Great and Extremely Informative and Highly Educational Technical Videos. Only wish I had found Your Channel while You Two were experiencing the PROBLEM as I have been saying to myself They need to Drop the Tank ! And now You did and to have Test the Vent as a source of the Problem before dropping the tank You should have simply been able to Loosen the Filler Cap while the pressure was Low with the Engine Idling thus Venting the Tank and the Pressure Should have returned to normal. And unlike gasoline cars (gasoline OBD 2 cars and trucks under 8600 GVWR had to be able to hold a small Vacuum in their Fuel Tanks as part of self diagnostic routine to check for evaporative emissions leaks) Many Diesel fuel caps had a vacuum relief vent built into them to help avoid problems like losing pressure due to having a small vacuum build in the tank causing the lift pump to cavitate. Well I hope Your problem was solved after You dropped the tank and relocated the vent. (I wouldn't recommend mounting it low as it could act like fuild trap or pull in water, especially being an off road capable vehicle You want all vents located as High as possible. But that man victory must feel sweet now that you defeated it and good time with Bill and the fam can impart a certain gratitude towards the adversity. I'm loving your journey. 😃
that plastic filter will work if you do not get it submerged, we always used the vent you initially had when we extended our 4 vent lines to a higher location. they will shut if getting into water that is too high, that filter won't.
Question Jason, could that media not get wet if you are driving in rain, and it is in negative pressure sucking all the road grime. I have relocated several diff. Lines and we also used the factory check. Just a thought as this guy has a good comment. Russ
Yay! My two favourite overlanding RUclips dudes! Glad you solved the issue. I remember back in my soldering days we would have fuel pressure problems on the old MLVWs if the fuel cap wasn't venting properly. Safe travels!
Improvise and conquer. Great job there. If we can offer a couple of ideas. When overlanding, mother earth tends to "stick around", especially on the undercarriage as you have found. We discovered this some time ago. We carry a very small but powerful pressure washer, the Ryobi 1600 PSI. We give the rig a few "rinses" from time to time to keep all that muck from building up. Your video is great insight and what to look for should the rest of us encounter a similar circumstance. Thank you. The other piece of essential equipment we carry is the "Mr Funnel AF15CB" portable fuel filter. It has saved us many times from poor quality fuel. Enjoy the wonders of your adventure. Safe Travels and Happy Trails.
Just a little tip, if that filter media is not silicon treated paper it can skin over when exposed to moisture and look like its clean but have same properties as a blocked filter, usually will get a grey to blackish look to it, same can be said for paper based air filter for motor causing black smoke or low power but seem to be clean
I like the idea of using those clear filters on other breathers like the diffs and transfer case. I had one of those valves plug up and start blowing seals when the transfer case started working hard.
Amazing your ability to diagnose and repair, but you did build beastie. Congrats on your fix. Me, I would have tried and then 18 more things would have broken while trying to fix the first thing. Thanks for sharing and giving the rest of us, with, all thumbs hope. Looking forward to your next video.
Glad it wasn't jelling! When the diesel becomes jelly like due too it got to cold(for those who didn't know mind ya) & it will clog up everything! But then again, you did say you where not up north so not sure why I thought that! Again, glad it was a somewhat easy fix(needed more then one person to complete) plus, if I ever get that problem, I'll be able to think of the same possible fix as well!
Aaaaahhhh...isn’t it a great feeling when you finally figure out the root cause to a real bugger of a problem like that and it totally makes sense that was REALLY the problem! Congrats
Relocation of fuel tank breather; diff/axle breather(Arb has a cool kit) trans and valve cover breathers are something often overlooked. Hot diff into a water crossing can overcome check valve on breather or suck in water thru seals. Glad you figured it out!👍🏽💪🏽
