  • I have been a harsh critic of this perk. I started to wonder if done right, how well would it do? Well, If things get changed it will be a top option. There is a way to make it work and work very well right now. I hope they change it!

      Seems like it should be the default functionality, so maybe just buff it to where you've got it while radiant. Also, since they are un-nerfing dodge, won't we be back to 10 mob cool downs? So when you brought yourself down to 8, that will be irrelevant next season since they are reverting the nerf, making your frostees build even better?

      If it gave a bonus to enemies when you break their overshield sort of like how disruption break works I'd think it'd be a top 10 perk

      It does need a little buff. But I got it on a Stay Frosty and use it during iron banner. Because of all the void over shields and rifts I was deleting 4 or 5 guardians in a row using it. A little bump and it would be a great perk to use. I was oddly surprised at how effective it was during those matches. I will keep using it as long as void overshields continue to be spammed in pvp.

      Also it looks like you could maybe 3-tap a titan through a void overshield if you waited for their overshield to start regenerating so you can keep the 84 damage, but that definitely seems finicky

      Correct, my pure poetry with this perk totally slaps, and most of my UO weapons make it work as well. Whether it's giving someone a haircut with albruna-d or gently nudging some headshots with the braytech werewolf, I definitely think there's a decent spot for this perk, specifically in pvp.

    All the perk needs is to linger the damage buff for like 2 seconds after shooting an overshield. Also think it would be interesting if the bonus worked vs woven mail come lightfall.

      Probably not. Because that's more Armor I think theyve said. And the shield doesn't cover heads like overshield. Only body. Which is nice.

      @@Zaproz_ i dont expect it to work, i just think it would be neat if bungie made it work since woven mail is similar to an overshield in practical use. even though woven mail doesnt stop headshot damage I still suspect its going to be a big deal, particularly with shotgun duels.

      @@ghostridernz17 woven mail is going to kill fusions more than shotguns. the dr that only applies on non crits means the fusion is going to need to hit extra bolts to kill and potentially might not kill. Atleast a shotgun usually has a melee follow-up if it doesnt one hit. If anything slug shotguns will be the meta to counter woven mail shotgun rushes.

    Feel like the perk could very much be extended to any opponent currently experiencing a buff. Similarly, it could spawn a new perk that activates when debuffed yourself? Increased damage when suppressed, scorched, jolted perhaps? Feel like that would create a really interesting dynamic between abilities and gunplay as opposing ability usage would buff your gunplay, especially if they could roll in separate columns on the same weapon.

      Agreed. Maybe 10%. It would make people use their over shields for defense instead of offense which I think is what the gameplay philosophy of over shields should be. A second chance not a buff to engage in combat.

      @@kin-3877 Not quite. DB works on the regular base shield not over shields and only buffs kinetic damage while only dropping on energy weapons (Arbalest is the exception) requiring a weapon swap or teammates using kinetic.

      They should just make the shot deal regular damage plus whatever damage number is required to strip the os. That way you’re losing a perk slot and it’s fair

    It feels like jumping through a lot of hoops to make a bad perk feel useful, for the most part I think I'd prefer to run ace of spades for the 2-tap build against 9 resil or less if I'm running frostees.

    Actually was looking forward to a video on this as I like to know if there are were tools I could add to the tool box. Seems to not be the case, perhaps.
    Hmm interesting use case in the latter half of the video.
    I really like the idea of making "choices" and hard counters that sacrifice in one place for exceptional effectiveness in another way.

    Great analysis of this perk, CoolGuy. I've kept a couple weapons with this perk just in case they buff it. I don't think any of your suggestions are unreasonable either. Overshields/regens are here to stay and they need a stronger counter.

    A couple things:
    1) Didn't know about the rift interaction, thank you.
    2) I really want to try over-under + kill clip together for huge chunks of damage. I don't see any other reason to run the gun. For me personally, the suros model sucks. It's not as nice to aim with and the audio feedback isn't very pleasing. Furthermore, my Rose has much better handling and aim assist, explosive payload, and a better frame bonus. Adept palindrome is also still better.
    3) The perk might work against Strand woven mail, if we're lucky (although you should be hitting headshots anyways, and those are unaffected). If it does, you will be able to 2C1B

    Maybe a rework to the perk would make it a viable option. Instead of doing more damage to an overshield, have it give a damage bonus upon breaking an overshield

    Hey Cool guy! I was packman627 on the other team on that game of Fortress, I queued into quick play and I found myself against you, and TrueVanguard was on my team. I couldn't believe that two RUclipsrs I watch were in the same game as me!
    That fortress game was very close and a lot of fun! I was running void warlock with axion bolts with Escape Velocity SMG and the Techuen Force fusion

