Mr. Sci-Fi visits two of the spacesuits used in The Martian and talks about that film, Robinsoe Crusoe on Mars and Ray Bradbury and The Martian Chronicles.
Both movies owes to the Daniel Deffoe`s 18 century novel, one of my all time favorite classic books, but they are quite different in their respective approach...ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS (1964) is the direct retelling of Deffoe`s novel for the Space Age(like that Ray Bradbury`s Sci-Fi take on Herman Mellvile`s MOBY DICK, "Leviathan 2099"), it has that pulp sci-fi adventure feel that I have always enjoyed from the classics of the "golden age" of Science-Fiction, and though it was technically and scientifically incorrect toward Mars, it aged very well as a cool SF/Survival odissey drama
The Martian was clear inspired by Robinson Curoso On Mars. I would have preferred a remake of that film to the Martian. No disrespect to it, but Curoso On Mars was such a great film.
+jaeeproductions Both "Space castaways" stories are great, but I doubt that one was a "copy" of the other, but inspired perhaps....If you want to look after a movie which perffectly pays hommage to Byron Haskin`s Sci-Fi classic watch ENEMY MINE(1985), starring Lou Gosset, Jr. and Dennis Quaide, which is equally awesome.
I think that "Enemy Mine" had some difference, due to the two main characters being enemies, still, even that was a guised rip-off of Robinson Curoso On Mars. BTW, speaking of rip-offs, Galactica 1980 ripped-off Enemy Mine with episode featuring Starbuck being stranded on a planet with a Cylon, and their eventual friendship.
Loved Robinson Crusoe on Mars. As a kid, no other movie transported me away as that film did.
Glad you pointed out the coincidence that they found water on Mars when the Martian was released.

Paul Mantee was great. I met him at a Worldcon and asked about the title of that movie. Everyone knew the title was schlock

+jaeeproductions I don;'t think all movies or books of a man stuck somewhere should be compared to Robinson Crusoe.

Both (that Galactica episode, and ENEMY MINE) pays hommage to HELL IN THE PACIFIC (1968)
