  • A documentary supplement we created a few years back for the Criterion Collection's "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" DVD release, detailing the parallels between Byron Haskin's 1964 film and our contemporary understanding of Martian surface conditions as well as available mission technology (including some NASA plans we didn't know about at the time). This documentary, along with a breathtaking film transfer and lots more cool stuff, is available on the Criterion Collection's terrific Blu-ray release of "Robinson Crusoe on Mars". You can and definitely should buy it here: www.criterion.com/films/821-ro...

Robinson Crusoe on Mars is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi films precisely because it is one of those geeky movies that tries so hard to be accurate. As a result it was the first thing I ever bought from Criterion and this special added feature really added to the joy of watching this dvd. Glad to have the opportunity to say thank you for it.

The timing of this movie with America's space exploration was impeccable. One of my favorites.

I was "The" Space Travel expert when I was in school! I lived through all of the early History of our Space Program. (Hint: when I was born, even the first Sputnik was years away!)
I saw this movie on the Big Screen several times with groups of other kids from school and our Science Club.
    WE ALL LOVED IT!
And when our bubble of dreams was burst by the very first close up pictures sent back in the mid sixties, well I still can remember the trauma!

Robinson Crusoe On Mars is one of my favorite sci-fi cult classics in my collection. It was the first movie that inspired me as a kid and today its inspiring me to write my first science fiction novel.
I got the DVD about a year ago at Barnes and Noble and have gone through all of the extras including your documentary Destination Mars. I loved every bit of it. Thank you very much for making such a great analysis of a good classic.

I watched this film at the Capital Theatre when it came out new along with my brother, it’s campy but will always be a favorite.

Yeah, I always thought the screenplay had been tampered with, with some parts taken away and some others stuck on. It would be interesting to see the original story without all the changes, probably due to budget, monsters cost a lot to build. The first half of the movie is a real winner, I like it a lot, the second half.....well.

Excellent analysis of an inspiring film that I've watched on and off since I was a kid. Indeed it IS among the finest and most legitimate SCIENCE Fiction movies ever made. This introspective really brings out some of the most "prophetic" aspects of the movie. Thanks SO much for posting it on RUclips.

Thanks! Always great to hear from a fellow fan. I saw RCOM as a 12-year-old in our neighborhood theater when it first came out. It's not only one of my all-time favorites, but has influenced a lot of my own work, both fiction and documentary. It was a profound honor to be asked by Criterion to contribute this short feature (and the accompanying essay) to their magnificent DVD and subsequent Blu-ray edition. Let me know when your book is nearing publication. I look forward to reading it.

Robinson Crusoé foi um dos melhores filmes de ficção cientifica já realizados pelo cinema e muito melhor que os filmes atuais e também uns dos meus favoritos da minha infância e ate hoje continua sendo .

We agree about the last act, though this was one of my childhood favorites. (I guess that's evident from the featurette as well as the booklet essay that accompanied Criterion's DVD.) But I was a big fan of the monster-laden movies too, including most of Ib Melchoir's earlier stuff. Also interesting that the film he left this project to work on was something of a missfire compared to RCoM. In an alternate timeline it would have been fascinating to see what he would have done with this material.

Ib Melchor I think did the movie " The angry red planet" in 1959.

The only flaw with this video is that it is not two hours long. Goodbye Michael Lennick.

The pool wasn't on the surface! It was deep below the cave structure he lived in!

The real question is this... Could that really be possible that Mars had an underground pools and channels?

Watching this cinema ad I can understand why viewers became puzzled. This presentation promises a tough, hard core action movie and ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS is definetly not that.

Yes, Mars does have a very thin atmosphere. An atmospheric pressure of only 6 milibars But that doesn't explain one detail: how can such a thin atmosphere account for dust storms that last for months? We may not be subject to the full story from NASA, and National geographic.