    If i see an overshield in the crucible i just dont challenge them in the next 15 sec. U can play around a titan barricade and warlock rift kinda easy nowerdays. The cooldows are like high enough. Like i wouldnt give up rangefinder for a perk that does something in a situation thaz im bot forced to play

    over shields are not exactly "totaly free" you are using a ability to gain it, the price is using the ability, sure they could up the cooldown to compensate for a strong buff like the over shield but its not exactly free. the new fragment that gives an over sheild for wining a gun fight yeah that is a problem as its cost is very very cheap as there are not many fragments that compeat with it
    as for this perk yeah is a shame it doesnt just negate the oversheild entierly but then again if it did you would imidately see over shield vanish from PvP and noone would run any other perk but this and it would devolve into the situation hand cannons already find themselves in with rangefinder and to a lesser extent opening shot being the "if the gun doesnt have it then its trash"
    the cost for this perk to work being radiant is not bad but it is steaper for some classes than others so it could do with a small buff so it doesnt need the equivolent of rampage x3 to work efectivly

    How about we delete the perk and just make amor piercing rounds the overshield and pve shield bonus tool. Gives the mag perk a purpose. The soul ability to deal with overshields is too niche to warrant its use over other potent perks.

    Bastion takes an Aspect slot, so you don’t have Controlled Demolition, and you also lose a fragment not to mention weakening the barricade and increasing its cooldown.
    Its a bit odd to insinuate the overshields are free and there’s no build cost associated or downside.

    Should also work against invisible opponents as well. And they should buff it so you dont need radiant for it to be good.

    The issue with Under-Over is that it doesn't really provide a CLEAR counter to punish overshields (which we call absolute gains), nor changes the decision-making process of an overshield user. An overshield either forces you to just deal extra damage to secure the kill, or asks for you give up a neutral perk like rangefinder for something situational. I would personally always take the neutral perk and just know that I have to deal a bit more damage to overshields when they come up.

    I like the idea of hard counters in destiny because it can make a meta into more of a rock paper scissors match instead of everyone running the same thing. The problem that I can see happening with under over is that it affects void titans and warlocks much more than other classes by nature of the tools available. If it does get buffed or changed to be more of a hard counter, we need to watch for some outcry.

      outcry for counter a free fucking advantage ? the gone be getting shields for getting a kill next season OEM on void... if you get 3 tap in your rift guess what? you popped a BAD RIFT ..void titans run up to us.... pop a shield they can hide behind and get an overshield ... u think a player gonna pop and run out like he was testing ? those are bad plays ...

    I use stasis titan which means sometimes I'll only have a tiny bit of over shield from smacking a crystal. Which means if someone pulls out one of these I might get two tapped for having like 12 extra health. Which sounds annoying.

    I have the Banner sidearm with this perk (perfect otherwise) and it genuinely felt like it helped against OS Titans in a vacuum, until I realized, like you've been saying, that has nothing to do with the perk; Sidearms are just pretty good at combating overshield already.
    I think if they wanted it to be genuinely viable, it should just bypass overshield entirely. I'm not sure if that's possible with how the game is coded since I'm pretty sure OS's are just extra hit points, but if it could damage only base health through it and finish off the kill, it would be a lot better as a counter. Or barring that, give it some wild temporary damage/stat bonuses on breaking an overshield, enough to make the gunfight against any other nearby OS users significantly easier in some respect.
    Alternatively, they could give it some kind of bleedthrough effect like later Halo Reach patches, as long as the effect is actually pronounced enough to reduce the amount of bullets needed to secure a kill.
    Kinda a shame the perk shipped so half baked considering it dropped during the peak of OS spam. Could've been a legitimate chase, instead it is just a Perk In Destiny 2.

    As an avid Frenzy enjoyer I can tell you Exalted Truth with Under-Over and Frenzy gets the job done fairly easy. I think Frenzy in general is heavily slept on in PvP but I am not convinced it's worth it to run Under-Over still. Really sad they didn't change the damage numbers on Under-Over in season 22. Missed opportunity.

