- Julien Cohen’s first home was carved into the side of a hill in La Roque Gageac, a troglodytic village stacked against a sheer cliff. He spent 5 years in this sliver of a home where the stone face is everywhere: as the ceiling of his closet and shower, behind the refrigerator, and in the wall looming over the bed.
During the Hundred Year’s War, La Roque Gageac, was one of the few towns that never fell to the English, thanks to a fort perched on the cliff at the top of town whose only access is a tiny staircase (It still stands).
The views from the cliff are panoramic perspectives on the Dordogne River and surrounding castles; this is an area Henry Miller called the “Frenchman’s paradise”. Here, Cohen lived for five years until his growing family made the small space too difficult.

You have such a knack for finding these amazing gems, Kirsten. Wonderful work!
Hi Ben how are you doing?
Absolutely
The beauty of French villages is almost unparalleled. In Spain we have the nature potential, but we messed up most of our beautiful views with horrendous building plans during the 50´s to the 80´s mainly, but even nowadays. I´m glad that you took care of the aesthetics of your country.
I love the sense of history your videos convey. You know you're in an old place when "The War" the locals refer to is The Hundred Year War! With such deep history, who needs street names or addresses? Anyone who needs to know those things already does. Thanks for sharing such magical places so artfully.
The beautiful blue against the stone and the song of the birds, absolutely wonderful
absolutely.
Enchanting!
Those are jackdaws. And they drop a lot of tiny rocks down below 😂.
Absolutely magical, no? Yes, Absolutely!

I spent three months driving all over southern France with my French then-girlfriend in 2010. We canoed that very section of the Dordogne river and did all the tours and stuff. It's been 11 years and those three months are still the coolest part of my life!
Silly inquiry but is she your wife now? How old were you when you took the 3month trip? Been day dreaming about taking such a trip for a little over a year now…
I've passed thru France as a small child post-war going to Switzerland to visit my grandparents around 1948 or so, but only recently have I 'seen' this beautiful, creative country via RUclips....they have imagination & culture all over & a delightful attitude in what makes a 'house' ! The stonework & all those blue shutters & quirky buildings everywhere just make me smile.....love it all....thank you for this film, I am a fervent admirer of this country forever !
@@egesajesse She is not... long story. I was 36. She was a lot younger. I'd never have been able to do this without her though as she was a native speaker (from Paris). One thing people may not know is that France doesn't have any laws against camping on the side of the road (unless that's changed). We had one of those tents that self-erects when you let it go so we simply drove where the day took us, found a meadow or a clearing in the forest or on a hilltop, and spent the night. We'd do hotels a couple times a week. We ate out of a cooler and box of food we supplied from the grocery stores to keep costs low. I have to say, it was liberating! If you can go, go! I'd be happy to suggest my list of must do places if you'd like, but I'm sure you already have one :)
@@veronicaroach3667 As am I! Driving through the countryside spoke to my soul for the very same reasons.
@@wesley5nipes I'll be in the Dordogne / Lot area for a month starting next week. I'd love to see your list of suggestions.....
It's not a gutter, it's a "casse-goutte" to make sure the water drips from that point 7:41
Hi Jerome how are you doing?
Love this content!!! It's always so thoughtful and well put together, really wonderful! Thank you!
Hi Christopher how are you doing?
Thank you for including the sound of the European robin bird...it brings me back to when I lived in Europe. Very interesting piece.
I just love all of the small pieces of rock poking out everywhere, so charming!!

Gorgeous little house, cool in summer. I would be a little worried about those rocks above me though. Thanks for this interesting video, Kirsten.
I see videos like this I just can't help but wonder just how many hidden stuff like this is hidden in the world.
If it wasn't for Kirsten, we woulda never seen or known about this place.
We love ruins, rustic houses, this! Wonderful video. We love it. The nature, the rock, stone houses exactly this. Great! Thanks for sharing to us.
Absolutely an awesome tiny place, where you can die at any moment from a falling rock, but aside from that, it's absolutely a charming place. Btw., the audio is absolutely horrific, so I watched it all sans sound, which absolutely helped me concentrate on having a glass of absolutely awesome wine...cheers 🥂
Absolutely !
This is amazing and beautiful. Would love to visit. Maybe some day.
Me too!
I would love a place like that. When I played my flute the acoustics would be amazing

Stunning. One of your best. Thank you.
Fun. Interesting. Important to get a sense of our heritage. You have created he best job on earth, Kirsten. My life is richer because I watch your channel. I cannot immagine how dull the world would be without your channel. Thank you. I live to hear your "Oh, wow."
This place is awesome looking. Thank you for sharing this place with us. Beautiful
Absolutely awesome house! I especially love how he left the rock wall raw and unpainted.

