I can’t even imagine how scared you both must have been. My heart ached for you. You don’t owe anyone anything, but I appreciate being able to hear what happened.
Brains are complicated and sometimes just fail us. You’re not the first person in my life to have an experience like this. It’s a lot more common than people know.
Keep taking it easy, friend. We miss you!

I think you're super strong for choosing to talk about this sort of thing, because (of course) it's not easy. It's _very_ personal, and really no one else's business but your own and the people close to you. But on a slightly contradictory point, it's also a good thing to try and contribute to getting rid of the stigma that surrounds mental health in general, like you mentioned. In the end, it's all up to you what you choose to share and what not to. I very much appreciate you making this video and making people feel less alone with issues like these, be it one or several of the things discussed here.
I'm glad to hear you're okay and in a better place mentally now. There'll always be ups and downs, you'll always take a step back or two, but ultimately, it'll be worth it as long as you have the support both medically and personally.

i must be honest, I had a very similar situation. I had what is called Invasive thoughts. Self harming. Involving knives. Mostly like self stabbing. I broke down, it was really scary as it would not go away. I willing went into a mental hospital, and hated it. Not for getting help, that was fine. But it was hell for the fact i could barley get any food that i could eat. Like it was so bland i could not eat the food. Add the fact i had no ability to use my normal copping skills and music... Well it was not fun. But it was worth it. I just needed a med dosage raise it turns out. I even learned the causes of my thoughts, anxiety really and boredom of all things. The need for simulation.
So trust me Josh i know how scary it is, when thoughts will not leave you. It's like a horror story come to life in your own mind.

Thank you so much for sharing Josh.
I'm a mental health practitioner in the UK who has had MH problems myself, and has worked in a psychiatric hospital.
There's so much stigma and I'm so proud of you for sharing this. And when you don't know what's real or not, it is scary; you're not aware at that time that you're in a safe place.
Panic attacks can happen from over-breathing + caffeine + a misinterpretation of the physical signs of excitement as panic so that's makes so much sense to me.
Also, if people are looking to reduce caffeine: do it SLOWLY. Reduce one drink every 2-3 days to give your body time to adjust, and avoid the withdrawal because they are Not fun.
I want you to know it's not your fault - we are not taught about mental health, nor what signs to look for, and it does sneak up on us sometimes. So try not to be so hard on the fact you perhaps didn't see where things were going.

In 2018 my best friend was in a mental health facility for about a week and I was so scared for him. I drove 3 hours each way to go check on him every other day. Mental health is something that is as serious as physical health and should not be as stigmatized as some people make it. I am so glad you are okay, I have been a part of your RUclips following for the better part of a decade and would be heartbroken if anything ever happened to you or Brooke. I finally got help with my panic disorder and anxiety this year and it really made a difference in my quality of life. I am so thankful that you are okay.

