Thank you for your videos on Plato’s Republic. I finished reading books 1-10 earlier this month. Your videos and explanation of the dialogues affirm my interpretation of what I read.

Well well, that was quite a ride through Plato’s Republic! But what to make of it with so much to consider? The take away for now is the idea of the Just Soul which I take to mean appropriate balance among the constituents of the soul(the three tiered diagram) thus leading to Wisdom, Courage, Temperance and Justice. I also like the idea of reasoning on one’s own, not, or so I think, forced to just accept all doctrine dogmatically. And this it seems to me opens up exploration into all human endeavors, from the big five orthodox religions to esotericism to math science and literature etc. I shall have to read Mindy’s book to find out more, mean time enjoying this channel immensely.

Truly awesome journey. Thank you Mindy! The final line of The Republic reminds me of the final chapter of Sallutius' On the Gods and the World.

Finishing this episode represents a journey of several weeks reading the Republic, and it is the first time for me except for excerpts covered in school many years ago. This last book is filled with gems that clearly have influenced many other writers including the Apostle Paul. "....all things will in the end work together for the good to him in life and death [the just man]" was almost lifted into the Epistle to the Romans 8:28 - one can assume Paul was referencing this bit of Plato to connect more completely with his fledgling Church in Rome, itself comprised of converted citizens well versed in Plato at the time. I just wish there was more perspective in Christan teaching to give proper credit where credit is due. I think discovering the correlations between classical Greek philosophy and early Christian thinking only enriches the Christian faith and does nothing to detract from it.
    On to Parmenides.....

Congratulations, Deena! I'm glad you found Republic insightful. It is one of my favorites. I actually didn't know the parallels to Christianity. I wonder if you have ever read Pseudo-Dionysius? His writings are said to have connected Christianity to Platonic thought. I would like to do a video on him, if I can only find the time!
