When Esteban tells the story of his accident, I like to imagine his story as an alternate take on the story of Antonia Banderas's character of El Mariachi in Desperado. A tragic incident robbed him of his musical gift, and he had to work his way back.
El did it by using his injured hand to wield a gun and kill bad guys,
Esteban waited until he could play again and made a guitar teaching package to sell on infomercials.

  • @vampiremaffia

Stephen 'Esteban' Paul like pseudo virtuoso Liberace found a way to exploit his average musicianship and managed to find his perfect audience that actually appreciates his artistry. Not all telesales Esteban guitars (according the reactions below) sounded crap and given that most of them were sold in a package that contained video tutorials, $100 doesn't sound like a terrible rip-off. I came across and watched "Esteban's Complete Guitar Course for Beginners" and it is actually pretty good even a tad bit ambitious. His Jack Nicholson 'lite' manner of presentation in these tutorial videos is surprisingly agreeable to watch. In one of the reactions below somebody posted a link to an article in the Phoenix New Times, the journalist who wrote that newspaper article tried to uncover the truth about 'Esteban', but Esteban believing so firmly in his own personal mythology kind of makes that a truth in itself, one that his audience and fans were willing to accept and embrace. Just my two cents vs the band wagon of easy ridicule...

The Billboard chart that most think of is the Hot 100. According to Bilboard, Esteban's album "Heart of Gold" peaked at 53. His other albums were at 54, 159, 179 and 192. So, his best was 53/100, which by my 3rd grade math says 53%. My 3rd grade math teacher would call that an "F" for failure. Not exactly "topping the charts" is it?

He is a joke, musically speaking; I have first hand experience with that (I subbed as a sideman in his band years ago). Anyone who has a desire to be a good guitarist should not listen to what he plays. He has a bad time feel and horrible tone, and so-so technique. I only say this because beginners who are not able to discern these things deserve to not be BAMBOOZLED.
Also, he did not study w/ Segovia. Mybe 1 masterclass, but def was not a student.
His marketing skills, however, are brilliant.

i bought the Esteban turquoise on black guitar package 2 1/2 years ago,i am totally 100 % satisfied with the guitar.i still play the guitar every day,i have other more expensive guitars now and the esteban guitar is just good as any of the others i have.after i learned how to adjust the truss rod the guitar was much much easier to play.

And in this episode of "Responding To 13 Year Old Questions", we have a Mr. Harry Beckwith. Harry has claimed that his "Esteban turquoise on black guitar package" is "just good as any of the other...(sic)" "more expensive guitars" that he owns. It's been 13 long years since then, and we've caught back up with Harry to find out a little bit more about the man behind the myth.
Out of curiosity Harry, exactly which "other more expensive guitars" are you comparing the Esteban models with? And furthermore, it's been 13 years. How has the Esteban guitar held up? Do you still stand by your words from 13 years ago? Do you still have the "other more expensive guitars"? If so, how have they held up? Do you still listen to Esteban? Did you in fact, EVER, listen to Esteban? How fast can you play Malaguena?

Esteban says that the guitar he's playing is the one u will get.....huuum his acoustic is plugged in, doesn't say that about the one u buy. in fact listen to the distortion he uses very lightly on house of the rising sun, another part u can see him grab something down by his legs. its a pedal board switching settings when the cameras on steve......I find he's trying to look like Stevie Ray Vaughan. he died in 1990 and Esteban started playing again in that year...idk my opinion I suppose
also, there's a longer infomercial on here that's almost 30 mins long.
I thank God everyday for esteban
    found it!! ha

the host not only sold the ronco knives, but the showtime rotisserie haha. RIP Ron popeil the founder of ronco he died I believe on July 27th at his home 1935-2021
esteban and steve both said his music is at the top of the charts all the time, read his wikipedia article, his albums never came close to the top in any category, besides what i pointed out above, lying to the audience, cds are known around the globe? best sellers the world over? he does all that without a record company being behind him? ha he needed this 99$ guitar to make some money.. hes a great player but when its 1999 or 2000 whenever this was. esteban and steve never thought that one day the internet will show everything...its true, u can get info anywhere and they werent thinking that when this was aired

Not to be too schmaltzy here, but if someone is introducing their kid to music, this was a great value. A guitar + Case + Instructional materials for $99? I mean... you can't really be mad if the guitar sucks.

    • @PaperBanjo64

You could easily find a better newer guitar these days...but I saw an old guy who had been playing probably 50 years and he made it sound pretty good, the action (that's the space between the strings and the fingerboard if you didn't know) was really high, and would be hard to play chords past the major chords positions, with a setup and quality strings it probably could be a decent guitar, but I'd seek out a decent cheap Epiphone or Washburn first...I've personally never encountered an Esteban, but based on the information I'd say avoid if you don't know how to set it up or have a good local music store you could take it to for a setup.
