  • Are you asking yourself, "Should I move to New York City?". New York City was once great, but today its signaling to the world that its not a good idea to live here or visit, unless you absolutely have to. There may be a second shutdown, and NYC’s cultural draws like theatre, dining and tourism are all closed for the winter. Stability for the City that Never Sleeps is a long way off and the future of New York is quite uncertain, and while our leaders and health officials try to predict whats next the rental and sales markets are collapsing / tanking. Are you still willing to come here in spite of all this, or is NYC dead forever and Finished?

It’s weird how small and overly expensive these apartments have always been that because people have to be stuck in their homes, now people are realizing.... ugh this is small and...ugh why does THIS cost so much?!?!

I’ve been a New Yorker circa 2004 and I tell ya, it feels like a ghost town. I’m on the upper west side with my boyfriend/Fiancé and our beautiful 4 year old English Bulldog Cookie 🐶 and seeing our beloved bars, lounges, Broadway shows all closed is disheartening 😔. We’ve already had to cancel our April 2020 wedding in Las Vegas and now his restaurant is on the verge of shutting down because it just couldn’t survive this pandemic. Please pray for us. We love NYC but living here in such an expensive apartment is putting us further and further in debt. I hate to leave our beloved city but my hometown is looking more and more like a reality for us after all.

As a native New Yawker of 60 years I appreciate less crowds though many more people are driving due to fear of mass transit. I don't see any type of normalcy until next Summer at the earliest. Of course NY will come back maybe not exactly to the state pre-Covid but don't bet on writing off this city. I wouldn't come to live here unless I absolutely had to at this point in time. Remember that landlords will be jacking up your rents when they deem it's feasible. You might get a deal for another year or two.

Where I live, in my hometown, is a beach with high tourism in summer. We unanimously agreed, as a town, to close our beach for the summer. It cost people a lot in business but has been amazing in several ways. Streets are empty and full-time residents can do business easily. We can easily enjoy amenities at a safe distance without fighting swarms of people aimed at consuming all resources and leaving a mess. Our town saved several hundred thousand dollars from the budget because of closures. It now seems more like the town I grew up in. Without the focus on visitors, the locals have really come together as a community. We have a Caremonger group administered via social media that has brought many of us together to help neighbours we never even knew. I have made some good friends based on that and people are getting help with what they need. Cities can be isolating but you also have the advantage of so many people, like Nick Mancello, who know the ropes and can help navigate. I highly recommend starting neighbourhood networks where they do not exist. Helping others one-on-one is a great way to take back the power in these times.

We help each other out, run errands for our elderly neighbors, pick packages up for each other, even cook for each other. And along with the small businesses who have survived, we've built a nice little community. This is the New York I remember from my childhood! I will certainly miss my New Yorkers when I leave. @Coral Islands Blah Blah Blah. Frankly those who are fleeing the city were gentrifieres who grew up in some milquetoast suburb and were never really cut out for city life to begin with. Right now, the city may be at a sweet spot in terms of cleaning house. Enough, of these mamby pamby people are gone to bring back the grit and character of the city (which was slowly becoming a Disneyfied soulless corporate he11scape), but not so many people fleeing that the entire city collapses. Its going to take a while for NYC to recover, but I imagine that after a vaccine is made available, the justification for excessive lock downs will weaken. I imagine a vaccine by late summer 2021, with distribution through the fall and winter with moderate spikes in COVID case numbers through winter 2022. Then a steady decline in COVID numbers as the vaccine is widely administered and warmer months headed into Spring/ Summer 2022. Things back to normal fall/winner 2022.

The other consideration is that $3000 a month could easily be a mortgage in Long Island, NJ, or parts of Westchester county for a sizeable 3-bedroom house with a yard, a garage, and 3-4x the space you get in Manhattan. After 17 years in NYC and five hellish months under lockdown during the pandemic I bought a nice, 2000 sqft house in a quiet neighborhood in Yonkers. I'm paying less than my rent used to be, my dogs have a place to run around, I don't need to mask up every time I take them out. and I am so much happier working and cooking all of my meals from home than I was in my tiny 690 sqft apartment. I'm sad to be counted among the people who "fled" NYC but quality of life took precedence over my love for the city. Maybe I'll come back someday.

It's not like it was, that's for sure, but I love the energy and resiliency of the people who are still here, it's like no other place!