Thank you for another outstanding and revealing presentation Kirsten! Thank you to Julien too!
This is absolutely beautiful.
Totalmente mágico! Esos lugares llenos de historias que prevalecen a través del tiempo. Un lugar de ensueño. Gracias!
Well here it is - a perfect man cave... :))
I was anticipating this comment.
Absolutely 😁
I enjoyed seeing a place that I may never see in person.
Beautiful. Truly the stuff of a fantastic storybook .
This. Is. Stunning!
So beautiful! No ugly buildings allowed there, it seems. Ah, to live in such a gorgeous place!
STUNNING view!
That is another dream place of mine to visit…ABSOLUTELY!😊😁
❤
Absolutely beautiful ! 👍😁
Thank you for this. It makes me miss having once lived in rural France so so very much.
Hi Gary how are you doing?
This place made me 😊. I found it very practical as the hillside temp is very stable and sound proof…Plus, you could dig out a larger space if you wished to.
Hi Brando how are you doing?
Wonderful history, and beautiful location. I think these homes will become hot property with the extreme heat growing worse around the world. I love the green ! 🌳
Absolutely beautiful
Kirsten you have been showing houses of people and I followed you a long time. And love all your video content. Can you show your house next time? I'm intrigued. Lol
The birds sound so pretty. Great video. Absolutely fantastic 😄
It’s really beautiful there, also those caves were ABSOLUTELY inhabited by cro magnon people 50,000 years ago
Absolutely indeed XD
absolutely.
Awesome 👍 love the history you find!!! 🤗
"I'm gonna throw a rock off here and see what happens."
"Don't throw a rock off here."
Parents everywhere felt that.
"I'm gonna throw YOU off here and see what happens."
@@AbsoluteNut1 hee hee. But seriously: why make him wear that useless mask ?
When I was that age, my Grandpa who lived on a steep hill had JUST finished building a fence down his canyon. My brother and I were climbing down there and I "accidentally on purpose" dislodged a volleyball sized rock. I expected the wooden fence to stop it. Instead, the rock rolled right through it with a loud *CRACK!* that resounded through the canyon.
@@bobgillis1137 hee hee. But seriously: how did you got to the conclusion that his mask is useless?
Hi Christopher how are you doing?
wow, this is so magical!
absolutely!
That is wonderful. Have to visit sometime. Hopefully the heavy rains this past week haven't done any damage to this enchanted place.
I expect they have had lots of rain over the centuries! Lol 😆
(Considering he was talking about the hundred years war, back in the 14th century.)
This house is amazing! No wonder he’s SO chill. Now visiting this area is on my travel wish list.
Absolutely lovely.
That was very interesting, thank you for the tour 🙂
Take me here. I love this creativity instead of these new houses we have no a days
Beautiful... Get this feeling in our Blue Ridge. It's nice to see that some things are worth saving.
Oh I love that fireplace.
He wouldn’t need a firebox that large unless it was a cooking fireplace. I’ve seen people sit in a large fireplace before. Very cool house. Great vid Kirsten
We Scots call the space at the side of the fireplace an inglenook.
@@aliciarobertson4979 now that’s cool. Thank you.
I Absolutely love this video 💕

