Yep, I go with the mentality of if in doubt you saw nothing, do not engage, do not react, move on by.

Used to live in the Appalachian Mountains of the US.
That line is exactly what you do if you get caught late on a hiking trail. Unless you can visibly see the person/thing attempting "to communicate" with you... You see nothing, you hear nothing you know nothing you move on til you get off the trail and get home.

I had an experience, w/the "other crowd" behind my apartment building one dark and misty morning. Im going up the back stairs and something made me turn. I saw a funny looking man, w/, outdated clothing, and very small, on top of a tree stump that was sprouting branches. I had the sense of, oh shit, move on fast and don't acknowledge ". So, thats what I did. Ive never seen him again

That's why you should always be respectful & aware of the of the Otherworld & all the figures in it.

Not to mention, even if there isn't a "Don't See Don't Tell" thing...
There's always that ONE person who would go "I wanna do that" or do it on a dare, or are just dumb and go to that spot, and try to do that thing and don't have the level of respect you have of "Okay, that Being over there is just walking past so I'm just gonna let them go without bothering them." and end up getting hurt or worse because they think it's fun to poke a hornet's nest

i tend to stick with some Appalachian rules when in the wild places, which while a continent away, may sound familiar.
if you heard your name or whistling, no you didn't.
if you saw something, no you didn't.
can look At the trees but don't be looking In them.
don't run if you hear something behind you. if it sounding far away its probably close and vice versa, but don't go looking. just go.
and for the love of socks, don't be going into weird niches like caves and weird trees with holes. even if there's nothing uncanny in there there could still be bears or bees.
i lived on a tree farm for a lot of years, abutting a state forest preserve. i saw and heard some uncanny things living there, but also did my level best to be like nothing nothing tra lala til i could get somewhere safe and Then fall apart
