Steve Perry is simply great and Journey wouldn't be the same without him. His voice and performance together with Neal's guitar was just perfect. Steve Smith on drums was one of the best drummers for me, he had his own style. Jonathan was also a great musician and Ross on bass was great too. Check out more of this really great concert. Also the “Raised on Radio” “Walks Like A Lady (Live in Osaka 1980” and so much more
“Stone In Love” started life at a party in Journey guitarist Neal Schon's house in San Rafael, California. He came up with the song's signature riff and structure, titling it “Stoned In Love.” It changed after singer Steve Perry and keyboardist-guitarist Jonathan Cain finished the lyrics. Although never a commercial single, “Stone In Love” was a popular rock radio track for the San Francisco Bay Area band, as well as a staple of its live sets. The Escape album marked the debut of former Babys member Cain, who joined Journey in April 1981 to replace founding member Gregg Rolie. Perry said his impact on the band was immediate - “Jonathan Cain is such a great lyricist, he helped me go to another place as a writer.” Escape was Journey's most successful studio album, hitting Number One on the Billboard 200, staying on the charts for 146 weeks, and selling more than five million copies. During the Escape tour, Journey left its own headlining dates to open the first show of the Rolling Stones' 1981 North American tour on September 25 in Philadelphia.
Pretty sure they opened for The Stones in Buffalo at Rich Stadium as well. I heard they were booed by the Stones fans. They said they didn't care -- they just thought it was cool opening for them. Besides...they went back to their own tour headlining across the country. T
A lot of times, Steve's voice overshadows the band, and most casuals don't realize that the guys in the band were phenomenal musicians. Neil would get more love if his politics aligned with the majority of the music industry's. Steve Smith has been called a "living legend" and is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. Some say the greatest. Of course, RUSH fans would say Neil Pert. I'm sure Zeppelin fans would have their own opinion as well. I think I've mentioned this before but when you start playing rhythm guitar for Santana at 16, you're probably pretty good. Former Journey keyboardist Greg Rolle had the best line of all time in regard to Neil. "I'd go by and pick him up at school and we'd go jam. Neil was going to school, but he wasn't really IN school, if you know what I mean"? 😅 And Steve Smith has an eclectic history in music himself, having played in bands that resemble jazz ensembles more than anything else. The guy is amazing. Truly an incredible talent, regardless of genre.
Stone In Love is about a popular girl from Steve Perry's area. He had a crush on her, however, according to Perry, she wouldn't give him a time or day. Perry said that he saw her at a popular lake one summer, and she was wearing a pair of shorts that you could see 'EVERYTHING!!'. That's where you get ....... 'In the heat with a blue jean girl' I just love this song. And Ross' bass playing is amazing!!
Check out the documentary, "Frontiers...and Beyond". NFL Films documented the band's cross-country US Tour in 1983 in support of their album, "Frontiers". It not only features the band, but the co-stars of the movie are the roadies.
Not a big fan of this band but this was my all time favorite by them. Neal Schon actually remembered he was a rock guitarist on this one. Greg Rolle decided to retire from music and left this group but he and Neal met in another little group you might have heard of, Santana
I watched this concert on MTV back in 1981/82. I do not remember Jonathan Cain playing rhythm guitar or Steve switching to synth. Neil Schon got his start on Santana III and Caravanaserai before leaving with Greg Rolie to form Journey. (Actually Azteca came in between, including a couple of other former Santana members). They only sang back-up on the words "Stone in love."
Hey Lee, if you want to hear Neal go absolutely crazy on the guitar listen to their pre-Steve Perry tune "Look into the Future" from the album of the same name.
Really love journey and more specifically. I really love Steve Perry. His voice is immaculate and beyond that, my gut. Tells me that he is a good man. A family man all the things. Most of us here in America hope to be 1 day when we are finally a grown man which for me was about. 55 years ago. More importantly, to me, is that journey is one of a dozen and a 1/2 or so groups, not from the late 60s early 70s that I actually like and appreciate their musicality. Their live performances are all. It takes to show you what you can do without the aid of computerized technology. What to see is what you get and what you see is what is.
@@scottyhotty1003 Thank you, I appreciate that. It kind of makes me feel pretty darn. Good that someone else sees it as I happen to see it. Let's face it, we here at noseum. About how great the late 60s and 70s were as if there was no other time frame that had great groups, also, which could well have been in those 60s and 70s are big Just as successful.
This was literally their first concert on that tour. Brand new song. Steve messed the lyrics up on the first verse and Neal took a little different direction in his ending solo, but unless you knew the song, you'd never notice. The "Live in Houston" version is better. Give it a watch. Check out "Be Good To Yourself", "Line of Fire" and "Edge of the Blade" - more rockers.
Without a doubt, "Mother/Father," from Live in Houston. Hands down something you should see.
Have to see mother, father live in houston . Every member shines musically and vocally. Best live performance.
Steve Perry, the Voice. He’s one of the greatest vocalists of all time.

Great song! One of my favorite Journey songs!
Talent overload on that stage! Check out "The Girl Can't Help It" live 1986

I'm glad you mentioned Ross Vallory, the bassist. Most peoples' reactions to song rarely mention the bass. Which plays a key part in songs.
Awesome Scotty, Neal brings the heat all the time.
Absolutely ❤
Neal is a great guitarist . Played with Santana !
Wow
Best vocal of Steve Perry is Mother Father live in Houston
No auto tune. No in ear monitors.
Steve Perry started out as a drummer.
Wow seriously?
I agree, this is definitely one of my favorites. Or don’t stop believe in. Lol.
neals tone is like an ice pick, just penetrates the brain, also clean as anybody i've heard.
Steve Perry's vocals make Journey instantly recognizable ...favorite song ... 'Separate Ways' ... please
Me too❤
Neil was in Santana before he became one of the founders of Journey.
That's incredible
Check out the studio version!!

“Lay it down” is a cool overlooked and underrated journey track. You should go check it out.

One of his members please have him react to Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leopard. Don't tell him why though.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better male singer in the rock era. That is why Steve Perry was known as "the Voice".
Absolutely ❤
Great late 70’s/80’s band. Check out “Where were you” it’s a rocker
Wilderman Expressway
Should have done Houston 1981 much better quality
Love girl can’t help it. What a great song and video.
It is hard to believe he had the flu and was singing that good
If you wanna hear a funky bassist John Taylor of Duran Duran is amazing.
IMO Steve Perry IS Journey ❤
Pffft!!! Phish & the "Hottest" Journey song ever... Lol. JFG!!!! Neil Schon is an Assassin on the Axe 🪓🎸
You must, and I mean, must! Review, Girl can’t help it, live by Journey!
Escape....from ConCave Earth
Could you please react to “Could We Be Somethin’ Again”, “We’re Still Here” from Steve’s solo album Traces? Thanks 😊

The 2022 remaster from the Houston concert has better audio.
Houston live is a better version he fluffed the lyrics in the first verse here. Still impressive