    I'm not a fan of lock and key style of design. I've never liked Under-Over as it currently stands because its use case is just too narrow (overshields is the lock, and underover being the key). We already have problems with vault storage in the game, the more perks we have that are highly situational - instead of broadly useable - the worse that problem is gonna be.
    Although there is one big problem with applying this perk as a one-size-fits all "player buff counter" - what about weave mail (or whatever the new Strand buff is called)? If underover gave a damage buff against all players with buffs, but weave mail does NOTHING if you get shot in the head, underover would be a 100% uptime damage buff against Strand players, as long as you hit them in the head (which isn't that hard to do in Destiny).
    That being said, I do think the idea is a good one - and a vast improvement over how the perk is currently. You would just have to be careful in its application.

    I'm waiting for a Kinetic weapon with Adaptive Munitions, Under Over, and Armor-Piercing Rounds. All 3 at the same time on the same roll, preferably as a craftable gun too for enhanced perks.

    Maybe a 15% boost instead of 10% would be more mathematically viable?
    And yes, Under-Over should be allowed to be strong. It exists purely to deal with Overshields. If there are none, the perk is useless. If there are so many people running Overshields that I would consider gimping my overall performance just to deal bonus damage to those Overshields, then it should be good at doing it.
    Since the sole purpose of Overshields is to give a significant advantage to the user, the least Under-Over could do is level the playing field back to normal since I chose to invest into it.
    And I would like Under-Over to boost damage dealt to Woven Mail bodyshots, too.

    Under-over is the worst on a titan since there is no easy dmg boost ability. You could run throwing hammers but you have to land it first before becoming radiant.
    The way I look at it: titans have an easy on-demand defensive buff (overshield), hunters have an easy on-demand offensive buff (radiant), and warlocks can have either healing or emp rift (just no 3.0 keywords). All these buffs can be applied to teammates.

    Ok Coolguy maybe you try it already but. Try it with a Hunter Void subclass, throw your smoke B first, that should weakens the opponent then shot them with that gun. Number 2: I hve that park in a Trails Inquisitor Trials Shotgun and u know that it’s hard to 1 shot A Overshield Titan, well try it with this shotgun and that perk! Nasty

    When I saw the perk I had assumed it would be a near complete counter in the sense that if they have an overshield, they still die in the guns base TTK (this instance, 3 headshots with 140), so unless this perk is designed for VERY specific gun types (think of old school 2 taps with 120s using rampage) it definitely needs a buff or a change. I dont see value in pvp for a perk that is super specific for 1 job, but doesnt even do that job better than other perks.

    I have an Exalted Truth with Under-Over and Kill Clip. I haven't been able to secure a kill and then face an overshield just yet to see the benefits of this combo. But I would like to know if Under-Over would have some niche synergy with other perks? That might make it worth trying in this Titan meta.

    This may run counter intuitive to the spirit of buildcraft but Over-under should've been a perk that:
    Deals damage *through* overshields, cancels out and prevents healing sources outside of recovery for a short period of time period. No extra damage to overshields just straight up ignoring them.
    Then there would be no more guess work or class specific build craft, just flat-footed benefits to *keep* gun fights equal.

    I want to see how it feels against a healy/overshield team on an overload weapon, but like not at the expense of a neutral game or damage perk. I think that latter bit is my main issue with it, it's neat but not enough to eat up a perk slot, it feels like weapon mod slot level of performance.

    Is empyrean still super buggy? Couldn't you run both now since radiant with Solace is down to 12 seconds, which is what the max with empyrean is? Getting kills with solar weapon/ability can decrease down time on radiant.

    I think it should break break the OS like matching to a elemental shield. So say like an extra 25 AOE explosion. So first shot would be on 140 for like 105ish total

    you have made me think of a new perk that could be, call it misery loves company maybe, heres the pitch: on hit remove targets buff
    anything that requires activation is removed, rampage stacks, os, radiant, encore, memento mori, any and crucially all, so yes you could lose both radiant and an os and memento mori and cure x2, etc.
    heres the balance, when a buff is removed, the player loses 1 shot to kill worth of damage, (yes even special and heavy will take an additional shot to kill, your rockets are nerf, your snipe headshot is now a 2 shot, your shotty does only 50% damage), an across the board 1 shot loss to shots to kill, this debuff applies to the player for 5 seconds + 2 seconds for every buff removed after 1, during which you cannot reactivate the perk, getting a kill resets the damage part of the perk, but not the debuff cooldown, so you cant reactivate it until the timer runs out
    bc its a player debuff you cannot just switch or swap weapons and fight normally, you have to fight with your disadvantage for the full 5+ seconds or until a kill

    I do like the idea of it punishing subclass verbs. Invis, Woven Mail, Resto and Cure, Overshield.

