Hansi Kürsch not just participates in the wiring of lyrics, but also makes basically ALL the voices you've heard here. It's just virtuousism at its finest. He sings in 5 vocal ranges with an absolutely unique powerful way that you never heard before, and probably won't hear again. So unique. I really recommend you to react to song in this same album (Precious Jerusalem for instance) and for an absolutely fascinating whole album experience I would highly recommend the whole "Nightfall in Middle Earth" concept album about The Sillmarilion, the whole story (of thousands of years) before the events of The Lord of The Rings. You won't regret it!
One of the best bits of music ever written for me is the point they describe bringing in the Trojan Horse. "they tear down the wall bring it in, they truly believe in the LIE" (The war is over, Romans are gone, lets CELEBRATE good times!!) Fucking fantastic music and imagery. The line " Mare of Stallion, there is far more inside" just gives me cosmic chills man. Brilliant brilliant stuff. thanks for the reaction
The drummer is Thommen Stauch, he quit the band after this album (2005) as he didn't agree with the direction the band was taking. Thommen was replaced by Frederik Ehmke. The song itself is about Kassandra of Troy and the Iliad, who has been given a two part curse by Apollo. She could see the future, but no one would ever believe in anything she said. So as she tried to warn everyone about the fall of Troy no one listened to her. The whole ordeal drove her into insanity. The song covers the different stages in the story from the invaders arriving at the shores to when they let in the Trojan Horse and doom the city.
And I do agree with Thomen : that's after this album that I began to don't like Blind Guardian anymore :( So bad, because they were one of my all time favorite bands.
A) the visions of Cassandra for seeing the Trojan War B) the vocals are by "the army of Hanson" (aka Hansi doing shit-tons of vocal layers with himself)
Glad you checked out Blind Guardian. Please Please check out their song Nightfall live version from either Wacken 2011 or Rockpalast 2016. Amazing song.
Loved the reaction! Blind Guardian songs are often hard to follow lyrically (it forces you to go back many times and discover new things) so it was sort of funny to see you try :) but still you got the gist of it and didn't miss the music on the way. Nice listening skills there! For the how many people does it take to write this - basically 2 (André Olbrich the instrumental music and Hansi Kürsch the vocal lines, harmonies and lyrics). I think it took around 8 months, if I recall correctly, for just this song... No one makes such songs, I think. I think they reached a peak here and didn't try to pass it, but to go in slightly different directions. Still they make really awesome songs to this day (new album coming up at the end of this year if I'm not mistaken). We don't have many reactions for their orchestral project, which I think gets as close to this as it gets. Try "In The Red Dwarf's Tower" by Blind Guardian's Twilight Orchestra (just orchestra + singing. No Metal there, but really cool storytelling. An original story this time). Cheers!
Actually it's the Trojan war story mostly from Virgil's perspective...great song, great reaction...continue with Blind Guardian and you will not regret it...
Guardian has really good songs. Might be my favorite homecountry band. Well at least english singing bands. German singing wise it is "Die Ärzte". Yeah, I know everyone and their granny likes Rammstein, but I don't.
This man picked up on the 'ferryman' reference, but missed cassandra and 'Iliad' being said. And somehow still got to Odyssey. Lmao, close. You eventually figured out Iliad on first listen. That is impressive. But listen to 'Under the Ice' by the same band., it is more about Odyssey.
Wow, you're actually super-close. It's the Iliad, not the Odyssey (Edit: I see you figured it out later). I love the wall of sound they achieve with this song.
glad that you liked it this is one of the songs that inspired most of my artworks, like this drawing (it is a speed paint) ruclips.net/video/e5LlxZ7WqZQ/видео.html the drawing is Mammon the demon of greed btw xDD also as someone mentioned below my next request will be symphony x and iced earth

I'm quite surprised how many people prefer Blind Guardian live. I think they are essentially a studio band, and especially from this album it's impossible to do justice to them live. They do what they can and I really appreciate it (and I heard ATTWS live was and was extremely grateful!), but you just can't compare. Some older songs they can improve sometimes live, I guess.. But their art in its true form is in the studio-albums.
This song is much more enjoyable on the studio version, while the live version is not bad(at all) it looses a lot of details that are necessary for this song. Especially the chorus and vocal layers, there're a TON of them, studio version is the way to go. I purchased the single version of it the SAME day that came out in 2001, there was a spanish version included on the single of Harvest of Sorrow(horryble one not gonna lie HAHA). To this day I still preffer the sound of the original version over this remastered one. Such a masterpice of a song, at the time I didn't enjoyed as much because it was way too much and epic and bombastic, always liked the more thrasy-speedy version of BG but there's no doubt that this song is totally bad ass, the epic-ness of this song is out of this WORLD. The album itself is simply incredible just for the vocals, I remember when me and my friends listened together(they didn't like it at all because is was not power metal anymore) and we called this album "the chorus album" because for some is way too many, but for me over the years it made me belive that is just an incredible work, the best vocal-chorus metal album that i've ever heard.
"Why can't all music be like this?"
My sentiments exactly.
As far as I know all vocal parts in this song are by Hansi Kürsch

Still the wind blows calm and silent carries news from a distant shore....sorrow and defeat.
No hope, the blind leads the blind
Carry on, though future's denied
Mare or stallion, there's far more inside

I heard this song probably some hundreds times and yet it still gives me chills. Masterpiece, both musically and lyrically.
Great reaction!
It took 3 months to record this song.
Thomen Stauch is the drummer for this. Epic production!

It's such a underrated banger

Scorpions, Accept, Helloween, Avantasia, Gamma ray, masterplan, running wild
List can go on
Germany has good metal bands 😀
It's more Iliad that Odyssey(edit: you realize late)

If you want to listen to the odyssey in epic musical form you should check out Symphony X The Odyssey
Wait, what Aurora suggested that? ;)
Iliad, not Odyssey. ;-)
