1. Noun + 중이다
2. Verb stem~는 중이다
👩🏻🏫 CONJUGATION
- 반말 (non-polite, casual) : 중이야.
- 존댓말 (polite)
1) casual : 중이에요.
2) formal : 중입니다.
👩🏻🏫 EXAMPLES
1. N + 중이야/중이에요/중입니다.
2. V.S~는 중이야/중이에요/중입니다.

What about -고 있다 which also means to be verb-ing?
Basically the same! You can use both! ~는 중이다 literally translates as "to be in the middle of ~ing (an action)".
