  • There are many videos about the differences between film and digital photography.
    In this video I will focus on some rarely told (if ever) facts about the two different technologies and how these affect the photographic practice, both in the field, shooting and in printing the images.
    The images shown in the video are my creations, except where indicated. I thank Thomas Ruff and Daido Moriyama, for their pics that I took from the web for didactic purposes.

    Io ormai sto abbandonando la fotografia digitale, la utilizzo solo per la fotografia "spicciola".
    Per la fotografia "seria", pellicola forever. Non c'è paragone. (Solo b/n ovviamente)

      @@AndreaCalabresiSilverprint that’s true. Although, the only answer I can think of is speed journalism. Digital is king for that and took over through that world so fast.

    It seems like proper film and digital exposure are opposite sides of the same coin. With film you can gain shadow detail by exposing for the shadows because you have highlight latitude. With digital you expose for the highlights because you have shadow latitude.

    • @AndreaCalabresiSilverprint
      @AndreaCalabresiSilverprint  10 дней назад

      Almost... You need to expose for the highlights because you do not have enough latitude.

    • @AndreaCalabresiSilverprint
      @AndreaCalabresiSilverprint  10 дней назад +3

      More in depth: it may seem that in digital you have more shadow latitude, but that is a relative concept that depends on where the midtone is placed. In digital the midtone is placed halfway the total dynamic range, so from midtone down you have 5 or 6 stops, and the same toward the highlights. On negative film the shadows are closer to the midtone, and there is more toward the highlights (that's what you noticed), but the important point is that there is so much more!
      If in film we place the midtone at the same distance from the black that we have in digital (ie rate the film 2 stop less, more or less) we would still have a lot more toward the highlights. This depends on specifilm film used, development energy and kind, and could range from 10, to 15 (even some more, with special care) stops!!!
      So your impression is partly correct, but if you count in the total dynamic range of negative film, it allows much more than digital. It is no secret that in digital in a high contrast situations you need to combine more shots with different exposure and then combine them (with hdr or other techniques).

    Merciful god, knowledge of photography is not dead yet. Sadly, the pixel peeprs and mega pixel lovers will never listen. The whole debate of film V digital is rather futile, as film is a countinous analogue medium, and digital is well its just a procession of zeros and ones. And as you correctly pointed out, clever algorithms have to guess what is not recorded in between the pixel sites and make up a truly virtual image. Thank you, sir.

    I remember 2-3 years ago, in one of my first night film photography shooting attempts, I was quite shocked by seeing how much detail you can easily recover from the highlights... even with non-optimal film and non-optimal development. I was using an Ilford FP4 and I developed it a little bit less than reccomended and I was still able to see details in the spots very close to artificial lights. See the other tutorial by Andrea "How to shoot film at night" (ruclips.net/video/ao3fjOYPrXg/видео.html) to see how to use a proper suited film (and do a good development) for a wide-dynamic-range scenario and you'll be amazed by the outcomes that film can give you.
