- I found this VHS tape in my loft today. It's labelled IQ- Live in Germany, typed on a Phonogram generic sticker. From the content it's a festival taking place somewhere between the release of Nomzamo (1987) and Are You Sitting Comfortably (1989).

My favourite IQ line-up, playing songs from my favourite IQ album. Paul Menel was a unique front man with a great voice and sense of humour.
I literally cry every time that melodic outro to Gateway kicks in. One of the best prog epics of all time. Definitely in my top 5 sidelong epics.

Just wonderful, I was lucky to meet Paul Menel a few years ago at the Peel, great singer.
No way! That's a rarity... and after IQ, P.L. Menel practically disappeared from the music scene, right? That's a shame because he was really good.
Human nature its brilliant. One of my favs. And Paul was amazing too.

I was there! Don't remember it raining though. Only caught the tail end of this set as we had just spent 3 days In Amsterdam getting seriously wasted. Tull were pretty good.... Unlike the food.

Thank you, thank you, tnank you for sharing this piece of musical history. I've never come across this before, and I've seen many IQ videos. IQ live is an experience you never tire of, the musicianship and songs are timeless. Great to see and hear the early appearances of this band.
Fantastic rarity
Great asset to the true IQ Follower, very Gratefull, this was the period i found my interest in this Great Band, till now saw them many times in Holland Zoetermeer, never disappointing, especially the fact that its a period inwhich Paul did the vocals , makes it a collectors item, Thanks very Much Gerard.....
great to see this footage. met paul and the band a few yrs before at poole arts centre when they supported? (should of been headlining!) magnum. not my fav era of IQ but paul menel does a great job here. a good mixture of the more commercial tracks with their classic prog.

Great band. Michael holmes is a briliant guitarrist. Bassist Tim essau is again in iq.
The IQ website gives three possible dates, these were all supporting Jethro Tull. The Giessen show was circulating as an audio bootleg many years ago but I don't have a copy to compare to this show.

Me fascina The Wake y tales from the lust atic, pero tambien me gustan los discos con Menel.
No fue su primer vocalista. El vocalista principal fue Peter Nicholls, quien dejó la banda después de The Wake en 1985. Desde ahí el cantante fue Paul Menel hasta 1990 que volvió Nicholls. Fueron dos discos con Menel. Toda la historia de IQ fue muy buena y lo es ...

Hope to see PL's new band The Essentials at Darlington Forum on April 5th 2022. My band used to cover Common Ground, and Tim got the position Kev offered me in Prognosys. I saw him play with them at the Quakerhouse, Darlington. Nice lad; he's bald now - unlike me!
I met IQ with Nien in a pond is here ... then I met them with Peter Nichols on vocals .... well they are two incredible voices .... Paul with a scary extension ..... Peter with a fantastic interpretative and melodic ability .... I admit that it is difficult to assert which of the two is the best ..... there is no doubt that in the album Nine in a Pond is here the songs previously sung by Peter Nichols, with the voice of Paul Menel ....

Good old days
I'm not so familiar with this era of the band; I'm currently soaking it up and enjoying it. I came to IQ very late for some reason, late 90's. I had been listening to Marillion, Pallas and the classic 70's prog bands from around 1983, but shamefully skipped IQ! I've seen them live 3 times since 2001 and they are always magnificent. The Menel era is sounding closer to Gabriel's solo work than that of Genesis IMO.

Looks like the worst setting for enjoying this band. The best was yet to come!
The Menel era is not my favorite in IQ history. Nomzamo has a couple of great songs but Are you sitting...is boring, besides the magnificent Nostalgia and Falling apart... Although Peter’s live performance sometimes need a autotune, Pauls live singing is terrible. But very nice to see this period of IQ.
No ! How could you suggest something like that ! Autotune is for talentless pop stars who can’t sing.
