    Hi Dan, good luck with your endeavors. I'm growing 20+ varieties of banana and I've found that planting them in the ground makes them grow so much faster than leaving them in pots.

    Hello Dan, I wanted to say that i will be joining you in trying to fruit Dwarf Cavendish Banana Plants in the uk, i will give you some ideas to try if you really want to fruit your banana plant Tip 1: feed them every 4 to 6 weeks with Sulfate of Potash which has an N.P.K of 0-0-49 mixed with Chempak's No.4 High Potash Feed which has an N.P.K of 15-15-30 the sulfate of potash will give extra potassium, this should accelerate the fruiting cycle so try to watch the video from The Millenial Gardener.

    It should be noted, if you are growing a banana (musa) plant, generally they need zone 10 or higher to survive outdoors unprotected and without mulch (some varieties are better at surviving low temps than others). This list should save you guys some time in your research if you want to try and grow some banana plants in temperate or cold climates.
    1) The hardiest types are: "Musa basjoo", "Musa yunnanensis", "Musa helen's hybrid", "Musa sikkimensis" and "Musa lasiocarpa". If you are in USDA zone 7a or lower, stick to "Musa basjoo" and "Musa lasiocarpa" unless you want some banana house plants over winter. You can grow the others in zone 7a, but they will need extreme measures to protect them each year, and you may not find it worth the effort. The two hardiest types listed are not considered "edible" but can produce fruit. They are edible and safe to eat, but won't taste nice and may have a sticky or overly tough texture to match. "Musa lasiocarpa" is known to flower much more easily than the other varieties, but is an extreme dwarf cultivar, so if that is what you are looking for, pick that type.
    2) When growing bananas (or any tropical), try to pick varieties that are hardy down to the zone below your one. This gives you a buffer so that a severe winter won't sneak up on you! If you are growing something in a pot, you should pick a plant that is rated for 2 zones lower than your zone, since the pot will cause the roots to take more cold damage during frosts. If you are growing in a pot in a grow tunnel, pick a plant that is between 2 and 1 zones below your zone. If you are growing in a greenhouse you can pretty much grow to your exact zone. In a heated greenhouse, you can grow anything, all year round.
    3) Bananas will only produce fruit if the "stem" is mature. Mature stems are only produced from mature corms (these are the tuber like bulbs at the base of the banana) which can take several seasons to mature. Once your plant has a few years on it, make sure you protect the stem really well from cold or it won't fruit. Bananas will very rarely have enough time to mature a stem and fruit before the end of a season, so by protecting the last years growth, you are basically turning your season from 5-6 months into an 18 month season, which will increase your chances of fruit significantly. The leaves don't need to survive, only the stem for this process to work.
    4) Caring for a banana for optimal growth: make sure you mulch your bananas with plenty of organic matter (i mean REALLY well, like 3-5 inches deep). In the wild, bananas are understory plants, with thick mulch layers on the ground and plenty of water supply from creeks and streams, if you recreate a similar micro-climate for your banana they will grow better. Fertilize your bananas frequently as they are some of the hungriest plants on the planet. A banana plant can grow from ground level to 10 feet in a single year if the conditions are right, so make sure your fertilize!!!

    • @homegardens7682
      @homegardens7682  2 года назад +2

      The manure I use is about 6-7 months old when I use it, Ideally, turn it once a month or so so it matures quicker. A metre squared is great so it heats up and cooks the weed/grass seeds.One needs to be careful when using improperly broken down manure. Pathogens etc.

    I purchased two different types of banana plants this summer. A dewarf red leaf one and the larger green leaf one both from pups. They are doing great here in the UK Manchester the winds have damaged leafs from time to time but once cut grown new ones. I did bring my dewarf one inside for a short time but the problems it brings with insects is not worth it really. I will probably build a clear tall cold frame for the dewarf one because it's a beautiful plant. Please come look at my latest video I've uploaded you will see my Banana plants thanks

    I can't get over that banana, the size of it and it is looking well. The video I linked for you some time ago was about growing Musa Bajoo outdoors near Köln which is pretty northerly in Germany. The grower there recommended sheltering the plants indoors until a few years old, at which point they were tough enough to survive outdoors all year round. They fruit, but they are known as the fibre banana - so I cannot comment on how nice they are.
    Dan can I ask, do you treat the peach and banana or even grapes with the Winter Wash? I had Red Spider Mite for the first time this year - I tried all manner of nematodes, but that just kept them at bay to come back with a vengeance and spread to other plants. Your plants always look so healthy, does Winter Wash take care of everything, or do you just not have problems with spider mite? it is one of those bugs that you don't see until it has a hold on plants. The last lot that came back I burnt off with a lighter.Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Your grape, Lakemont seedless is now available from Primrose (online) - I ordered one. Thanks Dan, but I fear I will traumatise bananas just as I do with citrus.

    • @homegardens7682
      @homegardens7682  2 года назад +1

      I have used Winter wash on some of my customers trees, I have never used it on any of my own though, I used one made by Vitax. My understanding is good ventilation/airflow can be effective at reducing red spider mites. My dixired often gets scale insects which I scrape off with a knife. You will love Lakemont Seedless!

      @@homegardens7682 Thanks Dan - I do leave the door open most of the time, but I admit it gets cluttered inside as I am over ambitious as to what will fit inside! In the house, no doubt, as I keep some plants on the windowsill. My Boskop was fantastic - only second summer and festooned with bunches (which I felt compelled to thin) - the fruit were sweet which surprised me. The best result was my Asian Pear - astounding fruit, stood up to everything the Valley could throw at it.