Yeah, absolutely!
Beautiful! There are similar cave homes in Southern Spain. Thanks for sharing.
They have them in southern Italy, as well. Matera has some you can rent. They can be a bit damp in the winter.
I remember seeing some in Granada back in the late 70s, when I was in school
In Madrid,
that some Britas were living in, they just squatted them, but not sure squatted is the correct word. Anyway sera de 'puta madre'!
A must visit that area some day. Thank you for bringing us here to this surprising area.
Thanks for posting and sharing. Neat old place.
The Dordogne region is with Switzerland the nicest place i visited. I stayed in Cénac for 2 weeks great food great memories.
I have friends who lived in Cénac. We enjoyed a nice Claret from their neighbor's vineyards.
Wow i just love cave homes. One day i hope to either make one or buy one.
If the walls can talk: "Yes Absolutely!"
yes absolutely. it's a drinking game around here.
You beat me to it! Stole the words right out of my mouth! 🤣🤣🤣

I'm French. Please tell me we're not all like that...
Absolutely
Knew it
Have you considered converting the basement and attic into rooms and adding an internal staircase? It looks like this could be made into a larger three-floor house without changing the outer appearance much.
The world could be so much prettier and more in harmony. These places are living proof 😍
You asked great questions! Loved the video. Excellent presentation, even though the guys English was small, he tried very well.
A little seat right beside/in the fireplace (like the seating spot he demonstrated just before 6:30) is called an "inglenook." They're really _VERY_ common in cold climates!
I've always wanted to live in a cave/home like that one, so this video awakens some _VERY_ old yearnings in me. I don't think I ever _WILL_ live in a cave/home, though, as I'm getting too old & crippled up for stairs, etc. Oh, well, perhaps in my _NEXT_ life.... 😉 I'm looking forward to that!
It's absolutely stunning place! 😍
Do I like this home? Yes, absolutely!
THANKS for posting your video on this spectacular area. We have visited the Dordogne and similar troglodyte houses in cliffs along the Loire.
Hi James how are you doing?
Really like these homes!
The bird songs & calls are
divine! 🙂🙃
You find such unique charming dwellings to share with us. I love this one, it's a tiny house & tiny homes are my ideal home.
Wonderful!
I visited La Roque Gageac fairly recently - beautiful place, and very interesting to see inside one of its houses.
At first I was blown away, but the more they went inside, the more I was filled with a slight feeling of unease. Didn't recognize it as a bit of claustrophobia, at first. The house is amazing, the view is amazing, but I don't know if I'd want to live under a mountain, with so few windows.
Oh, it works for me! I guess I am a burrowing animal.
It is absolutely absolute.
Amazing!!! Soooo beautiful!! Wow!!
Absolutely poke pins in my eyes lol it’s the new drinking game ABSOLUTELY

He's one of the most French-looking people I have ever seen. This place is so beautiful and he is very lucky,
So stunning. I adore the little community and all the different colour doors and gardens. Reminds me of Solenyat forgive the spelling that my sister lived in .a little village all stone, and no cars allowed. There is a beautiful village above monte carlo in the hills similar to this place.
Absolutely.
J’adore, magnifique ⛰🏠! Merci 👏

Hi Robert how are you doing?
Beautiful home
What an idyllic little home & town, so cool!
How lucky all the people are in your videos it’s a hard watch of someone who’s life or dreams never came forth to the life I wanted to acheive 😪✌️.
Beautifully modernized!
Lovely video! You said he lived there for 5 years, I assume he still owns the house and either rents it out or hires for holidays? Really enjoyed watching!
This French guy is so cute ☺️ his mannerisms.
This magical place can’t be from Earth!
So so beautiful.......I'm speechless
ABSOLUTELY
Wow, absolutely amazing, the cavemen would be very impressed with the upgrades, lol. 🌴😎🌴
Wish I'd thought of this. What a great place to live.
Brava Kirsten. You've done it again!
Long winters sitting inside the fireplace to keep warm, in the olden days.
In English housing it would be called an inglenook fireplace.
Bravissima Kirsten!
Lovely job 💕
If you get the opportunity, check out the village of Rocamadour perched above the Dordogne. The hotel I stayed in there used the cliff face as the back wall. The whole Dordogne river region is so enchanting.
Hi Rick how are you doing?
That's some Lord Of The RIngs styled architecture right there.
I'd totally envisioned Gandalf walking towards me and offering me some pipeweed.