I totally can relate. I’m a native New Yorker and I would literally spend my whole day out and about in the city doing anything. I used to only be home to sleep and get ready for my day. Now during all of this I’m home all day in my tiny apt and it’s hard 😭. This whole covid thing would go away faster if everyone would just wear a face mask 😑 but of course there are people who think they’re above science.

These are considerations for anyone moving to a large city in the US, not just NYC. Things are actually better here right now than in a lot of rural areas. The problem with living in NY is if the city does get locked down again, you're stuck. Most people can't just hop in their cars and take a relaxing drive somewhere. But if you absolutely have to move to NY it's a great time to rent an apartment.

I can’t imagine living anywhere else, and I’ve been to a lot of places. There’s still too much here that you can’t get anywhere else. My life now is slower paced, but not much changed from pre-Covid times. I’m still meeting my friends for coffee or lunch, still grabbing a few things at the bodega, and still strolling through the parks. It’s still my neighborhood. I kinda love the city with this slower pace and hope that aspect stays. Yes, it’s a much different city today, and it’s sad to see businesses failing, but I believe that in a few years the city will come back evolved and even stronger.

I love your honesty. I'm a born and bred New Yorker but am planning to move to Europe after the winter (I have dual citizenship and my company allows us to work from anywhere in the US and EU5). Although cases are also spiking there, at least everyone has healthcare so people don't feel forced to go to work when they're sick, and the political climate is mostly better than it is right now in the US. That, and where I plan to move to (outside of Rome) I will be paying less than $1,000/month for a two-bedroom apartment. My poor NY. It breaks my heart to see her this way, but we all have to do what's best for ourselves and our families.

I'm old enough to remember when NYC (212) was dangerous, rude, and you couldn't ride the subways (shout out to the Guardian Angels) or even walk through alphabet city. Meat packing district was the 'lock-your-doors-and-speed-up' type of area. Soho was cheap and full of artist's studios, markets and $25/night brothels. When Giuliani came to office, he was like a giant broom with no dust bin and swept everything out that gave New York City it's energy. It became this safe, over priced city that no one could afford or enjoy without a ton of money. Boring suburbanites gentrified colourful neighborhoods hoping that their newly purchased brownstones would make them interesting. Now these people are leaving. Greedy lazy landlords have no one to con to stay in a roach infested hovel and are losing all their money... I'm here for it. New York has to offer more to it's residents than just it's name.

I’ve lived in NYC my whole life. Since Covid though I’ve been staying in PA in a house. And I came back to NYC the past few weeks and it’s simply not the place it was. The longer the lockdown stays in place the worse it will be for restaurants and small stores. And the less likely it will be that large companies justify spending millions on office space here. When tourists are really not coming here.
So, while I think nyc can come back at some point, the longer the shutdown the worse the economic devastation and the less justification to do business in NY. And this will extend the time thst NY recovers.

When I retired, I traded my simple colonial on 1/4 acre for a stunning riverfront estate in an incredibly low-cost, low-tax place (with decent cash left over) with a great climate, & far more services, amenities & shopping. My savings will last at least 30 years, whereas if I'd stayed up north I'd have been taxed out of my home & burned thru my savings in under a decade. Only wish I could have done it sooner!

You have to quarantine for 14 days even when we now have a test that shows results in 15 minutes! That's how you know it's an economic operation.

@@joshmadarang128 Right, but the same-day-result test is widely available everywhere in nyc!! then why the 14-day mandatory quarantine???!! unless you want to purposefully want to strangle the economy!

Isn't it because it may take days after you got got in contact with the virus before you test positive (with or without symptoms) ? Though I believe 14 days is clearly exagerated, 10 or even 7 days should be enough...

    • @Sam-ne9ns
      @Sam-ne9ns 3 года назад +1

@@vince4863 That's not scientifically true. The moment you get it you test positive. The recovery rate is %99.8. So you have a better chance of getting hit by a car than getting sick from the cold virus.

I think all NY leadership is responsible for the success or failure of NYC. It’s a team effort

I like your content Cash but people need to realize that if people start leaving that makes everything amazing for the locals and POC here. Gentrification is so horrible and has booted people out of their own communities. It’s time to take them back as people of color and locals and reap the benefits. NYC has survived pretty much everything so it will survive this.

there’s always a positive! like the way you think. I hope rents get more affordable because the issue is there arent enough apartments. thats why its so high. if remote work stays there will be more apartments for those of us who want them

Rents need to come down... the city needs the working class and the working class needs a place to live.