    They gotta stop tying such powerful shit to a hunter dodge that comes back every like 12 seconds. Warlocks only used to have radiant. Melee only, long cool down. Now a hunter can just dodge and run into a fight. Bungie is seriously just not interested in balance of any kind.

    Hey cool guy you should re evaluate the perk on. Bottom dollar and tripwire. It shifts your ttk to normal 3 shot at 10 resil on the 120 and normal ttk 1 head 1 body with lightweight bow. With out it both leave an enemy 1 shot with out? Check it out. But yes it needs a buff as a general perk.

    I have stashed a few weapons with this perk going for a buff or rework at some point. I do think it should hard counter an over shield in some way. My thoughts are keep the 20% buff against overshield then give 5 seconds of 10% general buff after hitting an overshield

    So I got underover on the new gambit sniper last night. Literally, it’s amazing running it with my hunter and becoming radiant. The amount of damage you to warlocks in their wells is amazing and jug titans running around everywhere. Fun perk but situational.

    Of course it crushes warlock rifts and nothing else. Bungie hates warlocks 😂. Of course it’s better on Hunter and all you have to do is dodge to get a damage boost yet they removed damage boost from sunspots 😂.

    That perk is more valuable in a Shotgun. U have no idea how many Overshield B Titans I have one shot when they come rushing me. They don’t expect to get one shot kill.

    under-over is kind of about circumventing defenses, right? maybe give it a little bit of a percent increase but then also expand the range of defenses it's good against. what about vs targets with damage resistance as well? beats glaives, stasis bs, people in their class ability animations, stag rifts, even the new woven main if you suck at hitting heads. even helps against supers, but ideally not as much as vorpal

    The thing I don't understand is how survivability and healing effects that extend the TTK are vilified vs damage boosting effects that reduce TTK or otherwise improve your ability to secure the kill are treated as a matter of course. I think creating tools like OverUnder is an excellent piece to create a form of neutralization RPS, however it would suck if the game devolved purely into Perk RPS. I'd prefer a tug-of-war between damage and survivability.

      For the most part damage perks and damage boost require more from the player. They've mostly been tuned down as well where most don't extend effective range that far or dramatically reduces ttk much. Gun archetypes also are mostly balanced around these perks, like adaptive pulses being quite weak until they get a substantial boost. Usually rapid or consecutive headshots, orbs, lots of special amo, kills, etc. Even then damage bonuses also go away quickly or can be waited out. On the other hand you spawn in with a bastion barricade or healing made. As you wait those things out they're getting the abilities back very quickly. The potency is also so high to the point where you can survive an ignition by throwing down a healing nade. The small over shield from repulser or the titan melee is enough to make your survive extra ticks from nades or being ttk from and auto or smg. Constant healing on shield regen makes survivability insane. Outliers exist for some damage boost, but there is a clear path to them being tuned down and they aren't as wide spread as healing nades or bastion. Everyone has those and no matter the skill level, they can see how strong those abilities are.

      @@brivs512 I can understand the Bastion problem, but how is suddenly recovering HP and gaining a heal over time with a heal grenade way worse than suddenly removing a bunch of health and placing a damage over time with an incendiary grenade. Sure the cooldowns are different but the reaction is disproportionate towards the function. If the cooldowns were more in line, I have a feeling it'd still be looked down upon. If gun archetypes are currently balanced around only damage boosts, then gun balance should start accounting for survivability as well. Isn't that where the shortcoming lies?

      @@hobobrojo I agree gun balance and other outliers get ignored a lot. The god awful connections also play a role in how potent some things feel. Then again this is Destiny we're playing, where a very vocal minority complain about strike difficulty increasing or shots "whiffing" and claim there is little to no aa in the game lol. Throwing a nade remotely close to your feet or popping a barricade is waaaaayyyy easier than hitting a 3 tap. Those crazy guns and damage perks do exist, but aren't seen in practice so much because of the player base. Thus the vast majority of the population will be disproportionately affected by os and resto by an insane amount. Plus they often don't have to choose anyways. Even if they can't stay alive long enough to proc ravenous beast or 2 tap with mori, they can still use those powerful guns and have the forgiveness of os and resto. There isn't much of a choice with these things. You can have your cake and eat it too in this case because it's all abilities. They could abuse no time, tarrabah, radiance, box b, etc as well with those things. Johnny day job is going to miss the two burst half the time but will get free hp and healing guaranteed. And you could put pre nerf Lorentz on a bad players load out and the difference won't be felt nearly as much or rather as often as os. They'll still find a way to miss 2 shots but they sure as hell will spam abilities and no matter how good you are you will feel that impact of having to fire that extra x amount of shots because they're aren't missing that tracking resto nade.