Thanks, I've already built remote breathers for the differentials. The fuel tank breather was 38" from the ground, higher than our air compressors and batteries, so I'll never be crossing anything that deep, I just never expected mud to collect up there and choke it...
Good you found and fixed. Had a similar symptims problem on my landrover years ago. Turned out to be a gauze filter inside the tank on the pickup pipe. Movement stirred up sediment which stuck to the filter and clogged it. As soon as the motor cut out, the vacuum dropped and the sediment fell away. Took ages to find. But didn't have to do a tank drop. There's a port in the floor which allows top access to the tank fittings.
I was about to cut a port in our floor,, it was getting very frustrating. Fortunately, we've been problem free ever since cleaning off that mud and relocating the vent.
Making me miss my 2002 4 door 550 w/7.3, built a dump bed for it, had the same fuel issue once, but with the dump bed just raise it up, super easy. Planning on building a similar rig, might put a trap door above the fuel tank just for this issue
Have you ever considered one of the Air Dog or FASS fuel pump / filter kits? These are very popular with the Diesel PU crowd. They are high quality filters and pumps. They also have a bottom sump pickup kit. I run one of the FASS on my Dodge. I want to install one on our Sprinter van build.
Hi there, thanks for the update as to your fuel gremlin. Also the camping trip was cool, looks so beautiful in the area and foliage colors.Really liked the shot of the bathing room. All the wood and the shaped tub. Was that galvanized, or just tin. Happy Vet day at ya! Russ
I'd throw a sump setup on that tank. Not sure if the 7.3 suffers from the draw straw cracking or falling off like the 6.0 does? Causes loss of pressure if the fuel gets down below the crack
Did you inspect the drawstraw while you had the tank open? Fords have known cracking issues with the drawstraws, causing the pump to suck air/vapor from the tank space once the fuel drops below the split. Glad you got the vent fixed, relocation is the right call. Those little plastic caps can’t handle mud, i’ve been fighting that on jeeps and squarebody chevy trucks for decades now.
I ruled this out as my problem when it happened regardless of fuel level. But, It looked fine, couldn't hear a hiss when I plugged the pickup and blew in compressed air.
It's a pity you didn't release the fuel filler cap at some point when you had fuel pressure issues. That would have given the game away. One for the memory bank all round. Glad you got it sorted.
@@Everlanders Not disappointed. Everlanders have Positivity. You learned about Canadian Mud from Dempster. Relocating the tank vent was the only option after you diagnosed every other possibility. You never gave up and you improved your Rig. Thanks for the lesson and I know Beasty is happy as a clam. Gerry
I also have a vent on the filler neck, just like factory, but it only vents if the cap is off. If the cap is on, it needs to pull air from this smaller vent.
Everlanders yeah I still not clear why that vent don’t go to filler neck and you should have a vented cap. But it’s working leave it if you have issues loosen the cap. Awesome video thanks 🇨🇦🛠🇨🇦🛠
Nice fix I will add this to the growing list to my rig. Have you considered a 5 gallon “pre” fill tank with a gear pump and dieselcraft centrifuge to fill the main tank? I have been shutdown by bad fuel from good sources a few times. I can only imagine the quality gets worse the further away from civilization you are.

I don't know what the tub was made of... I'm guessing tin. The roof was similarly colored and the joints were soldered, so that's my guess.

New music is dope
Correct! Can Confirm 👍
Was that vent the original position on the tank from the factory? If so, it’s a wonder it hasn’t happened to other Ford Truck users?
It is an aftermarket "Titan" brand tank... I can't remember how the original tank was vented... I scoured old photos to find out, but it wasn't clear.
It should been on the filler neck. So when you fill it it lets it vent. I think lol it’s been a while since I fixed on. 🛠🇨🇦🛠🇨🇦
I also have a vent on the filler neck, just like factory, but it only vents if the cap is off. If the cap is on, it needs to pull air from this smaller vent.

If that vent was the problem, then wouldn’t simply loosening your fuel cap have gotten you several miles, and had you tried that?
Indeed!
