I think it's hard for people who weren't around at the time to appreciate how revolutionary this song was. Mixing EDM, hip hop, rock, breakbeats, even gospel... it just wasn't normal at the time. It's become the norm now, but these were totally separate scenes at the time. Now it's way more common, especially for pop music, to mix styles. This song just broke down all those barriers. (And it's an amazing song, obviously).
just the ending of the song with a chant from the gospal was absolutely unheard of. you'd expect it to go back to the chorus like every other song in existance
I gained a deeper appreciation when I listened to this acapella, the bpm that Andre 3000 and Big Boi are keeping up with is insane and you can here exactly what they are saying versus the mumble rappers of today. Sure the BPM slows down a bit for Big Boi's verses but this just a feat that I have not seen repeated. It's my favourite Outkast song of all time.
Outkast is what happens when artists are unafraid to define themselves rather than be defined by an industry with their own ideas of what rappers are supposed to be. Music defines entire generations. It defines culture. Rap is more than trapping and hustling, not to knock the hustle, but why limit it to one aspect of life? Let rap breathe and grow like it is with independent rappers resisting the system today. Sometimes you have to take a Chance. An observation, not criticism. Love live creativity.

My adoptive mom haaated rap and hip hop, but whenever she saw you guys come on tv and perform, no matter which song, she loved it. She loved your energy and how honest you guys sounded. She might not have caught every lyric, but she knew you guys put your heart into it. She could tell.

I didn't realize until just now, many years later, that Andre's lyrics are very deep. He's rapping about a soldier's experience in the war, then coming home as veteran. VERY deep and easily missed if you're just jamming and not really 'listening'. The line: 'don't pull the thang out unless you plan to bang' could be sexual, but I believe he's referring to a soldier using his weapon....VERY deep stuff right here. Much respect.

This beat is still one of the most unique I've ever heard. If they weren't throwing a verse over the top of it, would you know what genre this was even was? It's like Miami Bass played a lot of video games and met DnB at choir practice with a shredding guitar solo tossed in for good measure. Production-wise, Outkast made their own rules. I didn't realize until just now, many years later, that Andre's lyrics are very deep. He's rapping about a soldier's experience in the war, then coming home as veteran. VERY deep and easily missed if you're just jamming and not really 'listening'.
The line: 'don't pull the thang out unless you plan to bang' could be sexual, but I believe he's referring to a soldier using his weapon....VERY deep stuff right here. Much respect.