Hey Josh! Glad to see you're back =) Chronic lurker here, been a fan for a long time. Anyway, I want to tell you some things that may help you in the long term.
I am absolutely convinced that these kinds of things are supposed to happen much more often to everyone. I think it's part of a natural process of personal evolution. I'll try to explain myself.
Our minds have two ways of functioning, one is all about order, structure, etc. while the other half is about perceiving, feeling, etc. When we neglect ourselves for too long, inevitably the perceiving half will start to urge us to pay attention. If we don't listen to it, it will get more and more aggresive because it's REALLY IMPORTANT that you pay attention to whatever it's trying to show you. That (combined with other factors as you said) eventually leads to these psychotic breaks. That part of your mind that is pushing you to pay attention to some things, it kind of knows everything, only that it's working in the background, so it occasionally comes to rectify our course.
So how do we solve this? I'm not a doctor, but... let's put it this way, I'm not too medication friendly. Personally I think they stop you from truly healing. I'm not saying that you should stop taking meds, but they're not going to fix anything. They may get you to a point where you can function normally once more, but that's about it. So the most important thing is to TRULY heal.
You have to take your time and face all the sht that you've been pushing away. You have to gather courage, and dive deep into your mind and face those things that you've been neglecting, denying about yourself, lying to your own self, etc. Don't take it personally, every single one of us has TONS of sht that we're neglecting, because they're things that very deeply they terrify us. I'm not saying this lightly, you'll have to really be brave, gather courage, because it is terrifying.
Once you make peace with that shadowy part of your psyche, you'll be swimming upwards, as if you reached the bottom of a pool and pushed yourself towards the surface.
Once you do that, you'll recover the other half of your mind. I'll explain it this way, with a metaphor. You (and 90% of people around the world) have been functioning all your life with just one hand. Only one hand and one arm. You didn't even know your other hand existed. It occasionally moved, and even moved the hand that you frequently use. Get the idea? Metaphorically, you've been doing everything with just one hand, while the other hand you don't even know you have.
Well, during this phase, you're just recognizing the other hand that you never used, and then learning to use it. Imagine that! Suddenly your life is much easier, since you suddenly "grew" a hand. You couldn't juggle before that. Now you can.
You have to make peace with yourself, recognize what you've been denying all your life, re integrate both halves of your mind, and come back with super powers (no joke) and a super capable mind.
Again, I'm not saying don't take meds, I'm saying that if you want to heal yourself, don't rely on them, that's not what they'll do. You'll have to go full instrospection and fix everything that needs fixing.
If you want some very interesting information on these subjects check out a channel called Uberboyo. Check their playlist on Jung. Take your time, listen, process, and get better. We're all here to support you =)

Glad to hear you're in a better place now. I don't really watch your stuff much but, as a long time sub of Emile and Stephen, naturally I've seen a lot of you for the best part of a decade. One thing I'll say is that, in my experience, you've always been a cheerful, wholesome guy who always seems to be smiling and laughing (which, in turn, makes me do the same.) I don't tend to associate you with anything negative and it's always been awesome to see you on vlogs/whenever I come across your channel. So it was a huge shock when I saw your wife posting that you were in the ER and eventually a mental health facility.
I've been through enough to know that just because people can seem happy doesn't mean that they are on the inside (or even subconciously) and even the most vibrant people can go through mental struggles. It's just how our minds are wired and it's just as unexplainable as when you see a fit and healthy person suddenly have a heart attack at a young age. But the 'why' isn't that important, it's more about healing, understanding yourself and making the changes to do what you can to keep your soul just as healthy as your organs. Part of that comes from getting your feelings out and being proud of who you are in your perfections and imperfections. I'm happy to see you have a good support system to help you through this and I'm just glad to see you back and smiling again. Look after yourself brother!

Josh! I'm so sorry you experienced this. I feel for you when you say it was a terrifying experience, especially when you couldn't put a narrative together of what was happening because of your memory. Of course it was scary!
Sometimes our mental health fails us spectacularly, over the course of a long period of time, and comes to a breaking point. You can try to tend to your mental health, as you were before your hospitalization with medication and talking more about it on this channel, but it's hard to know exactly what to do. How could one know exactly what to do? We're raised to think simply existing is enough to take care of ourselves, but sometimes it isn't. Everyone's mental health is different, too, so what treatments and medications work for one person won't always work for another.
What's important is that you are getting the care you need~ I'm so glad you were able to have access to help, learn more about yourself, and start on a path of taking better care of your mental health in a way that works for *you*.

Really glad to hear that you're safe and okay Josh! I can't imagine how hard it is to open up about stuff like this, but we can only continue to combat the stigma behind mental health through continuing the dialogue like you did in this video.
I hope that getting the diagnosis and proper meds was a relief for you and Brooke so you can get back on track :) wishing you nothing but the best

Wow, I know from some first hand experience that the wrong meds can have negative side effects but nothing this. Glad you’re okay, stay strong.

