I can always enjoy some jazz in my Touhou games. Brings a real good twist to the table. The only problem is... I already downloaded the latest update, 1CC'ed it multiple times, and I still can't play the Extra Stage. HOW DO YOU EVEN UNLOCK IT?!
I think you have to beat the game on Normal or higher without using any continues to unlock the Extra stage. The clears on Easy definitely don't count toward unlocking it. The game's also updated to version 1.12 now; while I don't think there were any issues with unlocking Extra in 1.11, it's probably a good idea to just update and transfer your save files over. That said, though, once you beat Normal there's an Extra-Easy mode if you're not up to the challenge of taking on the regular Extra stage.
I liked the one where she was fighting another person (the silhouette reminded me of Yato from RiverSoulSaver) and you were caught in the crossfire while trying to defeat both of them at the same time,it reminds me Of Kirby superstar Ultra where the sun and moon were fighting.
I LOVE how HSoB nicely offered us a delightful way to play Extra Mode, damn like we need an Easy Extra too for inexperienced people like me lol. Only Pros can play Extra tho :(
Depends on what you're trying to understand. I feel that this game is pretty friendly with its mechanisms and would be a good choice as a first game if you only care about gameplay. But if you're looking to understand the story as well, it's a safer bet to start with the canon games (Imperishable Night, Ten Desires, and Hidden Star in Four Seasons are the common recommendations here). THPatch does a good job of patching translated dialogue into all of the canon games, making it easier to get into the story. Hollow Song of Birds has a good story (in my opinion), but it assumes you know most of what has happened in the canon games. It also builds upon the fangame series's _own_ continuity, so if you go with this game anyway I'd advise you not think too much about references to anything that doesn't seem to have happened in the canon games.
It doesn't matter. During the encounter with Set you technically encounter Mumei as well. In the Extra stage Set is gone, so all the melodies are Mumei's.

I was thinking 'If stage 5 midboss was Nepthys, the stage 5 boss was Set, and stage 6 boss was Thoth, the extra boss should be RA. Complete with yet more Yugioh references' myself , but nope (They still got a Yugioh reference in there though). The closest we got to 'bringing the real Set' was the fact that he was still kinda possessing her. That nonspell before the survival has Set saying something like 'Hahaha! You want power don't you!' shortly before he takes over again for the survival spell.
