- This is the second half of the John Deere 650 Compact tractor repair. Unfortunately there were some files that corrupted and I was not able to include in this video. This is an overview of the in frame rebuild performed on this tractor to get it back operating condition. As always, respectful comments and questions are welcome and thanks for watching!

Nice work there Andy. 👍🏻👍🏻 Good to see the 850 Lawn Mower on Steroids running again. 👍🏻 Take care.
Thanks buddy...proud to say the owner has picked it up and its back to work. Stay tuned, videos on the Farmall H are right around the corner, starting with a mandatory carburetor rebuild
Well, another project down 👍😎
We are so back logged on content…we’ve both been swamped with work but that’s a blessing in itself. Hope you’re doing good Ed!

G'day Andy
Did you do any honing of the cylinder walls before putting the new pistons in? I have a JD 750 that has a large amount of blow by and oil leaking out of the tube and I feel it has a similar issue.
Yes, I honed the cylinders because this wasn’t a sleeved engine. I can’t remember if the 750 is sleeved or not. If it is sleeved that should be a fairly easy remedy to your blow by problem. 👍
Hmm.. in frame on a Deere.. sounds familiar 😂🤣 but you are only doing 1/3 of what we are.. oh, wait... There's only 1/3 of the cylinders..lol
Bingo!
🤣😂
How is the tractor running? Still running good that 33 pounds has me scared and what was the torque for the head do you remember
I don’t remember but yes, it’s still running great!
What did you torque the head down to? I’ve got everything changed and pistons back in but I can’t find torque specs for the head anywhere?
ANDY I did the same projecd but I stay very accelerated the revolutions do not drop. you can help thanks
It sounds like a fueling issue, possibly with the injection pump. It’s hard to say without looking at the machine and seeing what it’s doing.
Hello, I'm a recent new owner of a JD 650. I'm pretty sure my 4wd shift fork is broken, just like the original problem you were asked to fix on this one. Do you happen to have any video on that fix? Mine broke just in time for it to start snowing up here in Michigan. I've turned plenty of wrenches in my day, but I'm new to tractors. Appreciate any advice/guidance you can give. Thanks!!
Unfortunately I don’t have a video on that, as I remember there were some camera difficulties that day. I need to make one because that would be helpful for a lot of folks. However it’s very easy.
1. Drain your transmission/hydraulic fluid
2. Remove the top plate/shifter
3. Drive out the roll pin in the 4wd shifter
4. Push the shaft of the old shift fork into the transmission and remove
5. Examine and remove the remaining broken parts (most likely in the belly of the transmission)
6. Line up and install the new shift fork with new seals
7. Drive the roll pin back into the shift lever and shift fork shaft
8. Replace fluid as well as the top plate (don’t forget a new gasket for the top plate)
@@AmericanTradesmen thanks a million! Made quick work of disassembly this evening. I must say, I expected to see a lot more mechanism inside that casting when I removed the shifter. I really appreciate you taking the time to write the instructions for me. Keep up the good work!
@@mattb6946 I’m glad you made short work of it. Not a bad job, just have to dig in!
I have a 650 and mine must not be like this 1. I didnt see you deal with a tiny metal tube that is bolted on the back of the head twice up against the firewall. Then there is a half inch metal tube in the way.
Hi- thanks for the really great video series. I have a 650 that runs well but is really loud (like a knocking sound) and it has pretty significant blow by. I have done all the service to it. Could it possibly be a timing issue? I have a set of timing shims but am hesitant to mess with it. Appreciate any tips!
When you changed the engine oil how much (if any) metal was in the oil or on the drain plug?
@@AmericanTradesmen Thanks for the reply. I was advised to check that, but I couldn't find a single trace of metal or dust in the oil. I even filtered the oil through a plastic clear container to see it.
@@LukeLBluegrass I can say that the little 650 has a rather noisy engine. Every 2 cyl I e ever heard was a little loud. The blow by concerns me a little though. Could just be worn rings. How many hours are on it?
@@AmericanTradesmen The hour meter doesn't work. It stopped at around 600. It doesn't seem like its a super high hour tractor though judging by the wear on all the other parts. Here's an old video I took of it idling. You can't really see the exhaust and blow by in it though. Appreciate the advice!

@@LukeLBluegrass yours sounds just like mine. Like I say, they’re rather noisy little engines. A good full service and fresh diesel fuel might be the ticket.
Where do you order your JD 650 parts?
I ordered my kit from compacttractorparts.com which is Weavers Compact Tractors. Thanks for the question!
@@AmericanTradesmen Thank you for the response.
