Coronation street went down the pan from about 1997 onwards when the Battersbys came into it, from then on, one sensational story after another.

One problem is legacy media is dying, Boomers watch soaps and some gen X but beyond that people aren't watching conventional TV and Coronation street is not able to compete with Netflix or capture the interest of a young audience. Watched Brassic recently and it shits all over any soap and it's full of ex soap actors, Joseph Gilgun ( Who helped write it) Debbie Rush, Michelle Keegan, Bhavna Limbachia, Jude Riordan (Notice he goes absent on Corrie for months at a time), Greg Wood, John Weaver and Alex Carter. Even the Emmerdale police car is in Brassic. The soaps are not competitive and the inserting of woke nonsense doesn't help it's case it needs to be funnier and more edgy if it wants to get back some traction.

Here in New Zealand I have watched Coro since about 1961 when I was a young girl who had just started school. I still watch it but really that is because it is my one and only life long show I ever had, and because my late parents watched it. These days ----- too many characters, poor storylines including too much of the police, murders, sexual stuff, and some of the casting is terrible.
Bethany looks older than her mum! A 70+ year old person who has never shown any inclination before suddenly wants to go to university! A normative hetrosexual woman suddenly switches to being lesbian! A man who is supposed to be a school teacher is never at school and carries on like he is far too silly for a teacher! And there are soooo many pubs, restaurants, cafes and other food / drink outlets mainly empty except for Coro personalities!
On the whole the actors are OK. Some are very good. But fewer of them living and working around one small street, and more realistic day to day issues PLEASE! This "older audience" referred to on the video is people like me who are hanging by a thread with Coro these days.

Yes if they can act. In which case none of the Bailey family can. They got rid of great characters like Norris and less. and I know a lot of the old great actors that have passed on.
But the show still not what it used to be when families would gather around the sofa to sit together and watch it.
I’d say the show was slowly starting to slip apart around 2005-2010 it’s still have a little bit of sparkle right up till 2018. Then they just decided to go super woke with their storylines and characters.

The problem is soaps can't do storylines which would cause controversy. If Coronation Street was to do a realistic controversial storyline like. If Karla was having a relationship with a 15 year old girl instead of the police woman, if Nicky was sexting with a teenage boy or if a parent left their children at home and the house ought fire and the children died those would be similar happening in the news recently. The problem with that is Argos would end their sponsorship, SpecSavers would probably also stop sponsoring Emmerdale too, advertisers would pull their adverts and people will be protesting outside ITV's offices.

The problem with TV now is it's run by TV people who think they are business people. They don't think of any secondary incomes. If you look at what they have cut in recent decades they have closed the London Studios which they got additional income renting them to other production companies and channels, office space and editing facilities. They closed their children's production which made more money via merchandise and international sales than on ITV. The revival of Thunderbirds was sold to a lot of countries and there was a lot of merchandise. They ended any regional programmes that weren't local news which meant less advertising by local businesses.

Coronation Street has been dead for years. What once made it the top soap opera for decades has long since gone.
Corrie built its good will with the nation with simplistic relatable working class characters with the famous northern wit.
Unfortunately those characters are long gone and with the charm it carried. For a long time now Corrie has just become another ITV 'let's make another dark miserable drama' in a soap opera setting.
The characters lack any attachment to the viewer and are completely interchangeable and truthfully just not that good.
They rely far too heavy now on boring youngsters with their ten a penny attention seeking dramatics which is hardly the warmth viewer's felt by watching loveable and memorable characters like the Ogdens, the Duckworths, Bet Lynch, Mrs Walker, Elsie Tanner and the dynamic of the community back in its golden era.
Personally I think it should be put out to pasture. At least fellow ITV soap Emmerdale has managed to retain characters that viewers are interested in or entertained by.

  • @gavingerard2053

Corrie is in a much better place than Hollyoaks
I would say, as ITV is still highly profitable.
That being said, if ratings continue to decline,
it may become increasingly difficult to justify.
So as an interim measure it looks like cost cutting
with a cast cull to reflect lower viewing figures.
Hopefully the new exec producer can inject some
like in to Corrie - we need some strong new characters,
    a new family etc.

Bet leaving, the Brian Park era with the introduction of the Battersbys and the ridiculous cult of Nirab storyline, (even Barbara Knox said something along the lines of it was turning into a Whitehall farce around that time), the increased number of episodes, Bet’s ill fated return, the far fetched Richard Hillman storyline and other sensationalised ones since have all contributed to its decline I think. Most of the greats we grew up watching who made the show the success it became are no longer with us. Still some great characters and decent actors- the likes of Chris Gascoyne and Jane Danson are always good to watch, just let down by poor and improbable stories much of the time. Audrey’s son Stephen a serial killer, for crying out loud. I know the show has to evolve to stay successful but it’s gone like one of the trashy American soaps now, all bed hopping and murders, God knows what Tony Warren would think. It’s going the same way Brookside did before it was axed. I don’t think you’d rush home to watch it or record it if you were out nowadays. Charlie Lawson said in that interview the cast is too big now, and why have they expanded the set.
