  • The City of London Cemetery and Crematorium is a remarkable burial ground which truly merits inclusion in any inventory of great Victorian garden cemeteries. Opened in 1856, today it has some 150,000 graves and 70,000 gravestones and monuments and is the final resting places for almost one million departed.
Come with me as we explore the impressive architecture and artwork to be seen in this municipal cemetery, one of the largest in Europe. We will also discover some of the noteworthy people who now lie in this wonderfully listed landscaped burial ground.

The memorial at 6.45 minutes is on the place where the remains of one of my husbands family members and her young baby were moved to. Charlotte and her daughter Charlotte died in the mid 1850's

In London's heart, a haven lies,
Where souls in silence softly sigh,
Amongst the trees and blooms so fair,
The City of London's garden rare.
Inscribed in stone, a thousand tales,
    Whispered by the gentle gales,
Of lives once lived, now laid to rest,
    In this sanctuary, divinely blessed.
Each monument a work of art,
    Crafted by hands, aching heart,
    Echoes of Victorian grace,
    In this tranquil, hallowed space.
    Majestic arches, towering spires,
    Evoke the souls' eternal desires,
A symphony of stone and bloom,
    In this city's quiet tomb.
    Here, history's whispers softly speak,
Of heroes bold and lovers meek,
    Of artists, poets, thinkers wise,
    Beneath London's ever-watchful skies.
Amidst the shadows, paths wind deep,
Through verdant aisles, where memories sleep,
And as we wander, hearts entwine,
With the spirits of this sacred shrine.
The City of London's lovely charm,
A testament to lives once warm,
    In this Victorian garden fair,
May peace and solace always share.

If you purchase a grave and are buried, I think it is wrong for strangers to be buried in your grave after 70 years without the consent of the family. Also turning the stone around so the original owners are facing backwards is disrespectful.

Have been so many times as almost all of my family are laid to rest there. My mum and her surviving siblings, often go in the spring to look at the wonderful rhododendrons etc.. they take a small picnic and after paying their respects, sit on the benches to eat their lunch. Mum says it’s not morbid, she sees it as sitting with her family and past loved ones. There’s a book of remembrance and most are in it. So on birthdays they go as the page will be open on the name of a loved one, with a short poem. It’s not a cheap cemetery to choose for your final resting place but east London has always been our home.

Thank you for your lovely comments. Yes, visiting burial places is not morbid, though I usually shed a tear especially when I read inscriptions on the headstones of those who died very young. David
