  • Toronto has the largest Chinese population in North America, after New York.
For someone who lives in the suburbs just outside of Toronto, Chinatown is a whole different world. We don't go downtown very often as we live in Mississauga. This time, we took Steve's mom for her first ever visit! She got culture shock in her own country! We tried dim sum and bahn mi, and explored the local Chinese supermarket. Check out the vlog.

Hi Steve's mom, you're being so brave trying out foods unknown to you. I'm a Malaysian. In case Steve and Ivana have not told you, here in Malaysia there are tons of lovely European or Western style pastry shops, cafes and restaurants, especially in the cities. So there is always something to fall back on. Not every meal has to be Asian. You can try the local food at your own pace. Hope you'll have a great time in Malaysia.

Toronto looks sooo clean & modern. The street cars are so cool too. Looks like a lovely city. Anyway, when Steve's mom says, this is travel for me. I just laugh out loud 😅. I have been living in KL for 10 years on and off and I still haven't explore the city fully. Once in a while when I do go to places in KL I have never been before, it does feel like travel. So your mom's comment is so relatable to me. 🤭

She's a good sport and I can see that she's well loved by your audience. It's a huge world out here and the good news is that she'll soon embark on a journey of discovery with both of you as her personal guide.

The dim sum restaurant you were at used to be two floors (2nd and 3rd). One floor used to be more of a night club setting and I still recall the ceiling on the 2nd floor had individual square foot tiles and each tile had a 3D dragon and phoenix porcelain figure popping out which at the time was considered very luxurious!

Notice you thought the flour used in the Cha Siu Bau was rice flour. It is regular wheat flower. The bun remains white becasue it is steamed and doesn't get to a browning temperature. Its white jsut like the white bread without the crust. Like your video. She was pretty good using chopsticks.

Someone once told me the tale that, Asian hands are delicate because they only use chopsticks and spoon (for soupy dish) and hands, instead of fork and knives to cut.
Anyway, chicken feet is amazing (they are not easy to prepare btw). And they are also known as phoenix feet (for marketing reason), and the best way to have them elegantly is like what iwana did, you eat them in your mouth, and finally the bones u spill them out on to a spoon. Likewise, you can do the same with steamed porkribs at dimsum restaurant.

When I 1st visited Toronto, coming from New York City, I asked my Canadian friend born in Antigua who had lived in NY, where the "ghetto" was. He proudly said it's prohibited to segregate in Canada. Indeed, Canada saved a few run away US enslaved, though they worked for free once saved by Canadian families, but Canada once also had slavery & the Chinese & other groups such as the Native, Italians & the Irish Catholics were also discriminated against, or North American/Canadian cities wouldn't have chinatowns & other "ethnic" pockets, though groups with the same language/traditions tend to cling to each other.
