One of the fascinations of Maugham's stories is that he was very widely travelled, at a time when the majority of people were not, so that you not only have the characters in which you're interested, but the backgrounds in which the stories are set, and all of this is so well written it seems effortless. Lovely.
So grateful to have found this site on RUclips. Somerset Maugham’s writing is exquisite. His descriptions of what is now a bygone era are transportative. Thank you so much
Ironically the people regaled by her stories most likely didn't believe a word of it and she only made a fool of herself while all along thinking herself clever. The long suffering husband probably suspected as much and found his isolation preferable to seeing people talking behind the back of his wife.
They most DEF believed her AND her stories (had they not, Maugham would have been the first to unmask her-as he was a very shrewd judge of character)…. There are numerous, historical examples of such characters having been taken into the bosom of highest British society during this era (the most famous of whom, Mollie Brown, was begged to remain in London)….. The story is VERY believable. And Maugham knew it.

@@Shineon83I agree. That is not how this story reads at all. Everyone was taken in by Mrs Barnaby.
Very engaging
Unfortunately, the AI 'reading' these stories cannot really cope with the vagaries of (British) English spelling!
9:35 she can really bring the goods
The piano pieces on all of these short stories by Somerset M. are wonderful. can you tell me, please where I can find the scores.
