- The Gettysburg Magnum Opus -- A Most Fearful Sacrifice is examined and described at the overview level. AMFS allows players to simulate all three days of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1st through 3rd, 1863. While still highly detailed, it promises to provide gameplay that is more approachable than older designs on the same topic.
Wow! Thank you so much for this terrific video. I really appreciate the kind comments. The entire team did such a wonderful job on this project. I hope you enjoy the gameplay as well!
You are most welcome, Hermann! You’ve given me quite a problem. If it turns out I like this better than Terrible Swift Sword, I’ll have a new all-time favorite game. After 50+ years playing these things, I don’t know if I’m ready for THAT radical a change! My compliments to the team, and if you ever need a play tester, you know you know where to look. - Paul
Thanks for the review and rest assured, if you have played a Blind Swords game solo then you can handle AMFS solo too.
@@cwhalen3141 Looking forward to it. Even Terrible Swift Sword solitaire is not so bad until about noon on July 2nd; then my head explodes! Might make it all the way through this one! - Paul
Hello Hermann. Just reaching out to you here as well as BGG; I looked up the Rocky Top convention and yes, I think we could have fun with that or just getting together. Let's trade info so we can talk more easily. You can send your contact info to theoakenknight@gmail.com and I will reply with my information. I have a subscription to Zoom so we can talk via a video conference, which could be really cool. Take care..., let's talk soon. -- Paul
Awesome, yours came in. Mine is on its way. I hope you can do some play through videos for us. Should be a cake walk for you since you’re familiar with the system. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this video, and, on a personal note, for not having a voice that puts me to sleep, as so many game reviewers do. Seriously! I've subscribed largely because of that. I'll be watching.
Very timely for me on this one too - my copy arrived last Friday! I have other Blind Swords games that I’ve puttered around with a bit but not fully played but I’ll probably just dive headfirst into this at some point as Gettysburg is my favorite historical battle. So, I now have this AND The U.S. Civil War waiting for me to play for the first time…good problem to have!
Hello DMH. Just wondering if you gave AMFS a try and what you thought of it. Mine occupied my game table for a good 3 months, so I enjoyed it. Now I have 2 games going on Vassal (1 opposed) and while my table is clear, I still get to play! -- Paul
Yet another superb video, your channel is quickly becoming one of my "go to" channels for hobby information! Right up there with The Players Aid!
Well thank you Robert. I appreciate the kind words. - Paul

Don't thank me, thank you! - Rob
Nice UB, TY. Stunning components. A home run for sure. I expect nothing less when HL & MW get together on a project. TY Flying Pigs.
Hello Ray. Yes, the components are stunning! I was serious about the player aids, though. The CRT, TEC, and other charts and tables are too crammed, and are printed in too small a font. Good news is that this is something the community can fix, and if nobody gets around to it I will. For now I’ll squint and/or get out my magnifier and enjoy the game. Take care…, and thanks for writing. - Paul
I agree. I have to switch to 2.5 strength reading glasses to read it with my eyes.
Very nice “unbox-view” of this game. Very informative. I think I am going to purchase this game. Looking forward to your play through videos.
Thank you David. If you are having trouble finding a copy, I contacted Hermann yesterday on the subject, and he tells me that the 2nd printing should be up on Kickstarter in early October. It is a 2nd printing, not a Second Edition, but it WILL have all the corrections plus the larger font players' aid cards as well.
Thanks for the great review. I can’t wait for your full review.
Yup, I think a follow-up is warranted. Right now I’m reading rules, punching counters, and getting ready to play. Need to get some play time in before I can review. Tough job, but somebody has to do it!! - Paul
@@theoakenknight1748 I’m looking forward to it. We all worked hard on this project for well over a year and we are hoping it is as well received as we think it should be. By the way, we are working on a streamlined version of the system called “The Shattered Union” series. Champion Hill should be the first of at least four games. It’s official name, so far, is “The Hill of Death.” It will be published by “Flying Pig” some time this year, I believe. It has a smaller footprint and less rules overhead. It’s in final testing right now and the art is done. So it’s on its way. Thanks again. -Fred
@@fredwmanzo8580 Hello Fred, if I understand, sounds like the Blind Swords system used in the Revolution games releases is being retired? I thought that was the small format system. Regardless, it is great news that the line will continue in some way, shape or form. Champion Hill is a great choice by the way; it’s an underrepresented battle. - Paul
@@theoakenknight1748 "Blind Swords" is not being retired. Herm designed the "Black Swan" system in order to model bigger battles. "Blind Sword" sort of tops out around the size of "Longstreet Attacks." After that there are just so many chits in the cup the game bogs down. If you notice in "Longstreet Attacks" we had to come up with the "Lull in the Battle" mechanism in order to prevent the game from going on forever. So, "Blind Swords" is for smaller regimental games, say no more than 15K to 20K on a side and "Black Swan" is for the really big battles, like Gettysburg. Of course, each system is in constant flux so after developing the "Black Swan" system for bigger game we turned around and developed a streamline version of it for smaller game, such as "The Hill of Death" (Champion Hill). We are funny that way.
Anyway, it's being called the "Shattered Union" system. So the "Blind Sword" system is being published by Revolution games and the "Black Swan/Shattered Union" systems are being published by Flying Pig.
