvidia etc or a combination of amd and nvidia or intel, the app optimization can only do so much.

    What most PC gamers don't realise is that most causal gamers would rather buy a console, plug it into the TV and play the shit out of it. Than have to sit down and teach themselves all this technical shit just to play a video game. Consoles just work, they don't require manual configuring or any fixing or driver updates etc. It just plugs and plays and that's what most people who play video games want

  • @edwinleechuanhao

    I see people trying to protect consoles by saying, "YOU CAN'T PLAY WITH FRIENDS ON A PC, YOU CAN'T SIT ON A COUCH AND PLAY ON A PC, I JUST WANNA RELAX AND PLAY, NOTHING ELSE!" That's completely understandable, but!
    You can easily get a mini-itx pc, they're small and portable, I even brought my pc with me when I flew to Australia. A console is basically that but worse. I can carry my pc to where my tv is and plug it in to play games. I can sit on a couch while playing, I can use a controller AND a mouse and keyboard whenever I want to, I can relax with both of them and I can play with friends when they come over or online. Finally, I have a gtx 1060 and an i5 7500 so it will obviously get higher than 60 fps in the games in play in 1920x1080. I don't see a reason to use console over a pc from these reasons.