That new void fragment got a lot of hate because its an overshield for AFTER getting a kill. Why is it so terrible compared to accessing Kill Clip after getting a kill? They both require the same amount of work to gain a transferable benefit to the next fight. Is Precious Scars heinous for healing me and my team when I get a kill with my element? To me, it all depends on the amount that it moves needle.

      @@hobobrojo the thing is that it's not in isolation. I think it can be easy to forget that there is a lot at play in the sandbox in any given meta. P scars gives you and nearby allies a chunk of health after a kill. In isolation that doesn't bother me. I'd be more worried about a bastion titan starting a fight with os then getting a kill to have bastion shield, potentially more os, and kill clip. Not to mention oem, pks, etc on top of that. If we were in subclass 2.0 land where it was a perk that gave you os after a kill, then I wouldn't be worried. It would be a strong perk that effects ttk on a timer like kill clip. Just wait it out and we're back on even playing field. They got their kill and use the win more perk. The trade if would be a neutral perk in that slot instead. Thing is bastion and healing nades aren't going away. On paper there are no trade offs. It becomes a non decision to run void titan with bastion, the new fragment, and a damage perk. Throw on oem to put salt on the wound. Try and wait out a mobile juggernaut and hope they don't have 100 resil and special amo. Otherwise you'd hope they're a worse player or you hope to catch them willing to engage without anyone of those things up.
      Idk tho since we don't know how it'll all play out. Bungie has a horrible track record with balancing these types of things and we don't know the full list of patch notes. I hope it isn't that bad and I'm not losing sleep over it, but again can't blame anyone for being concerned after oem, stag, wormhusk, Lorentz, arbalest, etc

    Buffing armor-piercing rounds to do chip damage to health on top of the shield damage would help. Combining that with under-over would be a great counter.

    I actually found this perk fairly useful on the Out of Bounds. Players get real cocky at that range with over shields and adding under over to an already very good SMG makes you burn through that shield like it's not even there. I've gotten a lot of kills because they panic as they realize that they are dying a lot quicker than they expected

      Same here, I actually really like the perk. Most of the weapons that have it have a good chance of closing duel early. So it's exactly however much you need to win vs a normal guardian; and especially punishing to anyone spamming regenerative or protective abilities.

    Heres the thing: people complain about void overshields because its unique to the titan class, or it was until gyrfalcons was a thing. But because it was unique they wanted it nerfed to the ground or gone. All this video proves in the first minute or so of it, is that overshields isn't as big of an issue as people wanna make it out to be. And yes i mean titan overshields. Warlocks you cant bitch your rift heals and gives an overshield and you dont even need to build into it

    Overshields should not exist in pvp anyway. But if we accept the fact that they are here to stay, the perk should do other things as well as negating the overshield advantage in order to be a keeper. Like stop someone from healing or removing a slow or whatever.

    i think it should just do overshield health + base dmg on hit.. like erasing the overshield, seems fair to be using a perk that only works in specific situations.. kinda like if i see 3 ikelos titans put on riskrunmer. this would be the gun perk to swap to if u see warlocks sitting in rifts and void titans who only fight with their overshield

    I run it with kill clip on exalted truth and I love it! What if it counters the strand armor? Hunter exotic applies it when they swing.

      Having rampage vs an ov is an easy choice to make lol. Maybe before the rampage nerf or back in 120 meta I'd think about it. Even a few meager points of hp make so much of a difference that people ran certain resil values before any buffs to stop certain weapons from hitting a ttk. Plus on top of bastion and healing nades it's a no brainier. More health on top of my more health while my abilities recharge for the next engagement? Or small damage bonus on a short timer that definitely won't impact ease of use or ttk when the opponent gets cure and restoration?
      I will say we don't know anything yet since the changes aren't live, so people having panic attacks are unwarranted lol. Then again Bungie did make wormhusk, oem, LoW, stasis, Omni, Lorentz, og bastion cool down, loreley, og restoration, classy restoration, etc etc etc. Can't blame people too much for being worried when they always release blatantly broken or op stuff and act surprised when it needs to be touched asap.

      @@brivs512 the difference is smaller than you think it is. Both of them are constructed to change the time to kill. You get overshields to extend your own and damage to shorten theirs in the end it levels out. It's really not that serious.

    i think underover should give enough damage to maintain your optimal ttk. IE hand cannon will always 3 tap with under over. i feel if this happened itd be worth to keep a spare one to swap too if you see the other team using over shields