PS: We really don't retire anything,
@@fredwmanzo8580 Hi Fred, I fully agree with “Longstreet Attacks” pushing Blind Swords to it’s limit, but it remains magnificent! I look forward to your next project. - Paul
Terrific overview, waiting for my copy to arrive.
Be sure you reserve copious table space - you will need it! - Paul
Truly outstanding review. You helped me decide not to buy the game when you pointed out that it uses neither regiments nor brigades, but instead uses artificial constructs. Many thanks for the monetary savings...
Hi John, Most Excellent! I like the game, obviously, but we all have our own preferences. Glad I could help. - Paul
@@theoakenknight1748 I very much agree. One man's food is another man's poison. Good gaming to ya!
@@theoakenknight1748 While you're here, tell me- have you ever played either the old Blue and Gray Quad or Blue and Gray 2 Quad?
wow sounds like your subscribers know more about military history than the game designer...I'm told a "Demi-Brigade" is a French term from the 18th century and has no place in Civil War games.
@@Phalanx11 Hi Vortyx. French or not, the scale works fine in this game. Think of it this way…, if you want a large-format big-battle game of the era, you would almost always be stacking multiple regiments per stack where an attack is being made. Or, one demibrigade unit representing 2 regiments will do the same thing. Works for me, anyway. Thanks for commenting! - Paul
Great video. Glad I came across your channel.
Thank you Chuck. Welcome aboard!! - Paul
a very beautiful game and also review
Why thank you E-4. It is a beautiful game, and thank you for the supporting comment about my review. Right now I'm finishing a pair of videos I had been working on before this came to me. (I dropped everything when AMFS arrived.) Once I get those out, which will give me time for additional playtesting on AMFS, I will come out with a deeper look at the game. Thanks for watching...., and sending me a note! -- Paul
Great video
The quality of AMFS blew me away when I cracked open that box. I'm going to need a new table solution eventually...
The largest hard mounted map is probably the current edition of World in flames.
Ahhh, I missed that one as I have never been a WiF guy. I tend to stick to 2-player games, especially if they gave a good solitaire gating, and purpose-designed solitaire games. That’s why I doubt you will ever see a block game on my channel. They are fun, but are not so good for solitaire. Thanks for the comment! - Paul
Ill take your word for it only because I respect your opinion
👍 Thank you, Sir !!
nice vid dude
Thanks Big Board! - Paul
I think there's a few other examples of large mounted maps
Hi Peter. Just out of curiosity, which games are you thinking of?
-- Paul
i received the game I have 3 player aids 1. player aid on one side terrain on other, 2.combat results table/combat event on back 3.scenario setup/orders of battle is there only one of each of these ? please respond
Yes, only one copy is provided. In such cases, I will make a copy and use my lamination machine, and clip the corners with a 5mm corner clipper.
Also, there are gamer created charts on board game geek for AMFS under the files section; they are supposedly easier to read and of course, you can print all you want. Matte photo paper works good for me. Hope this helps. - Paul
Paul, your video and comments are so good, I re-watched it. :)
Not to beat a dead horse, but it’s really negligent whomever let the tiny font (virtually unusable) PAC’s pass muster. AMFS very well could be one of those standout generational games, but in speaking with others they find the game basically unplayable with the as-published PAC’s. Which is a shame because in my limited experience so far, I am really enjoying the game and system.
Hello Steve. Yes I was really surprised when I saw the PAC’s, and honestly a little mad because everything else is so good! There are home-grown charts out on BGG already, but they are not perfect either. To play, I’ve just kinda manned-up and used the charts as supplied. Its’s possible, but not pleasant. I am and will let Hermann know about the issue; note that it is possible this was a publishers decision. It would be nice if flying Pig would release a set of pdfs with revised charts, though. If not, I remain confident that the community itself will address the issue via BGG. Keep the faith, and be of good cheer my friend. It’ll work out. - Paul
No. The step up in scale has made the system quite cumbersome. There are also minor irritants e.g. having to roll two command dice, (one after the other), just to find out nobody moves. I own and have enjoyed the Blind Swords games I have played, but I'm glad it was my friend's copy of AMFS.
Hi Roger! I enjoy Blind Swords very much too. Maybe the thing I find most interesting about AMFS is exactly what you mentioned. I think the game models the chaos that permeated the command and control of the CSA forces better than any other game I have seen, and very simply and cleanly. No written orders, transit times, acceptance rolls and all of that. But yet, those CSA divisions are agonizingly unpredictable. I love it! I hate it! All at the same time. ;^) Paul
Think this is most playable Gettysburg game. Whole thing can be finished in few days, other games have nice details but it can be overly long too with so many counters and so many turns. Last chance for victory for example
Yes I 100% agree! DemiBrigade scale makes so much sense for large ACW battles. It has been overlooked for so long, but AMFS is indeed the most playable large format Gettysburg game I have ever seen. - Paul
Unfortunately I cannot find this game anywhere to buy at any price...dang
I think there will be a second printing; I know they were asking for comments a couple months ago. Keep watching. - Paul
Hello WG. I checked with Hermann Luttmann on the plans for a reprint. He says that they expect to have a new Kickstarter up for a second printing, including all updates, in early October. Your second chance is coming!! - Paul
