  • Let's plan to take good care of our cables here at STA! Learn the over-under wrap and use it every time you wrap a cable.

I feel like I've watched 100 of these videos and this is the first one that has made sense to me, lol.

I guess this method its proper for short cables and studios. But for big venues this is not practical at all. We need to be able to sort of "roll" the wrapped cable through the stage, in the middle of lots of stands and instruments, so the classic "thumb twist" its better for that situation.

Yes, I need a friend to film this for me next time. And a friend in general. I will refresh this at some point in the not too distant future. If you look at 5:01 I tried to make it a little clearer

Any suggestions on what to do if you DON'T have the Velcro wrap to keep the cable from unraveling?

We take our students to a local recording studio and they use string instead of velcro. Sometimes the velcro picks up hair, lint and other junk so the string idea might not be a bad technique. I just read a tip that said to buy or use black shoelaces. :-)

That said, Amazon sells the vlecro in 100 packs for about $10 -- www.amazon.com/VELCRO-Brand-Reusable-Fastening-Organizing/dp/B001E1Y5O6/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1V623K464C0SA&keywords=velcro+cable+ties&qid=1556906632&s=gateway&sprefix=velcro+%2Caps%2C150&sr=8-3

I thought I had replied to this comment, but here I am a year later...replying. Thanks for this tip. As we're using these skills at a high school I'm always lucky to get them to wrap the cable correctly and use the velcro -- many times they just ignore it which always blows my mind. I hadn't adopted the consistency of where to put the velcro since we didn't always have velcro and more importantly I didn't know the standard. Now we'll get it going that way. Thanks!

FAIL. Right at the trickiest part -- the "under" wrap -- your right hand is completely outside the bottom of the video frame. I quit right there.

Thanks for the feedback. I made this video for my digital media students and it's gotten some views from others. I never anticipated someone needing to only see this, just that they could watch this before/after I show them in person. There's nothing incredibly different about how one would grab the cable for the under wrap, it's the way the cable is lifted up which I did show better at 3:44 -- Someday I'll make a new one of these!
