Interesting points. MMA or "mixed martial arts" is awesome. As Musashi said, "become acquainted with every art". My Kyokushin and judo training has definitely helped me become a better fighter. Working as a bouncer in a bar, it has also helped me handle big, drunk hot heads. But as you said, most self-defense situations are not going to be some random person trying to fight you. The majority of the time, those situations can be handled by deescalating, not engaging, or avoiding the types of environments that are conducive to that behavior. Most true self-defense situations involve elements that aren't accounted for in combat sports.

You have spoken the truth, Soke. Thanks for uploading and for having the courage to say the truth! MMA is not meant for a life and death situation. Most people, today, do not know what combat is. They think that combat is when two muscled athletes face each other in a ring, to win a tournament.
That is not true warrior combat. It is entertainment. It's almost like WWE wrestling. It's merely a show for the crowd. True combat is when a stranger pulls out a knife and is about to kill you if he doesn't get your wallet or purse. He will have no mercy and if you do not react in a lethal manner, you might never see your family again. Period. There are no rules. Just split second decision making. That is what counts.
I hope that this video has changed a lot of people's minds to understand this truth: MMA is just entertainment. Your life is not really in danger, just your reputation and your hope to win the trophy. At the end of the match, you are still guaranteed to see your family. In combat, you could lose your life! Combat is kill or be killed.

you can train MMA for self defence, you need to be aware of how you train to achieve your goals. as the the way you train is different to prepping for a match
my coach trains pro fighters for international organisations, he also trains law enforcement and military guys.
he asks people l "you get attacked in the street but manage to get the guy in an armbar, then his friends rock up. what do you do?"
the techniques are perfectly functional, but the training and mindset has to be adjusted.

So true! I've said this time and time again. MMA/UFC is a *contest* between two athletes. There's nothing wrong with that, and I do in fact like it, but it is simply NOT life and death, plain and simple. It is a *contest*.

MMA js a great spot. It's not good for street fight, because most of their fight finish on the ground. It is extremely dangerous to go on the ground when you are fighting on the street. Your attention is focused on the person you are fighting, no on a friend or relative that is going to stack you with a basa ball bat or a knife. One does not need to be a genius to understand that.

In martial art perspective itself, MMA is a mix of a little bit of everything designed for sport combat, not specialized. I mean it is like "Jake of all trades, master of none". Yes they punch like boxing, kick like TKD, grapple and throw like Judo, but they never master any of it. Generalist vs Specialist, which is better? TKD might not be good at grappling Judo range, but they're master in kicking range, in other way Judoka are master at grappling range but not at kicking range. At least they're master in what they're trained for. If we trained a little bit of TKD, a little bit of Judo, we're can't master both, in the end we will want to focus on one over other. It is just natural, human are like that.

As a former Marine one of the biggest jokes is when people try to compare UFC fighters to Marines. We train for the most reality based situations possible (war) not one on one with a ref and a bunch of rules. That ISIS fighter doesn’t have rules and there’s no ref that’s gonna come in and stop the fight because the fight doesn’t stop until one of us is dead.

I can't think of anything better in a situation where someone squares off with you, provided they're unarmed. Not saying most self defense situations are gonna resemble that, but MMA shines in that type of scenario.

MMA can be really good self defense but for one on one fights. It doesn't teach weapons defense or multiple attacker's defense but what it really comes down to is how well the martial arts practitioner is regardless of what fighting art they train.

I agree. I think the biggest thing that martial artists to include instructors take for granted is they teach and learn techniques mostly dealing with an attack by an opponent using the same system they teach or learn. Once in a while you'll happen on a school that has its traditional techniques instruction then they'll have a separate section called 'self defense' where it depicts a more 'realistic' attack scenario but it wasn't a general way of doing things. I personally think any system that proposes to teach 'self defense' whether it's krav maga or whatever and they aren't including some kind of strikes to get a reaction or distraction in addition to a takedown or knock out strike is bs and garbage. I can't even count how many supposed krav maga vids and demos I've watched, especially designed for women even, showing a person basically trying to wiggle their way out of a hold or situation when the simplest thing that can be done is if there is an opening, freaking just hit the person square in the face (break their nose, gouge the eyes etc) or some other vulnerable area so you can actually make a way for an escape. Bunch of nonsense out there but when you're getting people to show up because of what you may promise who don't know any better at all, I guess you can just show them anything you want as the students won't know the difference as they're just paying for peace of mind rather than something that would be really effective.

No offense but you talk alot of sparring but i never saw a video of you actually doing it. And besides; a lot of Techiques you are showing wouldnt work in a real fight.

You are an absolute idiot and there is NO WAY you watched this video or keep up with my channel.
      .
In the video I said that ANY MARTIAL ART (which includes MMA, boxing, karate, etc) that only teaches punches, kicks, blocks, throws and grappling IS NOT A MARTIAL ART FOR SELF DEFENSE! * Watch the news! * Everyday people are shot and stabbed! Churches, Elementary Schools and other public places are attacked! Do you really think an armbar is going to stop a gun? THERE IS A DIFFERCE BETWEEN A "FIGHT" AND "SELF DEFENSE" and if you do not think so... YOU ARE A DUMB-ASS!
      .
Ninjutsu is, and will always be a weapons based martial art. Here we train in edged weapons and firearms... Here it is legal to conceal carry.
      .
EVERY ATTACKER WILL BE ARMED! If you are not training with and against weapons, you are NOT training in self defense. If you disagree with that, then you are an absolute fool.

Taking a punch or kick from someone who knows how to give and take punches and kicks counts a lot if you want to be a complete martial artist.MMA teaches you how to act when you are under pressure and builds self-confidence. As a karate practitioner and kickboxing practitioner ,I reached to the conclusion that MMA and other contact MA are perfect for self confidence .For the self defence part, yes ,TMA are better.

Because MMA takes tons of practice and skill and physical prowess. Asian martial arts same thing. Honestly basic training in American boxing and European wrestling are your most solid bet in a hand to hand combat. Against guns and knives practice dodge ball and learn to sprint really fast, really far.

  • @akumabakemono1447

100% true. It's like ground and pound for example: yes, you must understand G&P in order to get away from that situation if someone is ground and pounding you, but the tactic of you willinglly doing G&P on him/her is foolish as f**k. Maybe the other guy has a knife and stab you while you are in top of him, maybe he has friends who are comming behind you, or maybe you didn't got stabbed or kicked in the back of your head, and just beat him well, but Justice System decide you exeded the right of sef defense (cuz you just could had ran away when you take him to the ground) and you now go to jail needlessly.
And while doing MMA is great, this is just one of a hundred scenarios where playing the MMA game outside the octagon could f**k you.

It stands for mixed martial arts, meaning the people who participate in it are mixing different styles together. Im not yelling at you or trying to correct you lol I'm just posting this comment for the annoying MMA fans who would cry and threaten anyone that tells them that it's not a fucking style which it's not there's a reason why it's called "mixed martial arts" the sport mixes different styles together that's all it is but it's not a particular style like boxing, mauy thai, Jiu Jitsu, or karate, but it mixes all of those particular styles together. I love MMA it's a cool sport but I can't stand when it's labeled a style and I agree with this video. Keep it up 👍

MMA is not a martial art.
But, I would love to see a Ninjutsu practitioner try to stand against someone like Don Frye. As a matter of fact, in the early days of UFC one student of Robert Bussey was destroyed by a Muay Thai fighter. Muay Thai has need battlefield tested and is king of the ring. Even Robert Bussey has stated Ninjutsu techniques are too big and not practical.
Sparring, real sparring, is the only way to test what you know.