Im so glad you're ok and were able to get help from those that care. I really appreciate how open you're being about what you've been through. It's terrifying when brains do things they shouldn't and it's just so nice to be reminded everyone goes through something. The solidarity I've found in being open about mental health hardships is incredible and I hope more people learn to be understanding and open from you. You're an incredible person

So glad to hear you are feeling a lot better now. I've also taken the step of getting help for my own mental health by going to see a doctor and getting therapy.
One thing I have also found that helped is giving up energy drinks and replacing them with cold lattes instead and not having as many.
I wish you the very best and I am keeping you all in my prayers.

Thanks so much for sharing this Josh. I'm glad you are healing now. Please continue to do the great work that you do. I'd definitely love to see more videos on Mental Health topics due to its continued stigma. I've had mental health issues for half my life but didn't get proper treatment for them until recently because of said stigma.
I'm so sorry that this incident had to occur to you, Brooke and your family, but I'm glad things are going to get better from here. You'll still be in my thoughts, as we as a community definitely care about you.
    Best,
    ~KV

Hey Josh, so glad you’re on the mend. I can say that I’ve been there (not exactly your same scenario, but being hospitalized psychiatrically). I think we always have to be vigilant about our mental health, because it can be so easy to slip. We’re always gonna be here for you and Brooke! Sending much love!

Obviously it’s personal and you were under no obligation to share anything but I want to say I’m glad you did ❤️. Mental health can be really hard to talk about but I always think it’s important to have a dialogue about (when people are comfortable doing so!!) and I hope this helps someone. Sending all my love to you and Brooke and I’m so happy you’re doing better and feel more like yourself ❤️❤️❤️

I'm glad you're feeling better, I was worried for you and Brooke. Just don't get to the point I'm at where ER visits aren't really scary, I have to go multiple times a year typically for my health issues (Nothing too serious but when it gets really bad my doctor wants it observed) and my thought process on the way there is basically just hoping I get a room with a working TV this time XD

But I think I needed to see this video because there was some stuff that I'm realizing I'm relating with right now and my situation, but I won't make this about myself. Glad to see you are doing better right now and I hope things continue to get better!

Man I have been so busy with life and I had no idea anything was going on until you posted the Podcast with your Mom in. I wondered why you werent uploading and now it makes so much sense and I am SO glad you are safe.
One thing you mentioned is Caffine and my God you are so right. Caffine can be terrible. I don't claim to have been anywhere near as bad as what you went through but as a kid, if I drank Coka Cola or Pepsi I would start having hallucinations. We discovered it when I was about 10 or 11 and I would have like hallucinating nightmares. Like dreams of things growing like my mind was zooming in on something but never getting closer. I would wake up from them and go speak tomy parents where I would sound crazy describing some of the stuff I saw. Like I dont remember all of it and the sense of not knowing what was real and what was fake is scary. Like I remember staring at a screw on my door handle because it was close and the "zoom" felt less intense. I had just watched a Doctor Who Episode with a Shark in and I was having dreams about that. I know my Dad was in the room with me at one point but I remember lying face down on my bed and saying "Can you see that?" To my Dad and I have no idea if he was even there at that point. We soon learnt after three times this happened it was Cola that was the cause and it only happened at night, otherwise I have been fine. Since then, about 10 years ago, I have never had Cola or any energy drink or even Coffee because I dont want to ever have that happen again.
Sorry for this long comment, I just hope you are safe and I want to spread the word on Coffee and Energy Drinka because they can be very harmful.

So happy youre doing better. Ive struggled with mental health all my life and i think it really is still not talked about enough, or even properly in this world. I have stayed subbed and such on twitch (Nexus Riles on discord) and have had some great conversations with you. I might not have been to active but I try to watch the VODS when i can.
When I heard you were in the ER, I knew that something was up. Ive watched you long enough to know you have always been really supportiva about mental heatlh. In fact, youve helped me get better through a lot of my issues by talking about yours on stream.
My point? Who knows I ramble a lot, but i do know this: Josh, take care of yourself. Doing that helps other people in ways you may never know. That's what humanity is all about!
